ESPNsoccernet – Euro 2008 – Spain v Ukraine Report
go.com – Oct 2, 2003
2, 2003, 1:04 PM UKSpain 2-1 UkrainePAMADRID, October 2 (Euro 2004) – Spain coach Inaki Saez admits he is much more concerned about how his own team performs in their final scheduled Euro 2004 qualifier on October 11 than events elsewhere which could deny his team a chance of automatic qualification. The date marks the final round of Euro 2004 qualifying matches, and Spain, a team packed with superstars such as Real Madrid’s Raul, need a minor miracle to leapfrog Greece and go to the top of Group 6. They trail the Greeks by just one point, but Otto Rehhagel’s team face group whipping boys Northern Ireland and have home advantage. Victory in Athens will mean Greece qualify, all doubts removed, but a draw or a defeat against the team who have yet to even score in their seven group matches, will leave the door open for Spain. Saez can see Northern Ireland doing his team a huge favour, but his big fear is that his own players may freeze when confronted by the enormity of the occasion… The Spaniards travel to Armenia, where the home team have given a good account of themselves so far in qualifying – drawing against the Ukraine, beating Northern Ireland and losing by a slender 1-0 margin against Greece. And as he named the players who will make the trip, Saez insisted on Monday that he would not be taking the Armenians lightly, and nor would his players be allowed to. Should Saturday week not yield the results which Spain want, their fate would be decided by a play-off against runners-up from another group. “We’ve seen Armenia improve a lot recently because they try to play football,” said Saez. Recalling Spain’s 3-0 home win against Armenia in April, in which the scoreline remained goalless until Diego Tristan broke the deadlock after 64 minutes, Saez added: “They are difficult with some skilful quick players. Maybe they lack experience, but it won’t be easy. “Imagine if Northern Ireland draw and we don’t win.

Beckham boost for England
BBC News – Oct 3, 2003
“I’ve still got a doubt about Sunday but he ran fine with a bandage on
Thursday and if he has a reaction then maybe he’ll need another day or so. That
still leaves plenty of time for England. ”

Beckham had not trained since playing the full 90 minutes against Valencia in which he suffered an acute inflammation of the sole of his right foot. “The
treatment was anti-inflammation drugs, a bandage and physiotherapy on the
affected area,” added Hernandez. Beckham was struggling with a groin injury before the Euro 2004 qualifiers against Macedonia and Liechtenstein, but recovered in time to play. The England squad to face Turkey will be announced at 1900 BST on Sunday… ”

Liverpool in Boumsong talks
BBC News – Oct 1, 2003
The 23-year-old had been linked with a move to Anfield throughout the summer after revealing he would not renew his contract with Auxerre. But no deal has so far materialised. On Wednesday, Boumsong said: “There has been contact with Liverpool but I have not signed anything. ”

Liverpool’s defence has looked brittle through the early part of the season… And boss Gerard Houllier is thought to be keen to bolster his backline, with Boumsong available on a free transfer when his contract expires in the summer of 2004. Auxerre boss Guy Roux is battling to fend off Liverpool’s interest in both Boumsong and striker Djibril Cisse. Boumsong is on the cusp of France’s international set-up and could be part of the squad to face Israel in their Euro 2004 qualifier. The squad is announced by boss Jacques Santini on Thursday.

Eriksson stonewalls Anglo Scots
BBC News – Oct 2, 2003
Thompson can work the flank, tackle back and dig in, cross a good ball, is good with set pieces – and is naturally left-footed. A procession of non left-footed players such as Kieron Dyer, Steve Gerrard and Owen Hargreaves have all been part of an experiment that has included pairing two full-backs in Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge. But Thompson is not even in the reckoning for England’s crunch Euro 2004 qualifier in Istanbul on 11 October. Grip’s assertion that “we will watch Thompson after the match with Turkey” will be of small consolation to the midfielder and is akin to learning the.

Ballack could miss German Euro tie
CNN International – Oct 2, 2003
Germany top Group Five with 15 points, two more than second-placed Iceland, and need a draw from their final qualifier to make sure of a direct place for next year’s finals. Ballack, hurt in Bayern’s Champions League draw with Anderlecht on Tuesday, could not train on Thursday. A club spokesman said that if he was unfit on Saturday he would probably miss Germany’s Group Five qualifier against Iceland in Hamburg. Germany welcome back Werder Bremen midfielder Fabian Ernst after a one-year absence and hope for a much-improved display after the 0-0 draw in Reykjavik last month. Squad: Goalkeepers: Kahn (Bayern Munich), Lehmann (Arsenal)Defenders: Baumann ( Bremen), Friedrich, Hartmann, Rehmer (all Hertha Berlin), Hinkel (Stuttgart), Woerns ( Dortmund)Midfielders: Ballack (Bayern Munich), Ernst ( Bremen), Kehl ( Dortmund), Christian Rahn (Hamburg), Ramelow, Schneider (both Leverkusen)Attackers: Fredi Bobic (Hertha Berlin), Miroslav Klose (Kaiserslautern), Oliver Neuville (Leverkusen), Kevin Kuranyi ( Stuttgart). Luque recalledDeportivo de la Coruna forward Alberto Luque was the surprise choice as Spanish coach Inaki Saez announced an 18-man squad for the European Championship qualifier against Armenia.

