Ferguson backs English to go far at Euro 2004
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 31, 2003
If England falter at Euro 2004, it will not be for lack of team spirit. The ‘Club England’ cliche is rooted in reality. England’s opening Group B game pits them against France, who, despite his respect for England, Ferguson rates as his tournament favourites, along with hosts Portugal. “France will be hard to beat,” Ferguson said. At 31, Zinedine Zidane, the world player of the year, will be determined to grace his last European finals in style.

Maybe Woodward is the new Isambard Kingdom Brunel. For what it’s worth, in my book he’s unquestionably sport’s man of the year. This is not said lightly – for while the England players were dredging their souls for a hundred minutes of effort, Woodward was stuck in a glass observation box. He made no tackles, scored no tries, kicked no points and assented politely to no refereeing decisions. He was a bystander, like you or me, yet it was he and his coaching staff who created the preconditions for victory. Even Wilkinson will tell you that his dropped goal took a couple of seconds to execute but six years to manufacture. Tied, and with less than a minute to go, the exhausted white XV contrived to move the ball into a position from which the star of the show could fire… Nice – but cold turkey on the page. Next year is all clairvoyance and cleverness – the food not cooked, the page not yet turned. This winter is different, because Woodward’s work spills over past New Year’s Day and into an uncharted year packed with mountainous assignments: Euro 2004, the Athens Olympics and the Ryder Cup. Wilkinson, Martin Johnson and Paula Radcliffe aside, the only serious rival for the title of inspiration of the year was Michael Watson, the former boxer who completed the London Marathon in six days, two hours, 27 minutes and 17 seconds. Given his terrible injuries, Watson gave us one of the great expositions of the human capacity to overcome and endure. But he will forgive us for placing his achievement in a separate category. A higher one, in many ways, and not strictly comparable to the construction by Woodward of a ruthless winning machine.

Move your body, stretch your mind: thousands of participants are…
EurofundingMag – Jan 1, 2004
The slogan (“Move your body, stretch your mind”) and logo will be highlighted at almost 200 events. “The European Year of Education through Sport will be taking place at an exceptional time for the youth of this continent”, said Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Education and Culture, at a press conference in Brussels. “Several major events, in particular Euro 2004 in Portugal and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Athens, will be placing Europe at centre stage as far as international sport is concerned. For this reason, the European Union has chosen 2004 to disseminate and explain sporting values to young people in no less than 28 countries. I look forward to seeing a proliferation, over the coming months, of initiatives promoting these values that contribute to the education of young people”. “Europe has always been at the heart of the world’s sporting action”, continued the Commissioner. “Almost two out of three of all the Olympic Games (summer and winter) have been held here, and one European in three regularly plays sport”… “Europe has always been at the heart of the world’s sporting action”, continued the Commissioner. “Almost two out of three of all the Olympic Games (summer and winter) have been held here, and one European in three regularly plays sport”. “I hope that 2004 will give a fresh boost to European sport in all its dimensions, not just in terms of high-level competition but also as an educational and social activity. And I hope that, this year, we will also see sport enshrined in the Constitutional Treaty”. The decision to name 2004 the “European Year of Education through Sport” was adopted by the European Parliament and the European Council early this year, on the basis of a Commission proposal. Several European sports stars are endorsing this European Year: great contemporary athletes such as French tennis champion Am?lie Mauresmo, and former champions such as Luxembourg skier Marc Girardelli. Some supporters of the Year attended the press conference, in particular Theresa Zabell, former world sailing champion and now an MEP, Rosa Mota, the Portuguese Olympic marathon champion in 1988, and Hungarian fencing legend Kulcsar Gy?zo.

