Palios to shake up your football world
BBC News – Jul 1, 2003
Underwhelmed, aren’t you? You shouldn’t be. Palios will have a big impact on several massive issues to football fans over the next few years. The England team

One of Palios’ key tasks will be to make sure that England are not banned from Euro 2004. Uefa have warned that the national side will be expelled from the tournament if there is any more trouble from England fans in the remaining qualifiers.

Bore me like Beckham
BBC News – Jul 1, 2003
The news that his medical at Real is being filmed live and sold to the highest bidder should be seen as a sickening example of how football has lost its dignity in pursuit of money. But the news is not really all that surprising if you think of Beckham as a product, bought to sell replica shirts and open up new markets, as well as score goals and impress on the pitch. The whole saga started out as an exciting rumour that no one quite dared to believe, but could not resist talking about. Could the England captain, a Manchester United player since the age of 14, really jettison Old Trafford for the glamour of the Real Madrid All Stars?… But to think like that would be a total failure to grasp Beckham’s world. Eric Cantona recently admitted that his sudden decision to quit football in 1997 was because he did not like the way he had become a marketable product. Beckham, on the other hand, seems to relish the spotlight and his face undoubtedly sells newspapers, as well as countless other products the player endorses. His move to Real has taken the obsession with Beckham to a new level, and I will be a happy man when he finally signs his contract in Spain.

England needs protecting
Telegraph.co.uk – Jul 2, 2003
Brazil appropriating Arsenal’s Gilberto for a wholly commercial jaunt to China is in a separate category in the worsening club v country dispute. This, too, is an abuse of the international spirit and Arsenal are right to object. England-Australia, however, is Eriksson’s last chance to experiment before the two Euro 2004 qualifiers against Liechtenstein and Turkey. It’s a legitimate exercise in arresting a slide. The clubs have no right to lay down conditions about who should play or when. Point one: England have not played since Oct 16. That was 115 days ago.

Sour taste after France’s bittersweet win
Independent Online – Jun 30, 2003
We know that a family has been deeply hurt and that someone dear to us has gone,” said Santini. France captain Marcel Desailly called for his Cameroon counterpart Rigobert Song to stand next to him on the rostrum to share the victory, earned with a 97th-minute extra-time golden goal scored by Thierry Henry. “With all the dedication and the human aspect of what we’ve been through these last few days, it was not obvious to go all the way through this final. “But in an international game, you need a winner and a loser,” said Santini, whose France team retained the Cup they won two years ago in Japan. Despite the tragic circumstances, Santini was pleased France had lived up to the challenge without key players like Zinedine Zidane or Patrick Vieira for the tournament. He said the win had raised the country’s hopes ahead of Euro 2004 in Portugal where France will defend their European title. “We had to learn how to win without some key players and it will give young players more confidence, while older ones will start trusting the young ones for the crucial (qualifying) games to come in the autumn, but above all in Portugal,” he said… “But in an international game, you need a winner and a loser,” said Santini, whose France team retained the Cup they won two years ago in Japan. Hughes coll on Red Devil link
ic Newcastle.co.uk – Jul 1, 2003
But Hughes said yesterday: "It’s obviously very nice from my point of view to be linked with such a job, but I have had no contact with Manchester United and I don’t anticipate any. I’ve started a job with Wales and I want to see it through. "FA of Wales president Des Shanklin said: "I am confident Mark will be with us to the Euro 2004 finals and beyond. He would not walk away with the job only half done. "Hughes has three years left on his contract, taking him up to the 2006 World Cup in Germany. If he gets Wales to those finals, he will have picked up £3m in wages and bonuses.

Houllier keeping faith with Baros
go.com – Jul 2, 2003
‘Baros has been a scoring sensation for his country, who are certainties tocompete in next summer’s Euro’ 2004 finals in Portugal, and by then Houllierclearly believes the striker will have cemented himself into the Liverpool frontline, which would take him ahead of Emile Heskey and El-Hadji Diouf in theAnfield pecking order. Houllier will come back from holiday on Monday in time for Tuesday’s return totraining, intent on boosting his squad with new signings. And that does not worry the likes of England midfielder Danny Murphy, whoseplace would be under threat by the arrival of the likes of transfer target HarryKewell. Murphy told LFC Magazine: ‘New players is not something I worry about toomuch these days. ‘I actually look forward to new players coming because the objective is tomake the team and the squad stronger, so we can get success. Wales lose out in FIFA appeal
go.com – Jul 2, 2003
The August 20 meeting at the Red Star Stadium had been switched because of astate of emergency in Serbia which meant a trip to the country on the originaldate of April 2 would have been unsafe. The move to August 20 – officially a FIFA friendly date – meant Wales couldonly have their players 48 hours before kick-off and not the four days thatwould apply to a competitive international date. But today FIFA rejected Wales’ appeal, and Hughes will not be able to stopcaptain Gary Speed and striker Craig Bellamy playing for Newcastle at Leeds onthe Sunday before in a pay-per-view game. Football Association of Wales spokesman Ceri Stennett said: ‘You do wonder ifthis would have happened had England or a major power been in this position. ‘But we now just have to get on with things and make the most of it. Considering we had the same problem last season when we went to Azerbaijan andagain could only have our players 48 hours before the game on FIFA’s insistence,we are not that surprised by the decision. ‘But it is a blow, coming a day after the decision to put a Premiership gameon the Sunday, just 24 hours before we fly to Serbia and while the rest of thesquad will already have assembled and be preparing for the international.

