Eriksson rumours turn the tables on FA
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 27, 2003
But it is remarkable that for the first time in English football history, it is the FA, not the manager, living in fear of the sack. Eriksson is already the only England manager with a 100 per cent qualification record for major tournaments – Euro 2004 and last year’s World Cup – and in the next few years his young players should reach maturity. So why would he want to leave, unless the grass of club pitches is starting to look greener than those of international football? The FA, desperately clinging on to nurse for fear of finding something worse, have scarcely painted a picture of reliable employers in recent months. Eriksson was clearly frustrated by the threatened players’ strike before the final Euro 2004 qualifier in Turkey over the Rio Ferdinand affair and bewildered by the selection and de-selection of Alan Smith against Denmark last month. He has now, of course, barring a successful appeal, lost Ferdinand for Euro 2004… This is also a thoroughly modern sporting mantra, espoused by the England rugby team after some of their less impressive performances in the World Cup. Their magnificent triumph will raise expectations that the England football team can finally end 38 years of hurt in Portugal. They were, after all, dreaming of World Cup success last year when they led Brazil, having already beaten Argentina. David Beckham, who has been transformed by the captain’s armband, looks an even more complete footballer since his move to Real Madrid and in Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney, England have players who can score goals against the most watertight defences. The worry for Eriksson is whether Owen can get his hamstrings right by next summer and Rooney can get his head right. The maturing of Frank Lampard has also been a plus factor this year. His lack of pace can still make him look all at sea in international football at times but an outstanding season at Chelsea so far has sharpened both his reading of the game and his goalscoring instincts.

Northern Ireland have score to settle with England
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 28, 2003
His view, that every country wants to beat England but none more than Wales and Northern Ireland, is one I share. The outcome of matches against Austria and Azerbaijan might be predicted on the basis of their world rankings of 67th and 119th, and even the match against Poland, despite their relatively high placing of 25th, should be relatively easy for England. But when England play Northern Ireland, all statistics become meaningless because there is a lot more to play for than just the result. The draw could not have been better for Northern Ireland and, indeed, for British football.

The opening ceremony for soccer’s 2006 World Cup could be held at Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Munich will be the host of the first game, but Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and leading members of his Social Democrats want the celebration in Berlin — breaking the World Cup tradition of staging the two events in the same place. The World Cup organizing committee would prefer Berlin’s Olympic stadium, the site of the 1936 Summer Games and the 2006 World Cup final. A final decision will be made in March. Tennis

Deutsche Welle – Dec 27, 2003
Thousands of miles from home, a group of students from Cameroon studying at Berlin’s technical university have joined forces to bring some African flair to the institution’s amateur soccer league. Germany’s highly paid professional soccer stars may have to wait a couple of years for the possibility of a return clash with Cameroon at the World Cup in 2006 but for those lesser known stars of the amateur game in Germany, there are Lions prowling the parks of Berlin right now and rumor has it that they are as indomitable as their national idols. Called “Cameroon Power”, this 30-strong student team at Berlin’s Technical University drawn from engineering, information technology and business management courses is made up almost exclusively of players from the African nation. The only exception is goalkeeper Magnus, a Berliner born and bred. Cameroon flair in the Berlin league… Nevertheless, this Cameroon side has brought the hallmarks of such an invigorating approach to the game to Berlin and the rough and tumble of the engineering university league. Most of the time, they have to fit in soccer matches in-between studying and exams. Regardless of the strains of education, it is a common love for the game which has brought these students from the African continent together at the football ground in the Schöneberg district in central Berlin on this freezing winter’s morning. Successful combination of styles
Cameroon Power plays together with 60 other student teams in the university league and have already won the trophy for the best team twice. Coach Bertrand Njoume, who founded Cameroon Power together with some friends, puts the team’s success down to a mixture of their home-grown natural talent and the influence of their adopted home as the game gets under way. “Soccer players from Cameroon have a very good technique because they start very early,” Njoume said. “At home in Cameroon we don’t have any other opportunity to play anything else, so we start it as a game.

Gambia sack coach

A terse press release issued by the Gambian Football Association (GFA) said Ndong, who is also the technical director of Gambian football, has been relieved of his duties. Though the GFA gave no further details the move comes in the wake of massive disenchantment following the Scorpions’ departure from the 2006 African Nations and World Cup qualifiers. Gambia lost 3-0 to Liberia in Monrovia, crashing out of the combined 2006 qualifiers. That was after the Scorpions had raised fan expectations by beating Liberia 2-0 in the first leg. Hayatou backs qualifiers
BBC News – Dec 27, 2003
He also pointed out that Caf didn’t come up with the idea alone, but they were helped and backed by the representatives of the national associations throughout the continent. Hayatou was speaking in the Gambian capital, Banjul, as part of a tour of the region to bolster support for his re-election in next month’s Caf elections. The Cameroonian went on to claim that the duel qualifying system is being used against him by those trying to vote him out office, especially since no one has fully explained how the decision was taken. “But I have taken time to explain it in detail to the sports authorities in all the countries I have been to,” he explained.

FA cast eyes at Hitzfeld’s record
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 29, 2003
While the FA’s ambition in seeking to recruit the most respected coach in European football is admirable, many obstacles lie in their way. A principled man not given to breaking contracts, Hitzfeld’s Bayern deal expires in 2005 with talks on a one-year extension expected next spring. The feeling in Germany is that Hitzfeld wants to succeed Rudi Voller as Germany coach after the 2006 World Cup finals. Other problems for the FA include Hitzfeld’s poor grasp of English. The FA would also need to gauge domestic reaction to a German managing England. Hitzfeld’s nationality is less of an issue to Palios, who simply wants to recruit the best, while England’s players would be presented with the opportunity of working with an accomplished coach feted by their own club managers. The big wish within Soho Square is for Eriksson to commit himself to England long-term; if he signed the new deal on the eve of the squad departing for Euro 2004 it would give the players a huge fillip.

Daily Telegraph: FA cast eyes at Hitzfeld’s record
BBC News – Dec 29, 2003
As expected, Ferguson has leapt to the defence of his player saying that there was nothing nasty in the game and criticised the decision-making of Messias. It seems unlikely that the referee will be on Fergie’s Christmas card list next year. The Daily Telegraph reports that the Football Association are interested in Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld taking over as manager of the England team if Sven Goran Eriksson departs after 2004. Hitzfeld, one of the world’s top coaches, is described as “a diplomatic and devoutly religious man” but he has a poor grasp of English. However it adds that the feeling in Germany is that Hitzfeld wants to succeed Rudi Voller as German coach after the 2006 World Cup finals. The news that England rugby ace Jonny Wilkinson could miss the Six Nations through injury is also on many of the back pages. The Daily Mail says that the injury casts doubts over Wilkinson’s long-term future and the player will see a specialist on Wednesday… The Daily Telegraph reports that the Football Association are interested in Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld taking over as manager of the England team if Sven Goran Eriksson departs after 2004.