– Contingency plans underway if Sven-Goran Eriksson leaves after Euro…
Calcutta Telegraph – Dec 30, 2003
Soho Square officials hope the Swede will sign a contract extension to 2008, but if he departs after Euro 2004, as many expect, the FA will set their sights on luring Hitzfeld. The distinguished German, who has guided Bayern and Borussia Dortmund to Champions League glory, is the preferred choice of Mark Palios, the FA?s new chief executive, whose strong personality is beginning to resonate around English football. Since taking over at the FA, Palios has talked about the need for a ?contingency plan? in case Eriksson leaves, which is standard practice in the business world where Palios has spent the last 20 years. Hitzfeld?s qualities and track record make him an obvious candidate. Hitzfeld, 54, is the manager considered the Continent?s best by no less an expert than Sir Alex Ferguson, who asked the German to coach a World XI against Manchester United at the Old Trafford?s manager?s testimonial… Palios is prepared for the FA to go foreign again, particularly with Eriksson having been such a positive influence. While the FA?s ambition in seeking to recruit the most respected coach in European football is admirable, many obstacles lie in their way. A principled man not given to breaking contracts, Hitzfeld?s Bayern deal expires in 2005 with talks on a one-year extension expected next spring. The feeling in Germany is that Hitzfeld wants to succeed Rudi V?ller as Germany coach after the 2006 World Cup finals. Other problems for the FA include Hitzfeld?s poor grasp of English. The FA would also need to gauge domestic reaction to a German managing England. Hitzfeld?s nationality is less of an issue to Palios, who simply wants to recruit the best, while England?s players would be presented with the opportunity of working with an accomplished coach feted by their own club managers.

Wright gets back on track
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 1, 2004
Wright, 26, who has two England caps, may be frustrated in his desire to make a late challenge for a place in the squad for Euro 2004, however. Nigel Martyn, another former England goalkeeper, has been impressive in Wright’s absence at Goodison, giving manager David Moyes the option of offloading Wright in the summer to raise funds for new players. Freddie Kanoute, the Tottenham striker, has… Nigel Martyn, another former England goalkeeper, has been impressive in Wright’s absence at Goodison, giving manager David Moyes the option of offloading Wright in the summer to raise funds for new players. SOCCER: Keane not keen on return
U.TV – Dec 30, 2003
Keane said: “When Brian took over the temptation was to go back because I knew things would be done properly. “But after getting medical advice I feel I have made the right decision. “Brian has come in and done a very good job but they always seemed to be playing catch-up after losing the first two games of the Euro 2004 qualifiers. “The best teams always qualify and Switzerland and Russia deserved to go through on merit. “Yeah, I watch some of the games and I think I could definitely do a job for the team. “Then again there are one or two players who I wouldn`t fancy playing with because of what happened before. “Because I feel okay in myself now it doesn`t mean I have forgotten what the surgeon told me about how important it is to rest my hip… “It`s about bloody time,“ he told Manchester United Magazine. “There have been bookings, sendings-off, not to mention the fines which are a killer. “That`s not to say it won`t happen again. Eventually all these things come together and you think `What`s the point?“`I was really frustrated with the referee at Chelsea (where United conceded a penalty). Okay I argued my case but compare the way I went about it to the penalty against Middlesbrough a few years ago. “Then I went chasing after the referee.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND V CROATIA FIXED ODDS PREVIEW
Readabet.com – Jan 1, 2004
The 20-year-old, who has scored 8 times for the Black Cats this term, should start the game alongside Tottenham?s Robbie Keane. The Croats might not have covered themselves in glory at Euro 2004, but they?ve regrouped well under coach Zlatko Kranjcar and also flying high in World qualification thanks to impressive victories over Hungary (3-0) and Sweden (1-0) as well as drawing 2-2 with Bulgaria most recently. Furthermore, the Croats have drawn 2-2 on their other two visits to Dublin, so opposing them is perhaps not the best way to go. Keane became Republic of Ireland?s all time leading goalscorer with a brace against Faroe Islands last time, and having looked particularly sharp in the Premiership of late, he looks an obvious contender to break the deadlock in what could prove to be a tight encounter. The evening?s other live encounter comes from Craven Cottage, where Australia take on Fellow World Cup hopefuls Norway.

