Unlike education or business, football offers a fast-track route out of grinding poverty and entry into the elite club of Africa’s mega-rich. A host of stars led by Patrick Vieira, the Senegal-born captain of English premier league side Arsenal, have now teamed up with a project to create Africa’s first professional football academy. ‘If you go to the British embassy you’ll get a visa straight away’The founders say the academy will help the continent win its first World Cup within a decade. “There’s such enthusiasm for football in this country that we cannot be satisfied with occasional performances, like when Cameroon made England tremble in 1990 (in the quarterfinals) or Senegal during the 2002 World Cup,” said Senegalese businessman Saer Seck. “It represents an incredible hope, not just for the player, but for the family, his district or village,” he said.

But every year we have a better level of play and more teams keep coming,? the Japanese professor told Reuters. This year?s event drew 1,200 humans and 500 robots from 35 countries and plans are afoot for the next three tournaments. ?Hopefully in 2006 we?ll take it to Germany, to coincide with the real World Cup. We?d like to have a joint ceremony, some sort of kick off with human and robot players,? Asada said. Whoever wins the traditional World Cup in 2050 had better beware. After beating the best the human race has to offer, future Ronaldos and Rivaldos might find themselves up against a Robot XI ? at least if Asada?s wish comes true. ?Of course it?s very, very challenging, some might say impossible, but the important thing is to believe it and share the dream, otherwise we?ll never do it.

CAR reverses ban
BBC News – Jul 13, 2003
The CAR football federation’s decision to withdraw from all international competitions indefinitely has been reversed by the government. Sport minister Leon Salem said it was not the duty of the federation to take such decisions as they affect the whole country… The CAR federation president Thierry Kamach had suspended the country from all football activities on 9 July after losing to Burkina Faso 3-0 in Bangui. Kamach had come under severe criticism from fans and the press for the national team’s heavy defeat on the last day of Nations Cup qualifying games.

But Rio has also persisted in a second bid. Melbourne’s bid involved building three new above-ground “temporary” pools, two of which would have grandstands, in Albert Park, near the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. The new pools would be in addition to the $51 million upgrade to the centre for the Commonwealth Games, in 2006, which entails construction of a new 50-metre permanent outdoor pool, covered with a sail-type structure, with 3000 permanent seats and capacity for another 7000 temporary seats. The three new pools are scheduled to be built on the large car park area between the centre and the old South Melbourne football ground, and would be present for about eight weeks. Mr Madden said last week that the world championships required pools for water polo competition, a water polo warm-up pool and another for synchronised swimming. He said the pools are above-ground constructions which could be dismantled and relocated after the championships in places where they would be useful, “most likely to regional Victoria”.
