Nations Cup winners to qualify
BBC News – Jan 21, 2004
The Caf executive committee took the decision to bring the Nations Cup in line with the World Cup and the European Championships, both of which have brought in the new ruling. This rule has already created some dissatisfaction in global football, with world champions Brazil having expressed their profound unhappiness at having to qualify for the 2006 World Cup. Another decision taken at the meeting of the 12-man executive committee in Tunis on Tuesday was to allow countries at future Nations Cups to have squads of 23, rather than 22, players. Reacting to the requests of many countries clamouring for this change, Caf has ruled that all future squads must list a total of three goalkeepers. The executive committee also discussed the venue of the 2008 event where five countries have shown an interest in staging the competition. Only South Africa, Ghana and Libya managed to submit bids before the deadline of 23 November 2003, but proposals from Ivory Coast as well as a joint bid between Gabon and Equatorial Guinea have also been accepted.

Surveyor Lawrence Harvey, 30, of Burwell, near the border between Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, is able to play for the Turks and Caicos Islands because he worked in the British Crown Colony for two years. Mr Harvey plays for Alcia Athletic in the Halls of Cambridge Sunday League. He said he was amazed to find out that he had been selected for two World Cup 2006 qualifiers against Haiti on 18 and 21 February. “Football has only been played on the island for seven years and it hasn’t developed beyond the massive ex-pat community,” he said. “They gave me a call and asked if I would be interested in playing – I still can’t believe it’s happening. It will be a truly amazing experience, regardless of what happens. ”

Mr Harvey, a centre-half, is due to fly out to the Caribbean two days before the game.

Collective effort”A new coach is not enough to make big changes,” he said. “We must work together with the club coaches and the players. Everyone has to give their best for Hungarian football. We would like to take part in the 2006 World Cup, but it’s only a dream. Players’ burden”The players must understand that it is their job to give their best. I played 150 games for Germany, but it did not make any difference whether I was playing against a small country or in the World Cup final – I loved playing for my country and I’ll ask the same of my players to make the fans happy. ”
Unknown quantitiesAt the moment, Matthäus admits that his knowledge of Hungarian football is limited.

International pedigreeWith 752 appearances for FK Partizan and 28 caps for Yugoslavia behind him, the 53-year-old trainer has helped the island nation pursue a policy of youth development and, as his side prepare for the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Vukotic is feeling optimistic. ‘Catching up’”This country is slowly catching up with the more developed European nations,” he told uefa. “Twenty years ago the Cypriot league relied heavily on foreign players, but now they have developed club football schools and have plenty of young talent coming through. People love football and slowly results have picked up… Miracle requiredHowever, the coach is undaunted, saying: “You have to be an optimist working in sports. I am waiting for a miracle. Ideally, we would finish in second place in our World Cup qualifying group. But let’s be realistic: it would be a great achievement if we could finish third. ”
Cypriot mentalityVukotic’s tongue may have been in his cheek, but he admitted that the expectations of Cypriot supporters have been something of a problem since he was appointed coach in 2002. “The mentality is typical of a southern European team,” he said. “Everyone wants only victories and miracles.

Battle for 2010 World Cup bid at Nations Cup
Independent Online – Jan 21, 2004
“Fifa will name the winning country in the year that coincides with the 10th anniversary of full democracy in my country,” he said. “I have no doubt that South Africa is the best bet for the African continent. ”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is desperately trying to cut a neutral path. “For us at CAf, the most important thing is that the World Cup in 2010 will take place in Africa for the very first time,” said CAF spokesperson Sulaiman Habuba. “It is therefore now left to the individual countries to convince the 24-member Fifa executive committee that they have what it takes to play host to the world. ”

Morocco tried and failed to host the 1994, 1998 and 2006 World Cup while South Africa, who lost their 2006 bid by one vote to Germany, can boast successful organisation of the rugby and cricket World Cups in 1995 and 2003 respectively. “It would add weight to the joint Tunisia-Libya bid for the 2010 World Cup. We can show that Tunisia is already capable of organising a continental competition.

And the second goal by Nat Lofthouse, so long the hero of the Wanderers as their fearless center forward, came from a manifest foul on the United keeper, Harry Gregg. Some might argue that Manchester United failed to play in the tournament at all when actually the holders, but that was quite a different cup of tea. United were bullied and browbeaten by the government, the ineffable then-sports minister Tony Banks to the fore, and the FA, scared silly that if United didn’t play in that fatuous abomination, the so-called Club World Championship in Brazil, England wouldn’t get the 2006 World Cup. Well, they didn’t anyway. WHEN SVEN-Goran Eriksson failed even to attend last week’s fixture making conference in Cardiff for the ensuing World Cup qualifiers, there were those who saw it as dereliction of duty. 2 Tore Grip instead and graciously kept in touch by telephone, which makes you wonder just how keen he is to continue coaching England after the ensuing European Championships… The opinions expressed here are solely those of the writer. BOULDER, Colo. — (AP) Jeremy Bloom put the pressure back on the NCAA. The two-sport athlete said Monday he intends to play football next fall – and accept skiing endorsements in defiance of the NCAA. Bloom said the move is intended to force the NCAA’s hand, requiring the organization to either change its position or prevent him from playing football. The NCAA has ruled that Bloom cannot accept skiing endorsements and also play football. Bloom maintains such money is necessary to fund his freestyle ski career. For the last two seasons, Bloom has been a wide receiver and kick returner at the University of Colorado while also competing in moguls skiing on the World Cup circuit – at his own expense… The NCAA has ruled that Bloom cannot accept skiing endorsements and also play football. Bloom maintains such money is necessary to fund his freestyle ski career. For the last two seasons, Bloom has been a wide receiver and kick returner at the University of Colorado while also competing in moguls skiing on the World Cup circuit – at his own expense. “From the time I was 9 years old, I’ve dreamed of winning a gold medal for our country in the Winter Olympics,” Bloom said. “Unfortunately, at this time, I can no longer realistically attempt to follow this dream with the restrictions that exist under current NCAA bylaws. ”

Bloom has appealed the NCAA ruling, but a state district judge ruled against him in August 2002. “The NCAA remains open to finding a way to resolve this issue,” NCAA spokesman Jeff Howard said Monday.

Terps Are The Area’s Big-Time Ticket
Washington Post – Jan 20, 2004
Maryland’s combined football and basketball record is 109-33. And even with this callow group of mostly freshmen and sophomores, Gary Williams has managed to beat one No. 1 team already this season, and now gets a crack at another one in Duke. By my math the only Big-Time Division I school with better numbers is Oklahoma (119-24)… But Adu has yet to compete against men. Adu’s big “Wow Factor” came in under-17 competition. For him to do what Michelle Wie did, he’d have to score goals in the World Cup in 2006, when he’s 16. What Wie did is astonishing, going to the tips and shooting 68 in a PGA tournament against an array of the best golfers in the world. It would be astonishing if a 14-year-old boy had gone to the tips and shot two-under in a PGA tournament. It’s more astonishing that a girl did it. Wie was even-par after two rounds, same as Jim Furyk and Ben Curtis, who last year won a couple of little things I like to call the U.