Inside Soccer: Queiroz also headed to Real Madrid
nwsource.com – Jul 1, 2003
David Beckham was sold to Madrid about two weeks ago, and Carlos Queiroz — Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Old Trafford — was unveiled as the Spanish champions’ new coach on Wednesday. “Maybe it seems strange that one big club can take a star player and a trainer from another big club in this way. But I would argue it could only happen if there was respect and dignity between the clubs,” Queiroz said. Queiroz might be unknown to some, but he’s widely respected in the sport… John Terry has been unable the sort out a new contract. HUGHES STAYING PUT: Mark Hughes has been linked with the assistant coaching position at United, but says he’s staying with the Welsh national team. Wales, soccer minnows in Britain, leads its Euro 2004 qualifying group over the likes of Italy and Serbia-Montenegro. “It is extremely flattering to have your name linked with jobs, but I’ve started a job here and I want to see it through,” Hughes said. Cantona hints at United return
iAfrica.com – Jul 1, 2003
Wales boss Mark Hughes, tipped to take over from Carlos Queiroz, who joined Real Madrid last week, is flattered by the interest but insists his priority is to guide his country to the finals of the Euro 2004 Championships in Portugal. And now Cantona, arguably United’s best ever player and one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s inspired signings, has thrown his name in the hat by revealing that he would consider moving into management if the right club came in for him. The Frenchman told the Daily Mirror: “I have ideas on the game and I would like to go to a club where I can bring my vision. “My thoughts are revolutionary and if I feel the club is right I would go there. To do it I would need big players… And the biggest players are located at a club in Manchester. ”

Cantona also realises that he would be dealing with a different breed of footballers, whose antics know no limits. He added: “Today, you do not just play any more. You are in a business. The guys are sheep in a flock. “Today, everything is calculated, the players write messages before the game for their woman or their baby on their T-shirts, they expose that in front of the cameras. I did ridiculous things, but it was all in the moment of emotion.

Westerveld back in Dutch squad for Argentina friendly
abc.net.au – Jul 2, 2003
The former Liverpool keeper, who was sold after a series of howlers, was last selected for the national squad in May last year against the United States in Boston. Van der Sar, of English Premier League outfit Fulham, suffered a badly twisted ankle which has kept him out of recent games. Advocaat has Mark van Bommel and Pierre van Hooijdonk back after missing their last friendly in November against Germany through injury. But Rafael van der Vaart (leg muscle) is out because of a leg muscle injury. The match against Argentina will be the Netherlands’ last test before their Euro 2004 qualifier against the Czech Republic on March 29 in Rotterdam. “Last year we did well, but now we have to go for it… Advocaat has Mark van Bommel and Pierre van Hooijdonk back after missing their last friendly in November against Germany through injury. Although not every pedophile will molest a child, most of them look at child pornography, which obviously hurts the children forced to participate in it. Unfortunately, demand is high. To understand this problem better, we reached out to one of the consumers. We spoke to “Charlie,” who’s been arrested twice for possession of child pornography. He’s not looking for sympathy, or trying to play the victim. He told us .FanDuel fantasy football is the perfect complement to season long fantasy teams. I am sure we have all had seasons where, despite our best efforts and long preparation, our teams http://www.mycheapnfljerseys.com simply are not as good as we thought that they would be. There can be many different reasons for that. For example, if you drafted Adrian Peterson in the first few picks of the year and then snagged a quality wide receiver say Pierre Garcon you were probably thinking you were golden. Of course, hindsight is 20/20 and neither Peterson (because he is on the Commission Exempt List because he is accused of child abuse) nor Garcon (because he and his quarterbacks suck) are contributing much in the way in fantasy points. In all likelihood, your season is over and you are probably playing in your league version of the Bowl. One of my favorite leagues is the $75K Sun NFL Snap (Primetime). For a two dollar entry fee, the top fantasy point winner scores a very heathy $7,000 prize. Of course, there are prizes that range from the top prize all the way down to the 43,098th place (which scores $5, a $3 profit).
