Eriksson’s side coped with the hostile atmosphere, on and off the pitch, withmissiles being thrown into David James’ penalty area, and with a horrifyingpenalty miss by David Beckham. They coped with an unseemly incident in the tunnel at half-time, with claimsthat Alpay pushed Beckham in the face, sparking a melee in which Emile Heskeyand Emre supposedly had to be parted. Indeed, displaying guts, gusto and not inconsiderable guile, they evokedmemories of the national side’s similarly brave display six years ago to the dayin Rome to qualify for the 1998 World Cup. Once again, England’s spine, quite simply, refused to buckle. With SolCampbell and John Terry immense at the back, the midfield quartet were tigerishand James could not be beaten. The events of the past week may have, indeed, brought the squad closertogether. For this was all about industry rather than industrial action.

“There is a certain stability and trust to the current group that I want to maintain. ”Striker Djibril Cisse and defender Philippe Mexes have been left out of the squad and will instead join the Under-21s. But Santini has made clear that the door has not been closed on the Auxerre duo’s chances of forcing their way back into the senior squad. “We have a limited number of places in the squad since we can only call up 18 players,” Santini continued. “But if we have a problem with one of our strikers or defenders, either Djibril or Philippe could well be called up and have to join us in Germany on Wednesday. ”Real Madrid star Zinedine Zidane will skipper the side in the absence of defender Marcel Desailly, who has a hip problem, while midfielder Patrick Vieira (thigh) also misses out. Fabien Barthez remains the team’s first choice goalkeeper despite the breakdown of his move to Marseille. Santini insisted: “I am not worried about him, as this does not affect his place with the national team. “This match is the last of the year for us and by January 1 am sure he will have found a new club, whether this is Marseille or another European outfit. ”Santini admits the match will offer a useful gauge as to the team’s progress ahead of the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal next summer. “This match is a good opportunity to test our real level of football,” he said. “And we hope we will confirm the excellent form and solidity we have showed during our qualification process against a team like Germany who are a reference on a world level.

11, 2003, 12:00 PM UKWales 2-3 S&M: Damp squibPAThis was not the send off to the play-offs that Mark Hughes wanted, as hisside fell apart in the final minutes to make it four Euro 2004 qualifiers on thetrot without a win. John Hartson scored from the spot, Robert Earnshaw head home in injury time, but Wales were left weary and ragged as Serbia and Montenegro – who wereoutplayed for long spells – grabbed two late goals to clinch victory. Whoever Wales now get in the play-offs will be more than aware that in thoselast four group games, the Welsh have wilted badly in the final third of eachmatch. Their running style works when they can blitz their way ahead, but that hasnot been the case of late and Hughes must be worried that confidence is nowbeing sapped at the killer time en route to the Portugal finals they thought wasthere for the taking a few months back. This was to have been the golden moment where Wales qualified for a majorfinals for the first time since 1958. It has not quite turned out like that after a few recent hiccups, but Waleswere still determined to have a party for their sell-out Millennium Stadiumfans. The FA of Wales made sure the night had a golden start, however. They presented ‘golden caps’ before the game to 11 of the 22 Welshmen whohave topped 50 caps for their country. That list, of course, included MarkHughes plus Andy Melville, Gary Speed and Mark Pembridge from the current squad. Mickey Thomas, Dia Davies and Kevin Ratcliffe were among others hailed by thevast support.

The stadium, the roof of which was supposed to be completely transparent but now has what has been described as “a hybrid architectural structure”, will host two group matches during the tournament. Athletics trackEURO 2004™ tournament director António Laranjo hailed the venue as a multi-purpose stadium – like the Coimbra Municipal stadium, the Magalhães Pessoa stadium also includes a full 400-metre athletics track. He explained: “It is a project that not only has to fulfil the necessary requirements to host UEFA football matches but has also brought other advantages to the city, such as a hotel and a shopping centre, that will only be finished after the tournament. “Extra amenitiesFurther plans ahead of EURO 2004™ include a sporting pavilion in the immediate vicinity of the stadium, which is to be renovated and extended by the city council. This and other areas will facilitate the provision of complementary support services, such as a media centre.

FAI again miss out on Euro 2008
Irish Independent – Nov 6, 2003
A joint bid from Ireland and Scotland was rejected by UEFA in December in favour of Switzerland and Austria. But the winning bid is now in jeopardy after the collapse of a deal to build a €44m stadium in the Austria’s Klagenfurt. The FAI’s Chief Executive Fran Rooney last night admitted that if UEFA re-open the bidding the association will again be hindered by the stadium issue.

