Wild weekend given real look of the Irish
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 30, 2003
In fact this game is a key part of a rather interesting international programme for Australian Rules Football. This year they are playing Ireland. In 2004, also Ireland; 2005: Ireland; 2006: Ireland. In 2007, the Australians are playing Ireland, and in 2008, Ireland are playing them. 2009 hasn’t been worked out yet but the AFL are starting to look at the possibility of playing Ireland, and confirmation is expected soon. When it comes to Ireland and sport, as a pair of our local commentators say, “too much is never enough!” But even after Friday night, the Irishness of the weekend has just begun… (As a point of note, a lot of Irish and Australian interest centres on the Irish horse Holy Orders, trained by Willie Mullins. Those dressed in green hope it can duplicate the feat of another Irish horse in Media Puzzle, which won the Melbourne Cup last year. ) But speaking of the Rugby World Cup – and who isn’t in these parts? – the climax of this Irish weekend in Melbourne will come just three hours after the Derby is run when, at Melbourne’s enclosed Telstra Dome,. This has been a keenly awaited contest and much is riding on it.

China Football Association vice president Zhang Jilong was quoted by state media as saying the association had made it their most important task in the next 10 years. ?We choose to bid for the World Cup 2014 since 2006?s event has been decided in Germany and 2010?s in an African country,? Zhang was cited as saying on the websites of the China Daily and the Xinhua news agency. He said China will submit an application immediately after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Their chances of success appear non-existent with world football?s governing body taking a decision to give the 2014 World Cup finals to South America at a meeting on March 7. FIFA president Joseph Blatter said then the decision followed a recommendation of a strategic studies commission, which he heads, and fulfilled a ?long time wish? of the South American confederation to see the world?s top football tournament return to South America. youth team player at the 1999 world championships in Nigeria. During the last year he has become a rising talent on the national team, which begins qualification matches for the 2006 World Cup in January. He also soon might be playing for a European club. For the moment, though, he’s focused on winning the Major League Soccer title with the Chicago Fire. Despite losing three of their top five scorers from last year, as well as their coach, the Fire had the best regular-season record. The team also returned to renovated Soldier Field and averaged nearly 30,000 fans for its final two home games.

Putting an MLS team in San Diego will take work
San Diego Union Tribune – Oct 29, 2003
The idea is that the extra games will help the region’s cash-strapped federations from smaller countries raise money, particularly if they draw the United States or Mexico. The 34 CONCACAF countries will be divided into first-round groups of two or three, from which the 12 winners will advance to the semifinal round, from which six advance to the final round. The top three get automatic byes to the 2006 World Cup in Germany; the fourth-place team enters a two-leg playoff against a team from another region (Oceania, South America or Asia) for one additional spot. The qualifying draw is Dec. 5 in Frankfurt, Germany. ONLY IN SOCCER

Spanish clubs Valencia and Castellon played an eight-minute match last week. Actually, it was the continuation of their King’s Cup match from two weeks earlier that was suspended in the 82nd minute after fans from third-division Castellon, angry over a penalty kick awarded to first-division Valencia in a 1-1 tie, pelted referee Jesus Tellez Sanchez with all variety of objects.

Malawi appoint new coach
BBC News – Oct 30, 2003
Ng’onamo has been assistant coach of the national team over the last two years. He worked under Danish coach Kim Splidsboel and Alan Gillet, who quit the job in October. Two assistant coaches will work with Ng’onamo – John Kaputa, who will look after the team’s welfare matters, while the second spot will go to Yassin Osman or Gilbert Chirwa, both former internationals. The appointment of a caretaker coach follows the failure of the FA to secure funding for the return of Gillet… Gillet quit his post after Malawi’s first leg game in Addis Ababa but it was thought that a deal would be done for him to remain in charge. FA vice-president Shammer Suleman told the BBC Sport website that the local panel have been given a chance to prove themselves worthy of a long-term deal. “Football is about results and if they are able to deliver the goods, I don’t think that we will have any problems in giving them permanent jobs,” he said. Malawi’s chances of qualifying for the final group stage of the 2006 qualifiers were enhanced by their 3-1 win in Addis Ababa.

Outrage and disbelief as world soccer body condemns Israel, not Hamas
Jewish World Review – Oct 29, 2003
This strike did not cause any injuries. But at the same time FIFA has refused to
condemn a Palestinian rocket attack on an Israeli soccer field last week which did cause injuries. With the soccer World Cup, which takes place only once every four years, just weeks away, it is a time of mounting emotion
for the hundreds of millions of people across the globe who passionately follow the game. As FIFA meets in the next few days to decide what action to take against Israel, the double standards involved could not be
more obvious. Up to now FIFA, which sees itself as a purely sporting body, has gone out of its way to avoid politics, and has
refrained from criticizing even the most appalling human rights abuses connected to soccer players and stadiums. NOT A WORD ABOUT SADDAM AND THE TALIBAN

When Saddam Hussein’s son Uday had Iraqi soccer players tortured in 1997 after they failed to qualify for the 1998 FIFA
World Cup Finals in France, FIFA remained silent. Uday, who was chairman of the Iraqi soccer association, had star players
tortured again in 1998… “WE ARE NOT IN POLITICS”

The outrage felt in soccer-mad Israel at these astonishing double standards is all the greater since FIFA president Sepp Blatter
has made it clear that FIFA should not become involved in politics. Following calls last December from German politicians that
Iran should be banned from participating in the forthcoming World Cup (which starts in Germany on June 9, 2006) because of
repeated Holocaust denial by the Iranian president, Blatter said “We’re not going to enter into any political declarations. We in
football, if we entered into such discussions, then it would be against our statutes. We are not in politics. ”

Indeed so emboldened does Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad now feel by FIFA’s support that he announced last
week that he will likely attend Iran’s opening match against Mexico in Nuremberg on June 11. Holocaust denial is a serious
crime punishable by a prison term of up to five years in Germany, but Ahmadinejad no doubt feels that powerful international
bodies like FIFA will protect him. A BLIND EYE TO DUBAI

Meanwhile FIFA (and other sporting bodies) continually turn a blind eye to boycotts of Israeli sportsmen.

London: Blackburn manager Graeme Souness is facing a three-match touchline ban after his bust-up with Southampton No. 2 Dennis Rofe in Sunday?s Premiership defeat. Souness could also be fined ? 50,000 by the Football Association after it studies the referee?s report into the fracas which saw police, stewards and staff intervene. BBC SPORT | Rugby Union | Welsh | Madden quits Scarlets
BBC News – Oct 28, 2003
Scarlets chief executive, Stuart Gallacher, said: “I have been disappointed in Martyn’s attitude and believe he has let down the coaching staff and our supporters. “Martyn has been a popular player with the fans and has contributed to our success but there is no room at Stradey Park for anyone who is less than 100% committed. ”

Madden has won five caps for Wales but has suffered with a shoulder injury this year and missed out on a place in national coach Steve Hansen’s final World Cup squad.