Round-up: Spurs look to Reid
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 30, 2003
“Tottenham have reportedly lodged an offer of £2. 5 million plus performance-related bonuses for Reid, 21. However, Forest could hold out for a larger offer as Spurs are not the only club interested in the midfielder who has already scored 10 times this season. Reid’s career has flourished under Forest boss Paul Hart and he won his first full cap for the Republic in their recent friendly against Canada. Bolton manager Sam Allardyce is hoping to draft in striker Javi Moreno on loan from Atletico Madrid when the transfer window opens next month. Allardyce admits there is still some serious negotiating to be done before a deal can be concluded. Reports in Spain, meanwhile, say the clubs have agreed a six-month loan but that the player has yet to commit to a move… Ganea, a 30-year-old Romania international, passed a medical yesterday, and Wolves have until noon on Friday to complete his registration and make him eligible for the following day’s FA Cup third-round tie at Kidderminster. Ganea made a name for himself with VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, where he scored 34 goals in 106 appearances over four seasons before moving to Turkish League Bursaspor last summer. He has won 40 caps and scored 19 goals for Romania and played alongside Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu in all eight of his country’s group two qualifying games for Euro 2004. Ottmar Hitzfeld has pledged his future to Bayern Munich, after speculation that he could be a successor to Sven-Goran Eriksson as England coach. The German has been touted as a potential candidate to lead England beyond 2004 should Eriksson decide to move on after next summer’s tournament in Portugal. But Hitzfeld said: “I have received no offer. It does not specially interest me.

Premiership team of 2003
BBC News – Dec 31, 2003
Played in all but two of Chelsea’s Premiership matches this term after moving in a ?7m summer move. John Terry

His stock has risen throughout the year. A growing presence in the Chelsea team last season and a virtual ever-present so far this term, he has also broken into the England senior ranks and looks set to replace Rio Ferdinand in the Euro 2004 finals. Mikael Silvestre

Finally found his rightful place in the Manchester United set-up after seasons of slotting in, right, left and centre. Has missed only four Premiership games in 2003… Yet to fully establish himself as an England regular but his league displays suggest that honour is not far away. Jay-Jay Okocha

The most exciting individual in the Premiership. Never scared to try a trick and a genuine crowd pleaser, not least when he is scoring spectacular goals. Sam Allardyce’s best signing and unarguably one of the Premiership’s great entertainers. Damien Duff

Eye-catching displays helped Blackburn finish sixth in the Premiership and prompted a ?17m summer switch to Chelsea. Dazzling start to the season as Claudio Ranieri’s new-look side quickly gelled and has been conspicuous by his absence through injury in the final weeks of the year. Thierry Henry

Narrowly missed out on two European player of the year awards but walks into this team.

