“He has heard what we have got to say,” McKenzie toldBritish newspapers on Tuesday. “We have done all we can forHarry and we have made what we consider to be a very good offer. “If Harry decides that offer is not good enough and he doesnot want to play for Leeds then that is his option. Harry wantsto assess his various options and there is nothing more we cando until he has done that. Charlton signs Holland from IpswichLONDON (Reuters) — Ireland World Cup midfielder Matt Holland has joined Charlton Athletic from Ipswich Town for 750,000 pounds (US$1. 26 million), the London club said Monday. The fee could increase to 900,000 pounds in 50,000-pound instalments over the next three seasons if Charlton maintains its Premier League status, it said on its official Web site… “It was a big decision for me to make (to leave Ipswich) but I’m 29 now and want to be playing Premiership football,” Holland said. Holland, who helped Ireland reach the second round at last year’s World Cup, has been capped 33 times. He helped Ireland win its last two Euro 2004 Group 10 qualifiers this month which left it in second place two points behind leader Switzerland with two games to play. Charlton finished 12th in the Premier League last season. England to play Liechtenstein at Old Trafford LONDON (AP) — England will play its final Euro 2004 home qualifier against Liechtenstein at Old Trafford in Manchester, the Football Association said Monday. Manchester United’s 68,210-capacity stadium will host the match on Sept.

Barcelona go cool on Beckham
Telegraph.co.uk – Jun 17, 2003
The members did not vote [for me] because of a possible signing. They voted because of our long-term project for Barcelona’s future. “Sandro Rosell, Laporta’s representative, said: “If David Beckham did not come it would not mean a loss of credibility on our part. We never promised Beckham, only that we had reached an agreement with Manchester United subject to conditions. “Those conditions were that Laporta won the election and that Beckham was willing to sign for Barcelona – which he does not seem to be… It is difficult to believe Lopez’s claim last night that Real and United officials were in Sardinia simply to discuss marketing issues. The question Real fans are asking is: where would Beckham play? Real’s four-man midfield is usually Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane in wide positions, with two ‘holding’ players, Claude Makelele and Flavio Conceicao. England’s final home Euro 2004 qualifier against Liechtenstein will be played at Old Trafford. Manchester United’s 68,210-capacity stadium will host the match on Sept 10, ahead of the trip to face Turkey in October. Newcastle are continuing to pursue Brazilian Ronaldinho, who last week seemed on the cusp of joining Manchester United. They will offer £10 million-rated French winger Laurent Robert in a player-plus-cash deal to Paris St-Germain and double Ronaldinho’s wages to almost £40,000 a week. Charlton completed the signing of midfielder Matt Holland yesterday for an initial fee of £750,000.

FIFA head says Israel can host World Cup qualifiers
Times of India – Jun 16, 2003
“I am of the opinion that as long as security is
guaranteed, and obviously in this country it is guaranteed, then we shall allow
the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign to be played here. ”

Shalom
asked Blatter to help lift the ban on hosting matches, and said afterward he was
encouraged by the response. “I think that what has changed is that we
found not only goodwill, but a very clear sense that they intend, at the end of
this month at the meeting of the FIFA executive committee in France, to raise
this issue,” Shalom said. Blatter said it was too late to change the
Euro 2004 qualifying schedule, which is under UEFA jurisdiction. “The
matter of international matches in Israel is currently being addressed by the
European football confederation – UEFA and not by FIFA,” Blatter
said. “Previously we dealt with this matter in the qualifying
campaign of the World Cup 2002 when Austria refused to play here. ”

Anderson calls for more black coaches
BBC News – Jun 16, 2003
Back then racist abuse was the norm around English league grounds, but Anderson battled through the prejudice to win thirty caps for his country in a distinguished career with Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and Manchester United. England’s opponents a quarter of a century ago were Czechoslovakia and this week England played Slovakia again. But 25 years on, England played under the threat of expulsion from Euro 2004 if there was any more racist behaviour from the fans. “It’s started to rear its ugly head again” says Anderson. “I think Uefa did the right thing making Slovakia play behind closed doors recently because although the ordinary supporter might suffer, you have to stamp down on things like this. “And the fine was minimal really. If they are going to fine them they have to be severe… “We have to stamp it out as soon as possible. I saw that Thierry Henry was going to walk off the pitch because of racist abuse, and no-one wins in that situation. It’s not acceptable in 2003 for someone to get abuse for playing football” he said. You can hear all of Ashish Sharma’s interview with Viv Anderson on World Football on Saturday 14 June. Problematic enough you might think but unfortunately for Wright, when he landed awkwardly, he separated his right shoulder from the joint. Everton's club physiotherapist Mick Rathbone has said that a shoulder specialist has confirmed that Wright will not need surgery. That's the good news but the other side of the coin is that Wright is set to be out of action for up to two months, thereby missing not only pre-season training but also the start of 2003-2004. The long-term consequences could also mean that Everton may need to sign a new keeper and that Wright could struggle to get his place back. A few seasons back another member of the goalkeepers' union injured himself in 'Twilight Zone' circumstances, and again it was an England international. Wimbledon's Dave Beasant had to miss the start of a season because he had injured himself by dropping a jar of salad cream on his foot.

