Palios told BBC Radio 5 Live that he was convinced the Swede was still the ideal man to guide the national side, adding he believed exciting times lay ahead over the next few years – the factors which led to the Swede being offered a contract extension recently. “When you look around, Sven is the best man for the job,” Palios said. “If you want your coach to stay to deal with the 2006 competition [the World Cup] you’ve got to give him some job security and 2008 was a natural extension… Palios told BBC Radio 5 Live that he was convinced the Swede was still the ideal man to guide the national side, adding he believed exciting times lay ahead over the next few years – the factors which led to the Swede being offered a contract extension recently. “When you look around, Sven is the best man for the job,” Palios said. “If you want your coach to stay to deal with the 2006 competition [the World Cup] you’ve got to give him some job security and 2008 was a natural extension. There aren’t many coaches in the world that will sit here with the prospect of taking on an England team with all of its potential before it, ready to come to fruition in 2004 and 2006. “Palios insisted there remained a mutual respect between himself and Eriksson, despite the coach appearing to side with the players in his call for clarity and consistency from the FA on selection policy after the recent controversial decisions to drop Rio Ferdinand and Alan Smith for disciplinary reasons.

Libya and SA in bid to host 2008 Nations Cup
Independent Online – Dec 12, 2003
South Africa and Libya, as well as Ghana, are the only three nations to submit their bids before the deadline at the end of last month, the Confederation of African Football (Caf), soccer’s governing body in Africa, said in Cairo. All three countries have previously staged the biennial African championships. Ghana were hosts in 1963 and 1978 and once again in 2000, when they co-hosted the event with Nigeria at late notice after the tournament was taken away from Zimbabwe, whose preparations were poor… Libya and South Africa are among five countries seeking to host the first World Cup on African soil in 2010. Libya have a joint bid with Tunisia while Morocco and Egypt are the other two candidates hoping to secure the rights. Egypt won the race to host the 2006 African Nations Cup finals and Tunisia will be the venue for next month’s tournament.

Matthaeus takes Hungary reins
BBC News – Dec 14, 2003
The German legend will take over the reins on 1 January. “Matthaeus’ past as a player and his human qualities qualified him for the job,” said Imre Bozoky, the president of the Hungarian Football Federation. “Although this is a two-year deal, it can be extended depending on how Hungary does in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. ”

Matthaeus quit as Partizan Belgrade coach on Saturday after a year in charge citing “personal reasons”. Under his leadership Partizan qualified for the Champions League, finishing last in Group F, and are currently second in their domestic league. Last month, Matthaeus married a Serbian woman who lives in Budapest, the Hungarian capital, leading to media speculation that he could take the Hungary job.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Scotland | World Cup has gone…
BBC News – Dec 14, 2003
Although, to be fair I suppose either of them could have ended up with say Real Madrid, Juventus and AC Milan. Hey, I never said it was a guaranteed stroll in the park. But here is my master plan for the World Cup. Let’s make it the WORLD Cup. At the moment it is carved up continent by continent. Zones in Europe, Africa, Asia, North and Central America and the Caribbean, Oceania and South America… and if, as a by-product it helps Scotland reach the finals, well, that’s just the way it goes. It’s a shrinking world and bigger and more efficient jet engines are making it ever smaller. Botany Bay is as accessible as Wemyss Bay used to be. Well, maybe there’s a wee exaggeration in there but you catch my drift. And wouldn’t the folks of Mali and Cabo Verde and the players of Nicaragua and Uzbekistan just love to have a few pints of heavy and enjoy the Hampden experience.

New Lansdowne Road blueprint
BBC News – Dec 12, 2003
The IRFU Chief Executive Philip Browne presented the Republic’s Minister for Sport John Donoghue with the latest and final proposal to restructure the famous venue. Browne will deliver the findings from their consultants Ove Arup, who recommended a scaled-down version of the previous design which was for a 65,000 all-seater stadium. The latest plan is a 50,000-seater stadium for football and rugby. It would see the whole site rebuilt but the pitch still keeping its north-south position. The cost would be ?176 million, almost half of the original proposal. Both the IRFU and the FAI are hoping that the latest proposals meet with Government approval. It has been almost five years since the Republic’s Government first mooted the idea of a national stadium but hopes have been dashed on several occasions… At present Lansdowne Road can cater for a capacity of 47,000 for rugby internationals with both terraces in use for standing only. But, under Fifa legislation, it means that the Republic of Ireland can only seat 22,000 for football internationals with the temporary seating on the terracing now prohibited. A speedy reply would be welcomed by both sports, particularly as the FAI have already talked about moving to England to play their home matches for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers. Ireland, meanwhile, are due to stage two games in the 2007 Rugby World Cup which is being hosted by France.
