Ferdinand a doubt for Slovakia qualifier
rte.ie – May 24, 2003
England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson will assess the setback during a five-day training camp in La Manga, Spain starting this weekend. Eriksson knows he already has absentees in defence for the Slovakia tie at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium including Sol Campbell, Jonathan Woodgate, Wes Brown and Gary Neville. Ferdinand is also set to miss the June 3 Euro 2004 qualifier against Serbia-Montenegro with Eriksson likely to field Birmingham City’s Matthew Upson as cover. Former Arsenal defender Upson made his first appearance for his country against South Africa so there are question marks over his international experience. Meanwhile, South Africa defender Thabang Molefe has apologised for the challenge which resulted in David Beckham suffering a broken bone at the bottom of his thumb. Molefe, 23, is a Manchester United fan and insists he did not intentionally harm the England captain. I only realised after the match that his thumb was broken,” Molefe told The Sun. Beckham will be in plaster for six to eight weeks, but should be fit enough to join his United team-mates on a pre-season tour of the United States in July.

Telegraph.co.uk – May 22, 2003
Vogts has named his squad for the friendly at Tynecastle and the Euro 2004 qualifier against Germany at Hampden Park but will only welcome players such as Barry Ferguson and Kenny Miller back when they have completed their club seasons. Ferguson will be gearing up for the Tennent’s Scottish Cup final against Dundee and is already suffering from a pelvic problem. not how I work,” he said. “It was a fact he was injured in the last game of the season and we did everything by the rules. We got Wayne checked out, then we attended the England medical last Sunday.

Wales rocked by Fifa ruling
BBC News – May 24, 2003
Fifa, world football’s governing body, have told Wales that the away game on 20 August will be considered a friendly date. Consequently, manager Mark Hughes will only be able to call his squad together 48 hours before kick-off. If the game was a full international matchday, then clubs would be forced to release their players to the national squad four days beforehand. The Group Nine qualifier against Serbia was rescheduled for late August after Uefa decided the political and civil unrest in Belgrade was too great a security risk for the game to be played in April.

Beckham puts his faith in Ferguson
go.com – May 22, 2003
1 –>Updated: May 22, 2003Beckham puts his faith in FergusonDavid Beckham believes Sir Alex Ferguson will play a crucial role in ensuringhe is fresh to lead England’s bid for European Championship glory in Portugalnext summer. The Manchester United star has not always been enamoured with Ferguson when hehas left him out of crucial matches, including the recent Champions Leaguequarter-final second-leg clash with Real Madrid. But Beckham acknowledged that Ferguson is only protecting his players from thechance of footballing burn-out as he geared up for tonight’s friendlyinternational with South Africa in Durban. And that will certainly be a necessity in 2003-2004 when an 11-month seasonwill confront Beckham and the England players if they reach the Euro finals. The England captain is already relishing the prospect of his first elongatedbreak from action before United report back in early July as a result of hissuspension for the qualifier with Slovakia on June 11. Beckham said: ‘The manager is always good at resting you during the season… ‘Michael Owen is looking for England to tune up effectively for the Slovakiaclash as they look to build on their impressive 2-0 success over Turkey lastmonth. The Liverpool striker said: ‘Everyone is looking forward to the game. We haveonly got two matches before the Euro 2004 game with Slovakia so they are bothvery important. ‘If we can get three points against them it will certainly put us in a niceposition in the group and the aim has to be to finish top and qualifyautomatically for the finals. ‘Your views on this story?.

Hartson worry for Wales
BBC News – May 22, 2003
The Wales front man has slipped a disc in his back and will have an operation to rectify the problem next Monday. That could lead to a possible 10 weeks out for the Swansea-born striker, making him doubtful for that decisive triple-header at the beginning of next season. Wales play Serbia and Montenegro, Italy and then Finland in a
22-day spell which will decide whether or not they make the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal.

Carragher gets England call
Telegraph.co.uk – May 22, 2003
It is the first time that Carragher, England’s most capped player at Under-21 level, has been involved with the senior squad for 13 months. His last appearance for Sven-Goran Eriksson was as a substitute for the friendly international with Paraguay at Anfield in April last year before injury ruled him out of the World Cup. Carragher, who plays predominantly at right or left-back for Liverpool, is not replacing an injured player. England hope that Terry will be fit to play in the friendly against Serbia and Montenegro on June 3 and Euro 2004 qualifier with Slovakia eight days later.

And rather than creating another club versus country issue, he has also backeddown from any direct confrontation with Southampton. “It’s up to them and the club. I didn’t know they had a game so it’s also myfault because, when we sent them the [call-up] letter, we didn’t say that theyshould rest,” admitted Eriksson.
