Becker: From grass court to law court
CNN International – Sep 25, 2003
It made who I am today. After his retirement from competitive tennis, Becker managed to carve out a seemingly successful business career. He launched a sports marketing company, played a part in Germany’s successful bid to stage the 2006 football World Cup, managed Germany’s Davis Cup team and publicly backed campaigns to combat xenophobia and anti-Semitism in the country. The later project was close to his heart. He said he considered leaving Germany because he feared for the safety of his family amid increasing right-wing racist violence. “I have a black wife and black children and I’m not just talking about it, I live this problem day to day,” he said in 1999. In 1993, Becker had married former model and actress Barbara Feltus — daughter of a former U.
Fifa to probe Tanzanian crisis
BBC News – Sep 26, 2003
Fifa has announced it will investigate the suspension of the Fat executive committee, after the Fat general assembly replaced the 15-man body with an interim committee earlier this week. “Fifa will send an ad-hoc delegation to Tanzania and discuss with all the parties involved,” Nicolas Maingot, a Fifa media department official, told BBC Sport. Maingot added that Fifa will decide what action – if any – to take after analysing the delegation’s report, although no date has yet been set for the delegation’s arrival in Tanzania. The Fat general assembly suspended the executive committee for allegedly neglecting their duties, after chairman Muhidin Ndolanga and general secretary Michael Wambura had a series of disagreements… The Fat general assembly suspended the executive committee for allegedly neglecting their duties, after chairman Muhidin Ndolanga and general secretary Michael Wambura had a series of disagreements. The duo have accused each other of incompetence and fought two court battles earlier this year. The crisis within Fat could overshadow Tanzania’s preparations for next month’s crucial 2006 Nations Cup and World Cup qualifier against Kenya.
I prefer club management, says Eriksson
Independent Online – Sep 27, 2003
We have a big game against Turkey and hopefully we will do well in Euro 2004. ”
Despite persistent rumours that Eriksson, a former coach of Lazio, will ditch England for club football the Swede insists he is happy to see out his contract with England, to run until after the 2006 World Cup. The FA moved to insist that Eriksson’s latest comments did not conflict with this intention. “Further to the comments attributed to Sven-Goran Eriksson, we wish to reaffirm that he remains under contract with the FA until 2006,” said the FA’s head of media Adrian Bevington. “Contrary to some reports, there are no escape clauses in this deal… ”

“I think that a player who doesn’t train and who isn’t playing can not be considered for selection for the national team,” Parreira said. Rangers remain on top of the Scottish Premier League after two late goals gave them a 3-1 victory at home against Dundee. Celtic had been on top earlier in the day as Henrik Larsson fired their winner in their 2-1 win at Hibernian, a match in which referee Alan Freeland managed to court controversy by refusing to change his shirt after complaints it clashed with those of the Celtic players. Scotland look set to be without striker Steven Thompson for next month’s crucial Euro 2004 qualifier against Lithuania. Victory at Hampden Park will earn Berti Vogts’s team a play-off spot, as long as rivals Iceland, as expected, fail to beat Germany in Hamburg… “He must be considered doubtful,” said Rangers manager Alex McLeish. It is not just the Premiership which draws criticism for its high number of foreign imports – the same goes for Germany’s Bundesliga. Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has criticised the German Football Federation (DFB) for not investing in German youth. “The DFB has not invested a single mark for the development of young players. That is why nothing has happened,” said Rummenigge.

ESPN – Sep 23, 2003
5 million more to buy another team in an extremely volatile financial predicament. Few understood the deal’s rationale. Why would any businessman savvy enough to have made hundreds of millions as an art dealer volunteer to buy into another mess? All the momentum from the team’s 1997 World Series title had been washed away by former owner Wayne Huizenga’s selloff and John Henry, who bought the team following the 1998 season, alienated potential fans by pushing for public financing for a new ballpark before he had thoroughly introduced himself. Heading into Loria’s first season as Marlins owner, with Samson serving as his right-hand man, season tickets had dwindled to fewer than 2,000 — not a good sign for a team that finished second-to-last in the National League in attendance. Only the Expos proved less of a box-office hit. “Florida was an incredibly underperforming market and while the Marlins were a small-revenue team, they are still in a large market,” Samson said. “That means we could come in and truly make a difference.
Badru named Tanzania coach
BBC News – Sep 24, 2003
He replaces Mshindo Msolla, who resigned after failing to guide the Taifa Stars to the 2004 Nations Cup finals. Badru will be assisted by the former Tanzania international Charles Boniface Mkwasa. His first task is to get the country past Kenya’s Harambee Stars in October’s preliminary qualifier for the 2006 Nations Cup and World Cup. “Hafidh has sufficient experience and we believe he is the man suitable for the job,” said Mwina Kaduguda, secretary-general of the interim committee of the Football Association of Tanzania. Badru was Msolla’s assistant during the 2004 Nations Cup qualifiers and managed Zanzibar’s national team when they won the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in 1995. Kaduguda said the new coaching pair had been given short-term deals to lead the national team but declined to state the duration of their contracts. The FA said a long-term contract could be offered to Badru and Mkwasa if the Taifa Stars reach the group stage of the joint 2006 qualifiers.
Ballack fills Beckenbauer’s boots
uefa.com – UEFA.com – Sep 26, 2003
It was great fun to play alongside such gifted players and I’m especially grateful to coaches Christoph Daum and Klaus Toppmöller for all they taught me. Why did you choose Bayern over Real Madrid [CF] in 2002?Ballack: It wasn’t that I decided against joining Madrid, I decided in favour of Germany. I felt it would be important to play for the top team in the Bundesliga before the 2006 [FIFA] World Cup. You wear No13, a supposedly unlucky number. Why is that?Ballack: It was Rudi Völler’s old Leverkusen number. He ended his playing career to become director of football when I arrived. He asked me to wear his number and that’s why I do it for my club and the national team.
