Colombia, who qualified for the World Cup finals in 1990, 1994 and 1998 but missed out on South Korea and Japan in 2002, are bottom of the South American qualifying group. They have lost at home to Venezuela and Brazil, been thrashed 4-0 in Bolivia and drawn 1-1 at home to Argentina. The blame fell on former coach Francisco Maturana, who became the first victim of the 2006 World Cup qualifiers when the FCF sacked him late last year. Maturana, a former dentist whose ?touch-touch? coaching style relied on finesse, was largely credited with putting Colombian soccer on the map in the 1990s. He steered his team to two World Cups in two stints as coach and is now in charge of Argentine provincial club Colon.

Renovations are also being planned to the stadium at Suez City. ‘Some of these stadiums will be ready by the end of this year and others ready by late 2005,’ said Youssef El Dashoury, president of the Egyptian Football Association. Egypt will be hosting the Nations Cup for the fourth time, a new record for African football. No dates have yet to be decided for the 2006 tournament but it is expected to again be held in January and February as the World Cup finals will be played in Germany later the same year. For the first time, the Nations Cup holder will not automatically qualify for the 2006 finals but have to go through the qualifying campaign, replicating changes made to the World Cup format by FIFA. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have also announced that the squad size for the 2006 finals will be extended to 23 players, including three goalkeepers. The host for the 2008 Nations Cup finals is to be decided by CAF later this year.

Stadium looks to host Irish
BBC News – Feb 1, 2004
“It’s reasonably accessible by ferry and air. ”

The move would mean that Ireland would play their home rugby matches in Cardiff in the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons – including their “home” game against Wales. The Irish football authorities have confirmed they are looking for a stadium to stage their home 2006 World Cup qualifiers against France, Switzerland, Israel, Cyprus and Faroe Islands.

Even Madiba magic won’t help hopeless Bafana
Independent Online – Feb 3, 2004
But Morocco’s young Atlas Lions have been fired up at this Nations Cup and they will have revenge high on their agenda. Victory will enable Morocco to top the group, but for the winner there is also bragging rights when the 2010 World Cup announcement is made in Switzerland on May 15. Bafana’s players were hauling out the old “anything can happen in football” and “the ball is round” lines, while coach Styles Phumo was providing the old “it’s now or never” one, but they’re not saying it with much conviction. Bafana’s sole training session on Monday certainly didn’t suggest there was much fight left among the South African players. It may have been the second-last session before the game, but there was nothing special about the training session, it was the normal old 11-a-side played with as much enthusiasm as a Sunday afternoon kickabout. The technical staff of assistant coach Roger de Sa, goalkeeper coach Cyprian Maimane and technical director Marcos Falopa joined in. So listless were proceedings that 50-something Falopa on the left wing was in fact one of the better players on the day, and that’s not even a joke… To compound matters, Bafana’s injury list is growing with Tony Coyle joining Benson Mhlongo and Emille Baron on the sidelines for the rest of the tournament. The South African coach has said he will make changes to the side that lost 4-0 to Nigeria on Saturday and it looks as if players like Stanton Fredericks, Jabu Pule, Teboho Mokoena, Neil Winstanley and Nkosinathi Nhleko could play as well as Andre Arendse. Should Bafana go out, there’s at least the consolation that Burkina Faso and the Democratic Republic of Congo, two countries they will face in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, have made first round exits in Tunisia too.

Okon may miss Socceroo squad
The Age – Feb 1, 2004
It’s as simple as that. ” Although fully fit, Okon has fallen from favour at the Italian club he joined from Leeds United at the beginning of this season. He signed for Vicenza to ensure he played European first team football and remained a key part of Farina’s plans for the 2006 World Cup campaign. Farina will not officially name his squad for the Venezuela match until after next weekend but Okon may find another way to win back his place if several key players are injured or become unavailable for the South American game. “The cupboard is not bare. “FRANK FARINA Liverpool’s Harry Kewell, Osasuna’s John Aloisi, Josip Skoko at Turkish club Genclerbirligi, and Italian duo Mark Bresciano at Parma and Vince Grella at Empoli, will join Mark Viduka in struggling to make the midweek game bookended by a busy domestic European schedule. Farina is likely to promote at least one member of the under-23 Olympic squad that qualified for Athens on Friday night.

Blatter Makes Case for African Minnows
This Day – This Day (subscription) – Feb 3, 2004
Nearly half of the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) 52 members were eliminated from the race after the conclusion of last year’s preliminary round. The new format adopted by the CAF executive committee provoked outrage from Africa’s smaller nations, who criticised the system as being harmful to their football development. “They (the smaller countries) have to play because they cannot wait for the next (qualifying) opportunity,” said Blatter
“The African confederation should organise competitions within their six zones. ”
Blatter proposed that they (FIFA) think of organising a tournament involving the lesser African, Asian and European teams.

