FIFA head says Israel can host World Cup qualifiers
Times of India – Jun 16, 2003
Blatter, who
was in Israel for the IFA’s 75th anniversary celebrations on Sunday, also met
Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom before holding a joint press conference
with his IFA host. “I have never changed my perception of the
situation here,” Blatter said. “I am of the opinion that as long as security is
guaranteed, and obviously in this country it is guaranteed, then we shall allow
the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign to be played here. ”

Shalom
asked Blatter to help lift the ban on hosting matches, and said afterward he was
encouraged by the response. “I think that what has changed is that we
found not only goodwill, but a very clear sense that they intend, at the end of
this month at the meeting of the FIFA executive committee in France, to raise
this issue,” Shalom said. Blatter said it was too late to change the
Euro 2004 qualifying schedule, which is under UEFA jurisdiction. “The
matter of international matches in Israel is currently being addressed by the
European football confederation – UEFA and not by FIFA,” Blatter
said.

Soccer : A hollow trophy filled with hype
International Herald Tribune – Jun 18, 2003
It gives a chance to players who might never have got near the famous Brazil shirt — but in a shadow Brazil team. The reigning world champion has cashed in with monthly money-making matches, taking the long route to China, Korea, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria and so on. Soon, it embarks on South America's regional championship and the 16-match qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. Parreira has said that qualifying from South America is more arduous than winning the World Cup. Parreira's boss, Ricardo Teixeira, tells the coach not to worry, that he knows this is nothing like a full Brazil squad and he is not demanding results this month. Teixeira said something similar two years ago before instructing someone to sack coach Emerson Leao by mobile phone at Tokyo airport after Leao's understrength Brazil flopped at the Confederations Cup. The tournament created to feather the nest of lesser soccer countries is an insoluble problem for Brazil or France.

Japan Football Association president Saburo Kawabuchi said: ?For Japan, the Confederations Cup is a process of finding ideal tactics. We don?t set any quotas for Zico. ‘It was a positive tour because we had ten days’ work andcontact with the players, about whom I had a preconceived ideawhich I was able to amplify,’ he said. ‘The target between now and September is to consolidate theteam for the qualifiers. ‘Bielsa said Argentina showed flashes of good football butneed to perform more consistently. ‘We have to try and make the moments of good football lastlonger, it’s an aspect we have to correct,’ he said. Bielsa added that he had expected a better performance fromJapan, who are coached by former Brazil forward Zico, andsuggested the Koreans had been overcautious. ‘The match against Japan was good, although we expected morefrom them. We knew about South Korea from the World Cupalthough, even when they were losing, they did not change theircautious approach… ‘The match against Japan was good, although we expected morefrom them. FIFA Marketing was formed in April 2001 following the catastrophic collapse of the world governing body’s then television and marketing partner ISL. FIFA Marketing was charged with handling and attracting sponsors for all FIFA events, while the television rights once held by ISL became the responsibility of German company Kirch. Last year Kirch endured its own crisis and FIFA’s television rights, including the all important worldwide rights to the 2006 World Cup, are now in the control of Infront Sports and Media, a Swiss-based company created by former Kirch executives. Being the director of the FIFA Business Division, and not simply the CEO of FIFA Marketing, appears to imply that Valcke will be keeping a closer eye on Infront’s television sales and not simply FIFA’s sponsorship activities. Jon Wigley, a leading sports marketing expert, who has held senior positions with athletics’ governing body the IAAF and tennis’ ATP, told Soccernet that the appointment does not necessarily mark a significant departure and feels that Valcke has the perfect experience for the job. ‘His background makes absolute sense, because he comes with a strong track record in commercial TV where understanding the value of media rights, taking care of your commercial partners, and connecting with your end users, is a prerequisite. ‘He will instinctively understand the need to integrate commercial partners and media partners into the marketing mix with creativity and depth’… ‘Jerome will have to steer his way through that, and lead his Marketing Team to the highest levels of Corporate excellence. It’s a challenging balancing act’. Perhaps Valcke’s predecessor Patrick Magyar had the perfect background for the delivery of sports sponsorship having formerly been Head of Marketing & Rights Delivery for ISL, where he organised the commercial delivery of high-profile football events, including the World Cup and UEFA’s European Championships. But perhaps Valcke has the perfect background to head FIFA’s Business Division and the dual sponsorship and television remit the position undoubtedly has.

After England’s historic 15-13 victory over the All Blacks last weekend, Kyran Bracken keeps his place at scrum-half despite Matt Dawson’s return to fitness after a
thigh injury. Josh Lewsey, who required stitches in a head wound after being stamped on
in Wellington, will also start. Woodward admitted he had one eye on the World Cup and wanted to give Vickery and Woodman, who have both missed large chunks of the season, some significant game time.

It was a bald and irrelevant answer for the Bhutanese middle classes, whose average annual salary was barely £1,000 and whose outlook was slightly more metaphysical. The people of Bhutan, however, finally decided for themselves what would make them happy. France 1998 was driving the football-mad kingdom into a frenzy of goggle-eyed envy of those who were able to watch the World Cup on television. The small screen had always been prohibited in Bhutan, although the kingdom was crisscrossed by satellite signals that it was finding increasingly difficult to keep out. Even the king was rumoured to have a Star TV satellite package installed at his palace. Faced by recriminations, the government relented and Bhutan’s Olympic Committee was permitted to erect a giant screen in Changlimithang stadium – but only temporarily. A TV screen in the middle of Thimphu was a revolutionary sight.

McIlroy to be given two-year contract

“Obviously the final decision rests with the international committee but, from a personal point of view, Sammy has my support. “I think it would be sensible to have everything sorted out as soon as possible in order for Sammy to prepare for the World Cup qualifying campaign for the 2006 finals. “Brian Kerr, the Republic of Ireland manager, is to ask the FAI to arrange a Euro 2004 warm-up game for his squad in August. The Republic’s next scheduled game is not until Sept 7, when they meet Russia at Lansdowne Road in a fixture central to their hopes of qualifying for the European finals in Portugal next summer. Kerr regards it as a must-win game and, consequently, sees an August get-together in Dublin beforehand as a priority. Meanwhile Albania have been awarded a 3-0 default win over Ireland following last week’s European Under-21 championship qualifier… Ireland won the Group 10 game 2-1 in Dublin on June 6 but were penalised for fielding a suspended player in the match. The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body ruled Ireland should not have played captain Liam Miller because he was suspended for repeated cautions. UEFA said the Football Association of Ireland could lodge an appeal. If the result stands, Albania would move into third place in the group with seven points from six games. Ireland would drop to the bottom of the table, level with Georgia on two points. Switzerland lead with 16 points.

BBC SPORT | Tennis | Roddick eyes final test
BBC News – Jun 14, 2003
Roddick is reluctant to talk up his chances of success at the All England Club. But after his win over Agassi he did concede: “I’m getting there on grass and definitely playing better than last year. I’ve beaten three of the best grasscourt players in the world and that gives me a lot of confidence. ”

Yet if there is anyone at Queen’s who can cope with Roddick’s fearsome serve, it must be Grosjean, who has returned brilliantly throughout the week. The Frenchman was hampered by injury throughout the claycourt season but now looks to be back to his best… “His serve is awesome but I have returned really well here. ”

The duo have met twice before and are tied at one win each, with both matches having gone to three sets. Grosjean won on clay in the Davis Cup semi-final last year and Roddick gained revenge at Indian Wells earlier this season.
