?With artificial grass you can play 365 days a year and there is no lack of quality. ? FIFA has allowed regional World Cup qualifiers to be played on synthetic pitches but, until now, not the finals of any of its competitions. The world governing body said it had no plans to use a synthetic pitch in World Cup finals ? the showcase event is next held in Germany in 2006 ? but the all-weather surface could find its way into other tournaments. Pilot project: Some see artificial turf ? a blend of ground rubber, synthetic fibres and sand ? as a way of providing a decent pitch at increasingly closed-in stadiums such as AC Milan?s San Siro where growing grass becomes harder in the limited sunlight. For clubs on tight budgets in Europe?s lower divisions, it could open new revenue streams by allowing them to stage other events such as pop concerts on their pitches without fear of damage. European governing body UEFA is running a pilot project until 2005 allowing several clubs, including Torpedo Moscow and Austria Salzburg, to use artificial pitches for their home games. Based on the trial, UEFA will then decide whether to sanction the pitches for Europe-wide competition.

Rivals for 2012: Leipzig
BBC News – Aug 7, 2003
Security concerns this time round would be no different to those of its rivals, and the 2006 football World Cup would provide a valuable dry run for 2012. “Germany has a stable political system, a stable economy and is a big sports nation with great experience in organising major sports events,” International Olympic Committeee chief Jacques Rogge said last year. If Leipzig wins, a 106-acre Olympic Village is planned in the Lindenauer harbour basin where 11,000 athletes will live and train. Rostock, on Germany’s Baltic coast, will stage the sailing events. Leipzig will have to punch above its weight as it has a population of less than 500,000 and lacks the international standing of most of its rivals.

Iraqi national team to practice in Germany
SI.com – Aug 7, 2003
“I am really happy that after the terrible events of the war in Iraq there is some good sports news,” Stange was quoted as saying in a statement released by the DFB. “The stay in Germany will be a unique opportunity for our team to make a new beginning and to lay the foundations for the best possible preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches,” Stange was quoted as saying. “Our greatest goal is to take part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. ” Stange said he was continuing the coaching job he got in November 2002. Three months later, he left Iraq before the start of the war, promising to return to rebuild the Iraqi team once hostilities had ended. The coach left Thursday for Damascus, Syria, where the Iraqis will practice for three days before taking part in a tournament also featuring Iran, Cameroon and Uruguay. Iraq will play two matches in November in Australia in another move to put its international program back on track… The runaway Russian premier league leaders lost toMacedonia’s Vardar Skopje in the Champions League secondqualifying round on Wednesday. “Valery Gazzayev’s coaching ideas burst as a soap bubble as[CSKA president] Yevgeny Giner’s millions of dollars were thrownaway. Russian football has been given another slap in the face,”the paper added. Sovietsky Sports, another Russian sports daily, weresimilarly damning. “Persona non-grata,” it said of Gazzayev and his team. “CSKA’s attempt to enter the European football’s high societyended up in total failure. The shock loss by Russia’s leading club to a small side fromthe Balkans was even more painful as it came on the heels of twosuccessive defeats by the country’s national team — also coachedby Gazzayev — to Georgia and Albania in Euro 2004 qualifiers.

Plain-speaking Palios willing to take risks for game’s sake
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 8, 2003
In the over-emotional world of England, even innocuous observations about the team or coach can unleash a whirlwind of headlines. Whatever the rumours surrounding Eriksson and Chelsea, the Swede remains in charge of the national side – certainly while England’s interest in Euro 2004 runs its course – and any attempt to approach a successor would weaken Eriksson’s authority among David Beckham and the other ambitious lions. But in the commercial world of Palios, sounding out potential candidates like Steve McClaren, currently building his managerial reputation at Middlesbrough, makes good business sense. It is all about risk management. “Of course, I have a contingency plan regarding Sven’s eventual replacement,” said Palios, sitting in the basement of the FA’s offices in Soho Square… As well as attempting to address football’s problems with drugs and bungs, Palios has also to juggle the financial commitments of Wembley and Burton. “By definition, they are risks. What I want to do is make sure Wembley is delivered [probably early in time for the 2006 FA Cup final] and have a re-look at the National Football Centre. “Although the sport is crying out for a centre of excellence to accentuate the development of English players and coaches, Palios admitted the Burton scheme was “under review” and that “an exit strategy” was in place. “You have to take a business decision,” he stressed. As for Wembley, Palios added that he “absolutely” might “consider the idea” of Arsenal and Spurs being co-tenants to offset the £757 million cost. “It’s obvious common sense.

Ziese in dispute with Ghana
BBC News – Aug 6, 2003
The GFA informed Ziese that his employment will be terminated on 5 September, in accordance with provisions of his one-year contract. But the German coach has dismissed the GFA decision as “unacceptable. ”

Ziese insists he was hired to lead Ghana to the 2006 World Cup and cannot be held solely responsible for the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2004 Nations Cup. He also denied GFA allegations that his management style was responsible for the decision by many foreign-based players to stay away from the national team. “The GFA’s allegations have absolutely no basis. “It’s normal that in a country like Ghana, where many players are available for selection, some would be unhappy but no one can claim I’m responsible for that. ”

Ziese said he would hold talks with GFA chairman Ben Koufie in order to iron out their differences.

