Les Murray Interview
abc.net.au – Jul 16, 2003
It still happens in some places – you know, what Johnny Warren calls the “sheilas, wogs and poofters mentality”, and that stigma still exists in very small corners now. But things have changed. There is a much larger awareness factor of the sport in this country, as we saw with the World Cup audiences last year, which would’ve been unthinkable 25 years ago. GEORGE NEGUS: Thanks, Les. Good to talk to you. LES MURRAY: Thanks, George. GEORGE NEGUS: The ultimate success, of course, for soccer tragics like Les and yours truly would be the Socceroos qualifying for the next World Cup.

Irish FA reward McIlroy | Northern Ireland | International | Football…
Telegraph.co.uk – Jul 16, 2003
His current deal expires at the end of the year but the new contract, to be confirmed by the IFA when they meet on July 28, will take him through to the end of the 2006 World Cup qualifying series. McIlroy took over from Lawrie McMenemy and Joe Jordan in 2000 and has been faced with formidable problems over player availability due to injury, suspension and international retirements. Northern Ireland have collected only two points from five European matches and are bottom of Group Six, having failed to score a goal.

Technology is helping the FA to reach Wembley goal
VNUNet.com – Jul 17, 2003
So changes to Wembley, the England football team’s spiritual home and the venue of their finest hour – the 1966 World Cup victory over Germany – were always likely to be controversial. Cries of ‘foul’ could be heard from England’s soccer-loving community when the Football Association announced its original plans to tear down Wembley’s twin towers. The truth, however, was that the original Wembley had passed its sell-by-date. The new 90,000-seat Wembley promises major improvements. The basic building cost will be £352m – but the total project cost will be £757m, including the full fit-out of the stadium.

“We downsized a bit after the men’s World Cup and very quickly we’re going to have to upsize, I guess. Soccer United Marketing and the ABC and ESPN networks entered into a five-year agreement in 2002 to broadcast MLS games. Included in the package were the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and 2003 Women’s World Cup. The Sports Business Journal reported that FIFA’s decision to move the 2003 Women’s World Cup from China to the U. prompted SUM to raise the prices it is asking for sponsorship packages by as much as 50 percent. Prices for bronze, silver and gold television ad packages will range from $500,000 to $2 million.

Spurs to highlight level of soccer – Jordaan
Independent Online – Jul 17, 2003
The English premier league club are due to play South African champions Orlando Pirates in Durban on Saturday July 26 before a visit to Cape Town, where they will face Kaizer Chiefs three days later. Spurs have been invited by South Africa’s World Cup bid campaign, who said they were seeking to highlight the level of the country’s club football through the tour. The world soccer’s governing body has already decided that tournament will occur in Africa for the first time to start a planned rotation of the event between the continents. Six African countries – Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa and Tunisia – were last month confirmed by Fifa as official bidders to host the 2010 finals.

Kenya’s hard work ahead
BBC News – Jul 16, 2003
But Kenya’s qualification for Tunisia was achieved against heavy odds after they had lost their big sponsors in the middle of the qualifying campaign. Kenya Breweries pulled the plug on their sponsorship deal following a protracted row with officials of the Kenya Football Federation. In the end, it was only a donation of US$13,340 from Anglo-French oil company, Total Kenya, that saved the situation, after players threatened to strike on the eve of their final group five match against Cape Verde. Kenya’s prospects in Tunisia will hinge on experienced players such as veteran skipper Musa Otieno, Robert Mambo and Walter Odede… Ochieng believes the team needs to be strengthened before the finals kick off in Tunisia in January. He said: “Apart from retaining the same outfit, we have to search for new talent to rebuild the side for Tunisia. “We expect much tougher opposition since the tournament will also act as a qualifier for the 2006 World Cup.

SOCCER : With full wallets, foreigners fancy English clubs
International Herald Tribune – Jul 16, 2003
How caring of them. Each had a turn of being the effective British watchdog of soccer. However, Banks was dropped as the Labor government's sports minister after his attempt to bring the 2006 World Cup to England ended in expensive ridicule, and Mellor's attempts to be the champion of the soccer fan has fizzled out. Neither called for checks and balances into the present Chelsea chairman, Ken Bates, or the role played behind the scenes by a shareholder who is wanted for questioning by the CIA. Possibly the politicians' true concern is xenophobic: stop the foreigners from acquiring clubs that have become woven into the British social fabric. Why are the foreigners coming, and why now? Abramovich, orphaned in early childhood and quick to move into oil, aluminum, air and other industries when communism fell to capitalism in Russia, has been questioned, but not jailed as other oligarchs have been. He explains, through an interpreter, that he has enough money — he wants success and he wants fun with Chelsea.

IDS urged Government to back London bid
Telegraph.co.uk – Jul 18, 2003
His comments caused uproar. January 2003 The Daily Telegraph revealed that an official opinion poll showed 75 per cent backed a bid and that the London Development Agency had bought land near the proposed Olympic site. Alec McGivan, who had led the failed bid for football’s 2006 World Cup, and is now director of sports at the DCMS, was asked to make an assessment of London’s chances. Prime Minister Tony Blair wanted to be sure London could win before backing a bid. McGivan produced a paper, which suggested London might come fourth behind Paris, New York and Madrid and this was leaked to Sunday papers. On Jan 14, Raine sent an e-mail to Arup indicating the range of costs for an Olympics: a 10 per cent chance the public subsidy would be under £1 billion, a 50 per cent chance under £1. 6 billion and a 90 per cent chance under £2.

For once, the Prof has made a positive contribution to this country. Instead of bombarding us with his propaganda, he should vacate his office and head for ZIFA House. The professor has proved to all and sundry that he is the man who can take the warriors to Germany for the 2006 World Cup finals. Come on Prof, we know you can do it. Go Professor go!
