The number of juniors playing rugby in Melbourne has doubled in recent years to 2500 and there are now 23 rugby union clubs competing at various levels in a structured rugby competition. At the elite level, there are nine premier league clubs, which have at least two senior teams and a junior team and make up about 80 per cent of the competition’s membership base. Mr Steiner said the World Cup would be an important showcase for the game. He expected more junior boys in Melbourne to sign up after they had seen the spectacle. “At the moment we are concentrating on getting the local clubs better equipped to handle the new players which flow through,” he said. “That means improving the standard of coaching and building up the infrastructure of the competition, both in Melbourne and regional Victoria. ” It is hoped a cluster of teams will develop around the regional centres of Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat… Earlier this year, the organisation committed all of its spare money to employing four new full-time development officers. What the VRU wants most of all is a Super 12 team. It seems the earliest opportunity of that happening is 2006, which would be a big start to a Commonwealth Games year in Melbourne. “We’ve prepared a very good business case for a Melbourne Super 12 team, we’re ready to mount the argument,” Mr Steiner said. The VRU itself has grown from an organisation that was barely a pimple on the bottom of the AFL to being a nagging pain in the backside. Only five years ago the union had a turnover of just $150,000 and employed two people. Now its turnover is $1.

The Senegal international, part of his country’s squad at both the African Nations Cup and the World Cup in 2002, is described as an intelligent footballer with a good range of passing. However, Faye was one of those to miss from the penalty spot as Senegal lost out of Cameroon in the African Nations Cup final. The defensive midfielder was overlooked for much of the World Cup campaign – considered by many to be bad luck for the side!Faye is a product of the Monaco youth academy and moved to Auxerre in 1998after a spell with Frejus, a club based on France’s Mediterranean coast. Portsmouth faced a Football Association investigation over Faye. The FA wrote to the club asking for their observations over why the midfielder played under an assumed name of ‘Henry’ in a pre-season friendly against Kilmarnock. Nothing came of it. He made his debut for Portsmouth in a 2-1 home win over Aston Villa and soon proved to be a bargain buy for Harry Redknapp… However, Faye was one of those to miss from the penalty spot as Senegal lost out of Cameroon in the African Nations Cup final. Again, No to a Foreign Coach

The decision is coming on the heels of spirited clamour by some stakeholders and followers of football in Nigeria. The call for a foreign technical adviser became stringent following the spate of poor performances of the senior national team under the tutelage of indigenous coaches, Christian Chukwu and Amusa Adisa. While we concede that there is need for further technical input into the national team, we hasten to caution that Nigeria need not hire a foreigner to achieve results. Nigeria won the soccer gold in Atlanta Olympics in 1996 with a foreign coach in charge… Many left in unpleasant circumstances when the NFA could not meet up with the fund requirement. The enormous amount that would have gone into the payment of an expatriate coach should be channelled into developing indigenous coaching capacity. The NFA must therefore assist the Super Eagles coaching crew to avail themselves of the latest trends in soccer before the Nations’ Cup next year and the 2006 World Cup qualifying rounds. The present coaching staff should also be strengthened with the best in the country to handle the different departments of the game. It is unfortunate that it is only when the nation is faced with a major competition that the issue of hiring a foreign coach is thrust to the front burner. The import is that our desire to win at all cost takes precedence over proper development of football at home. This should not be the case.

Mannetti looks to a brighter future
Namibian – Aug 5, 2003
I believe that the technical team wants to try out a few combinations and see how the younger guys will cope on the big stage. "Most of the younger players play in Namibia so this trip away from home will be good for them, they will grow in confidence," he said. Namibia intends to play more matches in Johannesburg in October as part of its preparation for their crucial World Cup qualifier against Rwanda in Kigali on October 11. The return leg is due in Windhoek on November 15. The Namibia Football Association (NFA) has not yet confirmed the dates of the friendly matches against at least four South African sides. Mannetti said that prior to the African Nations Cup in 1998, Namibia had gone through a "building phase" and reaped the rewards thereafter, although only for a short while. Now, he says, it is again time to re-build… Namibia intends to play more matches in Johannesburg in October as part of its preparation for their crucial World Cup qualifier against Rwanda in Kigali on October 11.