Hampden is roaring again
BBC News – Oct 12, 2003
And I hope there are plenty out there who wanted Berti Vogts exiled will have the decency to get on their knees and start grovelling. It is a terrible side to the Scottish mentality that we want to judge people too quickly and too readily. Somehow it is not in our psyche to give a guy an even break. Vogts made his share of mistakes when he arrived here and last week he confessed to me that there were times when did wonder what on earth he was doing here. But he weathered the storm, stuck in at his English lessons and then began to develop a wee sense of humour – a pre-requisite if you are involved in the wacky world of Scottish football. I’m not saying that he is ready for a stand-up routine in Las Vegas just yet, but he sure has learned how to relax and go with the flow. And he sure has developed a fantastic spirit in the dressing room… Furthermore things can only get better. On top of what the big team is doing the Under 21s are through to a play-off in their tournament, after winning a group that included Germany. The SFA have offered to host the competition and my Uefa mole tells me that if we win the play-off we have a good chance of winning the bid as a token of compensation for being blown away in our bid for Euro 2008. And this time we won’t have the Irish to hold us back. On top of all that our two top sides are making their mark in the Champions League. Crisis? What crisis?.

The Scots’ inability to create when it mattered may be evidence of a lack ofoverall quality in a squad that has improved steadily but unspectacularly sincesuffering the embarrassment of a draw in the Faroe Islands 13 months ago. But a flaw in their collective temperament was also blindingly obvious whentime after time the blue shirts lost their cool in the face of over-reactionfrom their opponents. April’s game in Kaunas had been settled by a dodgy penalty conceded by JackieMcNamara and Berti Vogts’ pre-match labelling of the visitors as divers had notgone unnoticed in the Baltic. The home fans were incensed when, time after time, a yellow shirt would hitthe deck as if its wearer had been picked out by a sniper, with Barasa the chiefculprit. That added to the atmosphere but the fact that the home players also losttheir cool did nothing to help their cause. McNamara went in late on Donatas Vencevicius and both players were booked byexasperated referee Claude Colombo, who had already yellow-carded Naysmith for areckless challenge on Barasa. An early second-half breakthrough almost came their way when a McFadden cornerfound Stevie Crawford unmarked but his glancing header was hoofed off the lineby Deividas Cesnauskas, who had come on at half-time having played for theunder-21s the previous night.

Patrick Kluivert opened the scoring after 43 minutes and goals from Wesley Sneijder, a Pierre van Hooijdonk penalty, Rafael van der Vaart and Arjen Robben sealed the win. Advocaat showed he was prepared to take no risks ahead of the play-offs and left Frank de Boer and Boudewijn Zenden on the bench with both men one yellow card away from suspension. Andre Ooijer and Giovanni van Bronkhorst stepped in although the on-loan Barcelona star did not get off to the best of starts. With Holland on the offensive, Van Bronckhorst and club team-mate Marc Overmars lined up a shot but in their eagerness to hit the target they only succeeded in kicking each other. Holland`s woes continued when Kluivert`s shot appeared goalbound until it struck winger Andy van der Meyde and the same thing happened shortly afterwards when Philip Cocu`s effort was blocked by Sneijder. Moldova keeper Evghenii Hmaruc was eventually called into action after 40 minutes and he was equal to the task with a smart low save to deny Overmars. By then, Holland could have been behind.

11, 2003, 12:00 PM UKAustria 2-3 Czechs: Koller jubilationPAVIENNA, Oct 11 (Reuters) – The Czech Republic snatched a 3-2 win against 10-man Austria with a stoppage-time goal from giant striker Jan Koller in a lively Euro 2004 qualifier on Saturday in which, on paper, neither team had anything left to play for. The unbeaten Czechs had already qualified as Group Threewinners and had not lost for 17 matches, while Austria had nochance of qualifying. But the home side played with spirit onlyto be outgunned by superior opponents led by Pavel Nedved. ‘We saw the class of Nedved and (substitute) Koller, whofought until the last minute,’ Austria midfielder Mario Schopptold Austrian television station ORF. The Czechs began to take control as early as the sixthminute when Marek Heinz hit the post with a reflex stab at anopen goal after a save by Thomas Mandl fell into his path. Austria, apparently rattled, barely had a sniff at goal inthe rest of the half and Marek Jankulovski helped his Czech teammates forget the absence of their attacking duo of VladimirSmicer and Milan Baros by putting them ahead after 27 minutes.

Croatia’s victory was enough to clinch second place in thegroup, ahead of Belgium. Both sides finished with 16 points butCroatia have a better head-to-head record. ‘I did not expect such serious resistance from theBulgarians. It turned out that we can rise to the occasion, thatwe are a real team,’ Croatia coach Otto Baric said. ‘I think we now have good chances against any team in theplayoffs, but the only one I would like to avoid is Spain. ‘The hosts should have secured a more emphatic win, hittingthe woodwork twice in the second half, through Dimitar Berbatovand Prso. Bulgaria threatened Croatia’s goal on several occasions withstriker Dimitar Berbatov missing his best opportunity twominutes from time when his close-range header went just wide.

The visitors finished the game with a flourish when Reyesgrabbed two late goals to give them a comprehensive win. The Sevilla forward drilled in from the edge of the areaafter a superb pass from the impressive Valeron on 87 minutesand then tapped home from six metres after good work fromEtxeberria and defender Michel Salgado. But the Spanish, who have not missed out on a majortournament since the 1992 European championship finals, wereleft with a sour taste in their mouths knowing they will stillhave to fight it out for a place in Portugal.
