Agent says Eriksson is not leaving England
Independent Online – Jan 17, 2004
Eriksson’s contract runs until 2006 – a World Cup year – although persistent rumours have suggested the England coach is set to quit the international scene for his preferred love of club football. Although he has been linked with English Premiership side Chelsea, talks to be held in February with the Football Association could see Eriksson sign a new four-year deal that would see him in charge until 2008. Eriksson’s agent, Athole Still, said for the moment there was “no reason to believe he will leave England before 2006”.

During a news conference on the Colorado campus, Bloom said hisagent will begin accepting corporate endorsements on Tuesday. Buthe also intends to return to the football field for his juniorseason next fall. “From the time I was 9 years old I’ve dreamed of winning a goldmedal for our country in the Winter Olympics,” Bloom said. “Unfortunately, at this time, I can no longer realisticallyattempt to follow this dream with the restrictions that exist undercurrent NCAA bylaws… They’ll have to kick me out. I look forward to being aBuff in the 2004 season. Bloom, who aims to compete in the 2006 Olympics, won two medalsat the 2003 world championships — gold in dual moguls and silver inindividual moguls. Bolton’s treachery unworthy of their great Cup tradition
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Jan 17, 2004
When Don Howe skied the ball, Banks deftly brought it down with a touch any Brazilian might have envied. It could be argued that Manchester United, when holders of the Cup, withdrew from the competition to contest a meaningless “club World Cup” in Brazil, but United were bullied into participating by the Government and the FA. They feared that, were United not to take part, England’s 2006 World Cup bid would be harmed. Well, they did take part but England didn’t get the World Cup anyway. United have been blamed for what they did ever since. There was no such excuse for Bolton.

Lennon leads tributes as Larsson prepares to exit
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Jan 18, 2004
“Unfortunately, that’s the downside of football. When somebody does go that’s it, they’ve gone and it’s like losing one of your pals. Whether you are pals off the field, away from football, or not, you are working every day together, travelling together, eating together. “Henrik has made a massive contribution — probably the biggest of any one individual. I don’t think anybody could argue with that. There’s a lot of speculation about where he is going and I can’t speculate on that. All I’ll say is that we will miss him when he’s gone, but we’re going to make sure if he does leave he’ll have something to go away with — in terms of silverware and in terms of making this as fruitful a season as he’s had… ” Lennon, like Larsson, has benefited from retiring from international football. A petition is underway in Sweden begging Larsson to return and play at Euro 2004, but he is unlikely to be swayed by emotion and will surely stick to his decision. Lennon, too, is of a mind to remain in an international retirement provoked by death threats made to him, despite the glamour group for World Cup 2006 that pits Northern Ireland against England and Wales and the appointment of a new manager, probably Jimmy Nicholl, currently No2 at Dunfermline. “I am quite enjoying the international break and I think my game has benefited from it.

Two more years for Cameroon coach
Independent Online – Jan 18, 2004
Cameroon are trying to make history by winning a third consecutive Nations Cup in Tunisia where the 2004 tournament will be played from January 24 to February 14. Cameroon’s football federation announced the extension of Schaefer’s contract late on Friday. His position was in doubt after Cameroon, the highest-rated African side in the Fifa rankings, were eliminated in the first round of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan. However, their success was overshadowed by the tragic loss of Marc-Vivien Foe who died of heart failure shortly after collapsing during the semi-final against Colombia.

St Clair gets T&T coaching job back
Jamaica Observer – Jan 18, 2004
The TTFF announced St Clair as the new technical director for the soca warriors, replacing St Lucian Stuart Charles-Fevrier, in the official launching for a World Cup berth called “Journey to Germany 2006”. Ron La Forest and goalkeeping coach Michael Maurice will assist St Clair, as Trinidad & Tobago begin preparations for the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers later this year. “The journey ahead is no walk in the park. There are no short-cuts to success. It is something we have to continually work hard at,” St Clair said.

