BBC NEWS | UK | Scotland | ‘Major flaws’ in Euro 2008 bid
BBC News – Jun 20, 2003

2012 hopes

Sports Minister Frank McAveety was optimistic about Scotland getting another chance in the 2012 championships. He said: “Obviously we need to wait beyond 2004 to see what the criteria for Uefa will be after the ’04 championships. “Then we can consider whether or not Scotland has learned its lessons from this recent bid and perhaps we can bid for 2012. ”

European football consultant, Alex Flynn, said Scotland and Ireland did not do their homework. He said: “There were many qualities that they possessed but quite frankly, when it comes down to it, it is football politics that counts, and they were found sadly lacking in this area.

Ninety-six clubs currently qualify for the UEFA Cup. The 40 qualifiers from the first phase will then play in eight groups, with three qualifying from each group and then joining eight teams relegated from the Champions League for a final knockout phase. Clubs in the group phase will only play a single match against each other, and there will not be home and away legs as in the Champions League groups. ?There will be more match days and more matches in the future,? UEFA chief executive Gerhard Aigner told journalists. The UEFA Cup winner will play 15 matches. UEFA spokesman Mike Lee said the changes meet the demands of major clubs and should give a boost to the competition, whose television audiences have been flagging because of rivalry from the Champions League. ?It will give some of the clubs more guaranteed European football, which a number have been requesting, but at the same time it sticks within the current calendar,? he said… Three groups would be composed of eight teams and five groups would have six teams, with Europe?s strongest teams concentrated in the smaller groups. The eight group winners and two best runners-up will qualify automatically for the World Cup, with the six other runners-up playing off for the remaining places With hosts Austria and Switzerland automatically entering the European championships in 2008, UEFA said it was able to come up with a straightforward system allowing the seven group winners and runners-up to qualify. The Euro 2008 qualifiers will involve one group of eight teams and six others of seven.

International bottleneck
Telegraph.co.uk – Jul 30, 2003
England played eight games to reach the 2002 World Cup finals (against Germany, Finland, Greece and Albania) and even with the play-offs Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side will have only a 10-game schedule for the European Championship finals in Portugal next summer. That total could almost double as UEFA’s plan is to have two groups of eight and five groups of seven to determine the 14 European qualifiers for Germany 2006 and the 14 countries to join joint-hosts Switzerland and Austria at Euro 2008. In FIFA’s co-ordinated international match calendar for 2004 and 2005, which takes in the qualifying campaign for Germany 2006, there are back-to-back competitive games scheduled for Sept 4 and 8, Oct 9 and 13 (2004), March 26 and 30, June 4 and 8, Sept 3 and 7, Oct 8 and 12 and Nov 12 and 16 (2005). These effectively will be the qualifying dates for the 2006 World Cup finals, with a similar schedule for Euro 2008, and the proposal is that the top two nations from each of the seven groups qualify for the finals with no play-offs… He said: “I think it’s normal, very normal, at a team like Real Madrid to have to fight hard and I think with the arrival of Beckham we will have to try to work harder,” he said. The French international said he did not think the former Manchester United icon would have any trouble settling into the Spanish style of football. “It’s good for him to learn another style, but the most important thing is that he’s going to try for the team. “Zidane, who reiterated yesterday that he will retire when his contract runs out in two years, said it was important that Beckham was quickly accepted by the other players. “When I arrived I was well welcomed by the team and I can say that Beckham is also well welcomed by the team,” Zidane said. “In that way he can be a part of the group.

FA prepare to tighten bond with Eriksson
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 22, 2003
Signing such a new deal would not preclude a club swooping for Eriksson, particularly one of Chelsea’s financial clout, but the FA would at least enjoy increased compensation. Whether the cash-strapped FA could improve his already generous package is another issue. But clearly they want stability in the lead-up to Euro 2004. If Eriksson’s men achieve the result they need in Istanbul to qualify automatically, then England will use the free time allotted for a potential play-off to host a high-profile friendly on Nov 15.

Lift for Vogts as Lambert sees out Euro qualifiers
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 14, 2003
“It will cost a good deal of money to fund this programme – maybe £500,000 a year – but I think we are not far away from finding it. We have also been talking to the Government about facilities such as full-length indoor pitches. The lack of these training facilities hurt our bid to host Euro 2008 and we want to have five, maybe seven of these pitches available all round the country. “The manager expressed pleasure at the progress of Fletcher, who was the subject of conflicting pressures when he had to decide which country should claim his allegiance. Fletcher’s mother is Irish and not only did she urge him to wear the green but Roy Keane added his considerable weight to the argument. Ranged against the maternal alliance with the captain of Manchester United were Fletcher’s Scottish father and the ultra-patriotic Old Trafford manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, a presence at least as forceful as Keane. “Roy Keane and his mother wanted him for Ireland but he said to me, ‘I feel so Scottish in my heart’,” said Vogts… The lack of these training facilities hurt our bid to host Euro 2008 and we want to have five, maybe seven of these pitches available all round the country. “The manager expressed pleasure at the progress of Fletcher, who was the subject of conflicting pressures when he had to decide which country should claim his allegiance. He used Darren during the pre-season games and he did well, especially against Celtic.

Events tsar appointed
BBC News – Jul 3, 2003
The executive hopes Mr Williams, who spent 25 years in a similar role in Australia, can bring more high profile events to Scotland. Although Scotland already hosts major events such as the Edinburgh Festival, the capital’s Hogmanay celebrations, and The Open golf tournament, its record has been chequered. The country will host the MTV Europe Music Video Awards in Leith, near Edinburgh, in November, but missed out in its joint bid with Ireland to host the Euro 2008 football championships… He said: “In Australia, I have seen how events can not only raise the international profile of a country, but also demonstrate the capability of the nation. “I believe that there is huge potential for the right portfolio of events to showcase Scotland’s dramatic landscape, its sporting heritage and its dynamic culture. Mr Williams added: “When you have events, have them in places where people want to visit and the event is the catalyst for them to come. “That’s what we want to do with events here – provide the catalyst that says ‘yes let’s go to Scotland, see the event and visit the country’. ”

‘Too many chiefs’

Mr Williams, whose appointment lasts for five years, will have an annual salary of ?95,000.
