Shaddad criticises Caf
BBC News – Oct 8, 2003
Sudan host Eritrea in Sunday’s first leg preliminary round match. Shaddad said the prospect of 19 national teams being unable to play competitive international football for three years – should they be eliminated during the knockout stage – has serious consequences for the African game. “It’s going to be very, very serious for football in Africa, not just for my country but for all the nations that lose. “We’ve played Eritrea four times and lost three of the matches, so there’s a great possibility that Sudan will be eliminated,” said Shaddad, a member of Caf’s technical committee.

Ireland got off to the worst possible start to this qualifying campaign by losing out to Russia away and Switzerland (no arguments there). Followed soon after by the overdue departure of Mick McCarthy. Then when Brian Kerr was appointed people said that this campaign should be written off and he should concentrate on building a team good enough to get Ireland to the 2006 World Cup. At the time and in the state we were that kind of attitude could be condoned. But however, after hauling ourselves right back into contention with a string of great results (in an unbeaten run under Brian Kerr) people are still using our bad start as a kind of a safety net, saying that it doesn?t really matter if we don?t gain automatic qualification or at least make it into the playoffs. Now that we have done so well to get ourselves into the position from which we can book our place in Portugal we must grab it with both hands… Come on ye Boys in Green! Indeed Saturday promises to be a big day for Irish sport. Hours before Ireland?s crunch Euro 2004 clash against Switzerland, Ireland?s rugby players will open their World Cup 2003 campaign in Gosford, Australia against Romania. The World Cup will kick off on this Friday with the opening ceremony in Sydney followed by the opening game of the finals. Australia v Argentina (the other game in our Pool). After their opening round meeting with Romania, Ireland must wait until October 18 to play their second match against Namibia in Sydney. Then comes the first big test when they face Argentina on October 26 in Adelaide before their crunch meeting with the host nation Australia on November 1st in Melbourne. This is a good Irish team but I think talks of a last four appearance could be a little premature.

Worryingly, he sounds a bit like Dr Ian Paisley. Then the Aussie PM, John Howard, comes on to a chorus of boos. “I declare the Rugby World Cup of 2003 officially open!” he brays over a fanfare of trumpets. Some large inflatables are then erected; long floppy tubes which are apparently supposed to be One-Eyed Supporters. It’s an open goal, this, but sadly the Guardian doesn’t do cock jokes. 10amWorld in Union is sung for the 243rd time today, although this version for some reason segues into a muzak performance of Wagner’s Ring Cycle.

England rebels cave in after Ferdinand plea
Guardian Unlimited – Oct 9, 2003
The reversal, following long talks with the Football Association, came after a personal intervention by the player at the centre of the row, Rio Ferdinand, who had been dropped from the squad after failing to take an official drug test. He told his teammates he wanted them to play on… But he has lost a significant asset in the goodwill of the players, and he said he would listen to their complaints. “I have heard what they had to say on Rio _ and on the general issue of anti-doping rules, the players have very strong views. ” Had the team pulled out of the fixture England would have been disqualified from Euro 2004 and probably the 2006 World Cup, but the threat to withdraw their labour, first made at a team meeting on Tuesday evening, turned out to be empty. That did not always seem the case during a day of brinkmanship partly stoked by the intervention of Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager and a former Scotland coach, who advised one of his players in the squad to make the FA sweat. After training yesterday morning, a players’ committee, led by Beckham, Owen, Gary Neville, Sol Campbell, and goalkeeper David James, demanded that Ferdinand be reinstated. The FA rejected the players’ demand out of hand. Ferdinand was excluded after failing to supply a sample to drug testers two weeks ago. – NCF – Recap

that’s one of thelowest things I’ve ever seen in a football game. “Just then, Alvarez cut him off and said his team wouldn’tdiscuss the play. “You saw the film,” Alvarez told reporters.

2 million tickets were due to go on sale from 25 euros upwards but the German 2006 World Cup organising commitee are to consult football?s world governing body FIFA about making the cheapest ticket 33 euros. ?We have to keep ourselves in profit,? vowed organising committee vice-president Horst R. Germany are still searching for sponsors to fill two vacant spots with organising chief Franz Beckenbauer admitting: ?We are finding it very difficult at the moment. ? Hiking ticket prices appears to be the best option although matches will still be nowhere near as expensive as the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

… Risk Analysis for Securitization Covering Cancellation of…
Insurance Journal – Oct 9, 2003
The innovative securitization, Golden Goal Finance Ltd, is the first to cover terrorism risk, as well as the first to cover risk to a sports event. The $260 million transaction was structured by CSFB on behalf of the F?d?ration Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the world football governing body, which is based in Zurich. The securitization provides for capital markets coverage of revenue lost to FIFA in the event of incompletion of the event. The bond has achieved an investment grade rating of A3 from Moody’s Investors Service. “This securitization demonstrates that terrorism risk can be effectively quantified for investment purposes,” said Gordon Woo, chief architect of the RMS Terrorism Risk Model. “It also shows that the capital markets are willing to provide alternative financial coverage for terrorism events.