Leicester set for Brazil test
BBC News – Oct 1, 2003
Organising the game was no easy task; they have come to an agreement with the European clubs where they will not drag their stars back across the Atlantic for a mere friendly. The game, then, would have to take place in Europe. But with the local teams involved in the Euro 2004 qualifiers, the best option available was the proposal from Jamaica to play in England. It is a choice which has been criticised back in Brazil. One local commentator suggested it might be better preparation for Brazil to play a training game against their own reserves. Scoring record

Even so, there should be plenty of points of interest for those who go along to the Walker Stadium. Ronaldo, for example, should not lack motivation… One local commentator suggested it might be better preparation for Brazil to play a training game against their own reserves. Scoring record

Even so, there should be plenty of points of interest for those who go along to the Walker Stadium. Ronaldo, for example, should not lack motivation. He has declared his aim to overtake Pele’s total of international goals. At the moment he has 48 to Pele’s 77, and the game against Jamaica may give him the chance to diminish the difference. There should also be the chance to observe Brazil’s new generation of attacking talent. Centre-forward Adriano and attacking midfielder Kaka are being eased into the side, and are likely to get plenty of playing time in Leicester.

Valois back in frame
Edinburgh Evening News – Oct 3, 2003
“They are never one-sided affairs and it’s a match we’re looking forward to. They have signed quality players such as Craig Burley and Fabrizio Ravanelli and Dundee look like being formidable opponents who will be difficult to keep out of the top three or four in the SPL. ” Out-of-favour striker Andy Kirk, meanwhile, has been named in Northern Ireland’s squad for this month’s Euro 2004 qualifier against Greece in Athens despite not starting a game this season for the Jambos.

Sven ready to go on the attack
go.com – Oct 3, 2003
But Eriksson, boosted by David Beckham’s return to training at Real Madrid, may still pair his most creative attacking forwards in Istanbul on October 11, when England need a draw to qualify automatically for the finals in Portugal next summer. The England coach today effectively confirmed that Rooney would not again be playing in the hole, where he filled in for Scholes during the last qualifier against Liechtenstein, in Istanbul next Saturday. However, the England coach, who names his squad on Sunday, told the FootballAssociation’s website: ‘Paul played well against Stuttgart so helooks fit for Turkey, which is very good. ‘I don’t think that he needs a great deal of physical preparation to play andhe was not out for too long. ‘He is very important but it does not mean that he cannot play in the sameteam as Wayne Rooney. We did it the last time that we played against Turkey, after all. ‘While Scholes looks set to confirm his fitness, Eriksson has a fresh worryover Rio Ferdinand, who is said to be doubtful for Manchester United’s gameagainst Birmingham tomorrow with a foot injury.

Vogts out for revenge
BBC News – Oct 2, 2003
Vogts is still angered by that 1-0 defeat in Kaunas, which has left Scotland in need of a victory at Hampden to have any chance of qualifying for Euro 2004. And it appears there is little love lost between Vogts and the Baltic nation, as the German branded them a team of play-actors. Lithuania’s goal that evening came from a dubious penalty and Vogts was unimpressed by their tactics. “We remember all the bad words from Lithuania and we know big divers come
from Lithuania,” said Vogts. “I have watched a lot of videos… But having spoken to the German manager, a prot?g? of Vogts, he has every confidence in his compatriots. “A draw is enough and I spoke to Rudi Voller – and there’s no chance for Iceland. ”

Vogts was also thankful to the Germans for not reporting Christian Dailly’s “cheat” allegations to Uefa. “It’s no problem now,” he insisted. “But I must say a thank you to Uefa and to the German FA because they did nothing against Christian Dailly. “That was great because maybe he would have been out for two or three matches.

Vieira, Makelele out of France squad
go.com – Oct 1, 2003
‘We want to have the full set – eight games, eight victories,’ He said. ‘You have to respect the national jersey and the opponents, we won’t leave out our keyplayers to prepare for the future. ‘We are not going to take it easy – I want the players toconcentrate and we are above all competitors. ‘ ‘As soon as we have the chance we will bring in new players. The European championship is in eight months – people say it’s along way away but there isn’t much time for preparation. ‘We have five matches left, four of which are friendlies. That isn’t a lot of time to improve certain things.