Cup final threatened by FIFA centenary
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 17, 2004
Chelsea and Manchester United would be in a similarly precarious situation, with their French and Brazilian players having to juggle club and international commitments. Last night, a French FA spokesman said Santini was “85 percent certain” to call up his best squad for a match certain to be attended by the leading movers and shakers in world football and marketed by FIFA as a landmark occasion. “Jacques takes the view that we have to be responsible professionals,” said French FA spokesman Philippe Tournon. “Normally he would call up the best players, even for a friendly, but whether he would play them for the whole game if they are psychologically unprepared is another matter. Having said that, he can’t just select a reserve team. We know there are games all over Europe on the Saturday but everyone was advised months ago about this match… It could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back because the cup final is a highly prestigious game. “Soho Square officials are fully aware of the potential damage to their showpiece climax to the season and look set to get involved in the dispute if the big three progress to the last 16 of the competition next weekend. Four years ago, Manchester United failed to defend the FA Cup when they reluctantly competed in FIFA’s inaugural World Club Championship as a public relations exercise designed to boost England’s chances of staging the 2006 World Cup. “FIFA’s executive can introduce a special date and this is clearly how they are justifying this game,” said one FA source. “But this is not a recognised international date and you can be sure we are on the case.

Without doubt, Cameroon as the defending champions will do everything within their reach to carry the day. But it will not be easy for them this time around. The newcomers are eager to make an impact, just as the new players in all the teams will play their hearts out to impress football scouts from around the world. Nigeria, as the giant of the continent, might not want to be fooled for yet another time. My guess is that this cup must be returned to Nigeria because ten years ago, they won this cup on the same Tunisian soil. Ogwumike, Sunday E… They have formidable players in all departments. Kulwa Mpandwa, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

I think Cameroon will be the winner, because it is the giant of Africa. I also believe that Guinea will do well and for the 2006 World Cup. But the team has to play collectively. Whatever the case, one of the West African countries will take home the Cup of Nations. ibrahim bah harding, dorotea sweden

Zimbabwe is definitely going to winHerbert Mazikana, Harare Zimbabwe

I am sure that either Cameroon or Nigeria will win this cup. They are old hands and the newcomers lack the experience to shake them.

He would also be provided with a 3-bedroom house, private security, a car and other facilities to enhance his work. The agreement was apparently struck with FIFA player agent Lucido Ribeiro by Minister Rashid Bawa and GFA boss Ben Koufie early this year somewhere in the deserts of Algeria. Better still Afrique Football Magazine, owned by Ribeiro’s company would source for sponsorship for both teams and also arrange international matches as well as feature them in the magazine. EXPOSE It was good news-well that was before the media discovered that Senor Barreto had allegedly padded his CV to convince Bawa and Koufie that he was their man for the job. An expose in the Soccer Express, a high flying sports paper brought out the conflicting and disturbing details about the man and his CV making both Bawa and Koufie the butt of ridicule. Apart from blowing the whistle on the coach’s CV, the paper also presented a blow-by-blow repudiation on his claims. On his assertion that he served as an assistant coach of Locomotiv Moscow, the paper says that is false… “It is a new direction of coaching. Carlos Queiroz, former coach of South Africa and assistant coach at Manchester United and Jorge Moremo of Porto are all fitness instructors. Isn’t it interesting that all the coaches he mentioned happened to be Portuguese? ET TU RASHID BAWA & KOUFIE So how did Rashid Bawa and Ben Koufie contrive to miss all these that is if the Soccer Express story is true? Did they fail in doing a detailed background check on this guy? Or maybe desperation to get a coach as the world cup and Olympic qualifiers draw closer made them clumsy? To be fair I wouldn’t want to pass any judgement yet until they give us an official explanation. Alex Ribeiro’s explanation would not pass the first blush of any serious test. I pray to God both Bawa and Koufie have a logical explanation to offer for this potential mess they have created. The consequences would not be pleasant because I can feel the noose already tightening around their necks. By Paa Kwesi Plange (Gye Nyame Concord) paakwesip@yahoo.