Women make the Beautiful Game their own
Independent Online – Aug 8, 2003
“Sure, we are not yet fully professional. But that’s the route we’re planning to take. “It would be good if each of the 16 PSL teams were to have a women’s team or adopt an already existing team in their area. ”

Ledwaba said the biggest problem was securing financial backing: “To run a professional league along the lines of the PSL would require a lot of money, because the clubs would need to be sponsored as they will be doing a lot of travelling around the country. ”

There can be no doubt that the success of the Halala Cup and the Vodacom regional tournament should prove to corporate South Africa that involvement in the women’s game will be worth their while. The Safa hierarchy have been accused of neglecting women’s football… The Safa hierarchy have been accused of neglecting women’s football. Come on guys, just for once, please prove the accusations wrong. Ledwaba’s hope for South African football is to see Banyana Banyana bring home the World Cup some day soon. If women’s football adopts the attitude and shows the same determination displayed by the “class of 56”, there’s no reason why this should not happen.

Farina urges caution
The Age – Aug 7, 2003
“Unfortunately or fortunately the level of expectation continues to rise. “I think that’s due to the fact we have quality players and then when you do have good results people tend to expect that every time that they go on the park. “I just hope that everyone keeps their feet on the ground and realises what we are trying to achieve and where we are trying to head (qualifying for the 2006 World Cup). “I’d much rather we get the results at the right end of the campaign then the wrong end… Ireland has played 10 internationals in the past 12 months compared to Australia’s one, the home side performing creditably in the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign to sit second in its pool with three wins and a draw in six games. The Irish also had a solid World Cup run last year, drawing with finalist Germany and not losing a game in regular time before bowing out against Spain on penalties in the second round. The Socceroos at least have the luxury of calling on an extra player for this game with Farina expanding the squad from 18 to 20. Manchester City wingback Danny Tiatto and Portsmouth defender Hayden Foxe have been added to the squad along with Millwall’s Tim Cahill who will only train with the group as he’s still ineligible to play. The promising 23-year-old midfielder who played for Samoa at a junior level, was recently given clearance by FIFA to play senior football for Australia from next year. The only squad player who drops out from the win against England is France-based midfielder Mile Sterjovski.

FRANKFURT, Germany – The German football federation (DFB) has invited the Iraqi national team on an all-expenses paid training camp here later this month. Under their German coach Bernd Stange Iraq will set up base in Bad Worishofen, Bavaria, from August 27 to September 13, with all travel and accommodation costs covered by the DFB. They will play a number of friendlies during the tour as part of their preparation for the qualifying stages of the 2006 World Cup. “This visit to Germany is an amazing chance for us to make a fresh start. It’s an ideal base to prepare for the 2006 World Cup,” Stange, in Frankfurt Thursday to finalise details of the trip, said… They will play a number of friendlies during the tour as part of their preparation for the qualifying stages of the 2006 World Cup. “This visit to Germany is an amazing chance for us to make a fresh start. It’s an ideal base to prepare for the 2006 World Cup,” Stange, in Frankfurt Thursday to finalise details of the trip, said. Before the German visit Iraq are due to appear in a three-cornered competition in Tehran against Iran, Cameroon and Uruguay. Stange’s side face Vietnam in their first qualifier for the 2004 Olympic Games early in September. The 55-year-old has managed the Iraqi national team since November 2002 but he left Iraq on February 13 citing fear over war breaking out and his claim that he would lose all his players to the army. He returned to resume his four-year contract after the end of the coalition-led war to topple Saddam Hussein’s regime.

The President said merely looking for scapegoats will not help improve the state of Ghana sports. Burkhard who has been given notice of termination of his contract feels he is being hounded out of office prematurely. His claims his contract expressly states that he was signed to qualify Ghana for the 2006 World Cup and just kicking him out of office because he failed to qualify the Black Stars for the 2004 African Cup of Nations is “unacceptable”. The German did not win a single match as Black Stars coach since arriving here in Accra for his second spell as the coach of the national team. The FA cites non-performance and a frosty relationship between the German and some of the members of the national team as some of the reasons for terminating his contract, which takes effect from September 5. The former Zambia coach has meanwhile reiterated his threat to contest his dismissal if the GFA does not rescind its decision to get rid of him. Burkhard says he will exploit a clause in his contract with the Ghana football Association which allows either party to lodge a compliant with FIFA in the event of either party abrogating the contract… Burkhard says he will exploit a clause in his contract with the Ghana football Association which allows either party to lodge a compliant with FIFA in the event of either party abrogating the contract. Burkhard has a reputation for being litigious after taking on the GFA at FIFA in 1991. He also contested his dismissal by the Zambian football federation in the court of the world football governing body.