Newcastle hit by Dyer injury – Feb 3, 2004
It is a big disappointment to see another two points disappear like that. “Kevin Phillips has been fined £2,000 by the Football Association and warned about his future conduct over an incident in which the Southampton striker trod on Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann’s foot when the teams met on Dec 29. Phillips, who admitted the misconduct charge but requested a personal hearing, clashed with Lehmann in the final seconds and the Arsenal goalkeeper reacted by throwing the ball at the back of the former England striker’s head after the final whistle. Lehmann had previously been fined £10,000 for his actions. Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos will miss next week’s Champions League return against Bayern Munich after UEFA banned the defender for two matches. The Brazil international tangled with Bayern’s Martin Demichelis during last week’s 1-1 draw in Munich following a rough tackle and retaliated by hitting him in the face… UEFA opened an investigation after seeing television footage of the incident. Roberto Carlos has until Thursday to appeal. Wales are lining up Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground to play one of their 2006 World Cup qualifying warm-up games next season. Fans in North Wales have had to travel to Cardiff since the Racecourse Ground failed to meet the all-seat requirements for competitive games. David Dunn, Birmingham City’s £5. 5million midfielder,.

They replace injured Mark Jones, Kevin Morgan, Huw Bennett and Chris Wyatt. Michael Owen returns to the 31-man party after missing the World Cup because of injury while Colin Charvis retains the captaincy. “We are happy with the form of all the players and the more competition we have the better it is,” said Hansen. Hansen added: “The process has been made more difficult than normal due to the number of players who have been in good form throughout the regions. “But rather than seeing this as a negative we look at that as a positive.

The eldest of them, 15 years old at most, ladles out powdered breakfast cereal from large aluminum bowls and pours yellow tea into plastic cups as the novices rock backward and forward and continue to chant. No one moves to eat yet. A young monk pours me a cup of the tea, I assume made from yak butter. It is really not to my taste, but I sip it with good grace. The tiny companion next to me, with his shaved head and enormous dark eyes, gives me a shy smile as he continues the complex mantra that is the morning’s task. I’m amazed at the focus and discipline in the room – no adults are present but me. As an ex-schoolteacher I find it baffling that 50 boys left alone in a room aren’t by now staging a full-scale riot, yelling, fighting, throwing missiles and food across the room, and making an unholy row.

If I want to play, 18 that is 3 boards left of the third arrow because like I said the arrows and the dots cosmetically is the same, it is only 5 boards a spot. So that is how you know exactly your lay down for your ball and where you want to play on your shot, give it a try and I guarantee you that you will have a lot more fun and shoot a lot more higher games. ‘I am so fond of him (Martin Clunes) and look forward to working with him because he makes the whole thing so much fun. Needless to say, in real life, he is nothing at all like the Doc. You have a break and do other things, then you come back refreshed to a bunch of people who have really, over the years, become like family. There has always Wholesale Jerseys been a feeling that the Doc’s the one with all the problems and that, if she could only change him, everything would be fine. But when they go to couples counselling, it turns out that she has a few problems of her own, stemming from her childhood. She has to look at what she needs to change about herself. And that’s a new thing.Every coach gets excited about seeing a freshman become a junior, looking back on when he was a freshman when he cheap football jerseys couldn’t do half the things you wanted him to do. And then over the course of a couple years of practice and work and commitment, you see him evolve into a really good football player and you know that you had some effect on that. I mean, that’s awesome. But it pales in comparison to Cheap Jerseys watching a kid who was in jail and in a gang, get out of a gang, drop the jail mentality and go to college. That’s a whole different level of Cheap NFL Jerseys China mentoring and coaching and teaching, and that’s also a more lifelong, profound effect that you can have on a human being. I miss that. And one day I hope to return to it. But that cant take precedent over my own children and my own family anymore. If you watch sports highlights regularly, you’ve probably seen it happen just this week. A field goal kicker misses the chip shot with no time on the clock; the NBA Wholesale NFL Jerseys guard who had no problem scoring his first 30 points of the game can’t drain his last two standing at the free throw line down by one with two seconds on the clock. In contrast to Newcastle’s disconsolate media conference, the Panthers were upbeat after consolidating their hold on seventh position. Nonetheless, Moylan conceded his team will face tougher tests in the weeks ahead. “In the back end of the year, in the crunch games, you can’t give a side that many opportunities,” he NFL Jerseys Cheap said.