France, Brazil looking for 1998 World Cup final repeat

He has brought some young blood into a side many considered past its best after clinching three titles — World Cup, European championship and Confederations Cup — in a row from 1998 to 2001. Santini has made it clear he wants to win the tournament, which many club coaches have accused of being a waste of time and a risk to players at the end of a tiring season. Perfect chance With its place in Euro 2004 virtually guaranteed, the Confederations Cup gives Santini the perfect chance to test hissquad before it defends its European crown in Portugal. It will also be a chance for some of the fringe squad members to stake their claims in the absence of inspirational playmaker Zinedine Zidane and influential midfielder Claude Makelele — both excused to concentrate on Real Madrid’s battle for the Spanish title. France will also be without midfielders Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit and striker David Trezeguet, all injured. Real Madrid’s Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos will both be absent for Brazil, with Ronaldo’s number nine shirt going to Parma’s Adriano, while Sao Paulo’s Ricardinho gets the chance to shine in place of AC Milan’s Rivaldo. With Ronaldo and Rivaldo not playing, Brazil will look toParis St Germain playmaker Ronaldinho for inspiration… France will also be without midfielders Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit and striker David Trezeguet, all injured. France and Brazil are the obvious favorites, but they will not underestimate Turkey, which finished third at the 2002 World Cup, or the United States, surprising quarterfinalists. New Zealand will be looking to win its first match in the Confederations Cup after losing all its games in its previous appearance in 1999. Japan, now coached by former Brazilian star Zico, kicks off the tournament on Wednesday against New Zealand in Paris. But all eyes will be on France later that evening when it takes on the talented Colombians in Lyon.

The Confederations Cup offers a first shot at redemption. Even without Zinedine Zidane and midfield giant Patrick Vieira, France is a hot favorite to extend the title it won in Japan two years ago, and is tipped to meet Brazil in the June 29 final. Even at the end of a grueling Premier and Champions League season, Arsenal striker Thierry Henry is willing to put off a summer break for another two weeks. “When we show up, it is with the intention to win… The first-round exit in South Korea last year was a disaster for a team which had won the World Cup 1998, Euro 2000 and the 2001 Confederations Cup in quick succession. So far, they have made an excellent recovery. In Euro 2004 qualifying, Les Bleus have won all five of their games to cruise toward the finals in Portugal next year, and the succession of veterans appears to move smoothly. And this is why the Confederations Cup, lambasted by some, is an important test for French coach Jacques Santini. In nine games under Santini, France has lost only once – 2-0 to the Czech Republic – and proven prolific in front of goal with 28 strikes. It is the kind of momentum which should not be lost, Santini said. Especially, an early exit here would look bad on a resume of coach just emerging from his rookie year.

” Ted Beckham, David’s dad, revealed in the Sun that his son and Fergie hadn’t spoken in months. The British government was almost dragged into the affair. “Reshuffle questions related to the Man United midfielder are not a matter for the prime minister,” Tony Blair’s official spokesman said when asked about Beckham. The Man U star is going somewhere, but probably not Barcelona: The team won’t be playing in Europe next season, so Becks’ image won’t be boosted. Look for Real Madrid or AC Milan to swoop. EURO TRASH: Germany’s national team was getting almost as much attention — for all the wrong reasons. Last year’s World Cup finalist drew 1-1 at Scotland in Euro 2004 qualifying just over a week ago — put Scotland in the same class as Poland, Hungary and Austria — and needed two goals in the last two minutes to beat minnows Faroe Islands on Wednesday. Manager Rudi Voeller was singled out. “Rudi, that was ridiculous,” was the headline in Kicker magazine, while several newspapers called it the worst-ever display by a German squad. “We have been getting worse and worse in the last five years, and we got lucky in the World Cup,” added Germany’s World Cup-winning midfielder, Gunther Netzer. “I fear for the future of German football if this is what it is going to be like.