NEVILLE: GUNNERS ARE BIGGEST TITLE THREAT
4TheGame – Jan 1, 2004
” United’s 46-point tally from 19 matches is more than they had this time last season and then they went on to win the title with a five-point cushion from Arsenal. The stunning form of striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has contributed heavily to that success, but the role of United’s other Neville brother, Phil, in central midfield has largely gone unnoticed. Phil has been converted from a defender to a holding player in the middle of the park by Sir Alex Ferguson and brother Gary believes his younger sibling’s performances could yet guarantee his place in England’s Euro 2004 squad. “His form this season has been fantastic and you hope that form continues until the end of the season,” said Gary Neville. “I don’t think anyone could have imagined – not even Phil himself – he would be holding a place in central midfield for United. “I cross my fingers for him that he can get into the England squad. ” Neville also revealed he is keeping in close contact with another England team-mate, former United midfielder David Beckham who is now playing for Real Madrid… Phil has been converted from a defender to a holding player in the middle of the park by Sir Alex Ferguson and brother Gary believes his younger sibling’s performances could yet guarantee his place in England’s Euro 2004 squad. “His form this season has been fantastic and you hope that form continues until the end of the season,” said Gary Neville. “I don’t think anyone could have imagined – not even Phil himself – he would be holding a place in central midfield for United. “I cross my fingers for him that he can get into the England squad. ” Neville also revealed he is keeping in close contact with another England team-mate, former United midfielder David Beckham who is now playing for Real Madrid. “I speak to David probably four to five times a week. SOCCER: 2003 – the good and the bad
U.TV – UTV – Dec 30, 2003
Celtic`s UEFA Cup final appearance will live long in the memory of many north of the border, with the possible exception of those in the Govan area of Glasgow. The Hoops had not appeared in a European final since the European Cup in 1970 under Jock Stein. Martin O`Neill has always shied away from comparisons with the Parkhead legend, but will now always be equated with the boss of the Lisbon Lions. Celtic`s run in the competition was nothing short of supreme with Stuttgart and Liverpool made to look ordinary before Brazilian striker Derlei spoiled the dream with an extra-time winner in Spain. However, while Celtic were focusing their attention on Europe, Rangers were taking full advantage at home – but only just. Celtic were defeated in the CIS Insurance Cup final at Hampden Park before the Parkhead side celebrated their UEFA Cup win at Anfield with a calamitous Tennent`s Scottish Cup defeat at Inverness… Then, the national side began to show the fight and spirit which had been missing for so long under the German. The Faroe Islands were despatched with ease before a creditable performance in Dortmund saw Scotland lose 2-1 although Christian Dailly`s outburst during a televised interview with Vogts in the tunnel created television gold. But the Euro 2004 play-off against Holland underlined the good and the bad in the current national side. Starlets James McFadden and Darren Fletcher combined to superb effect for the only goal of the first leg at Hampden to leave fans dreaming of an unbelievable triumph over Dick Advocaat`s star-studded team. However, Ruud van Nistelrooy inspired the Dutch to a resounding 6-0 win in Amsterdam to allay any thoughts of a return to the good old days for a humbled Scotland. The Old Firm and Vogts may still be trading in optimism, but, elsewhere, financial problems have seen Dundee placed in administration and Dunfermline at one point unable to pay players. The cuts continue at Motherwell, Aberdeen, Hibernian and Hearts where a tenancy at Murrayfield is set for 2004.

United target Dutch striker Robben
CNN – Dec 31, 2003
Van Raay said the 19-year-old, who has scored 16 goals in 48 appearances for PSV and is already a full international, could hold talks with the English champions next week. “The chance is 50 percent,” Van Raay told the Daily Mirror when asked if Robben would leave the club during the January transfer window. United are already spearheaded by former PSV striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robben’s arrival could see the pair link-up in a dress rehearsal ahead of the Netherlands’ appearance at the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal. United, one of the few clubs with spending money available, have also been linked with Leeds striker Mark Viduka and Middlesbrough defender Gareth Southgate. Earlier this week United’s captain Roy Keane urged the club to strengthen their squad, especially in attack. “Please God nothing happend to Ruud van Nistelrooy because maybe we are not as strong up front as people think we are,” said Keane… United, one of the few clubs with spending money available, have also been linked with Leeds striker Mark Viduka and Middlesbrough defender Gareth Southgate. Owen close to comeback
BBC News – Dec 30, 2003
Owen has been out since 27 November, but a scan has shown significant improvement to his thigh injury. “Michael’s doing a lot better now and as soon as he can train he will,” said Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier. “We will see how he is before Yeovil but I would not totally rule out the possibility of him being involved at this stage. ”

Owen’s return would be a major boost to Liverpool who will be missing captain Steven Gerrard for the match at Huish Park on 4 January. Owen has had a stop-start campaign because of constant injury troubles. He damaged his shin against Arsenal on 7 October which also forced him to miss England’s crucial Euro 2004 qualifier in Turkey. This follows treatment for knee and shoulder complaints. Now Wright aims to win his first-team place back from Nigel Martyn and force his way into the reckoning for England’s Euro 2004 squad. Wright said: “It has been a frustrating year for me. I can’t wait to see the back of 2003. “My aim is to get back into the Everton first team, and I know that will be hard because Nigel is playing so well. “But I need to get back into the side to be playing the high standard needed to impress the England manager.
