Independent Online – Dec 1, 2003
Eriksson has been offered a new contract until 2008 but is reluctant to commit himself. His current deal runs until the 2006 World Cup and the English Football Association fear he could return to club football after next summer. But Eriksson told the Sun newspaper on Monday: “It will be sorted before Euro 2004, but I haven’t decided whether it will be tomorrow or in three months time. “Its too early to say yes, no or whatever. We’ve time to talk about it. ”

The FA have publicly offered the Swede a deal that would keep him in the job until the 2008 European Championships, but he has been repeatedly linked with the manager’s job at Premiership leaders Chelsea.

As part of the contract, Hughes, previously part-time, will receive a lucrative testimonial at the Millennium Stadium if he guides Wales, currently top of their qualifying group, to the Euro 2004 finals. The package starts at £175,000 in the first year and finishes at £250,000 in 2006, with bonuses for qualifying for the Euro 2004 finals and the World Cup finals in 2006. But if Hughes leaves for a Premiership club, the Football Association of Wales will get £250,000, or £125,000 for a First Division club… They lead Group Nine by five points and are unbeaten in eight games. If they avoid defeat in next month’s friendly against Bosnia, it will represent the best sequence in Welsh history. David Collins, secretary general of the FAW, said: “I think I can say this guarantees we’ve got some great years ahead of us. We have given Mark a lot, but look at what he’s given us in return.

I’ve worked out roughly when I would not like to go. Not during the football season. I’d be furious to fade away and not know who won the league or the cup that season. So that means some time in June or July. After 11 June, now I think about it, because that’s my wedding anniversary. Don’t want to let her down. If it happens next year, then please God don’t let it be any time in June… If it happens next year, then please God don’t let it be any time in June. I’ve pencilled in all of June up to the final of the Euro Championships on 4 July. Looking further ahead, 2006 is going to be awkward as well, what with the next World Cup. Ditto for the years 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018. Death at any time in those next 12 years will be bloody inconvenient, what with World Cups and Euro Cups. I think there might just be a window of about three weeks at the end of July. Are you listening, God?No, hold on.
