Egypt look at Wilkinson
BBC News – Feb 27, 2004
Mohamed El Siagy said that the former England caretaker manager was his preferred candidate out of the four coaches that the EFA has contacted about the vacant post so far. “I want Howard Wilkinson as our new coach,” the general secretary told BBC Sport. “In my opinion, we need a good coach to plan, to make a plan for our strategy and he can work with this strategy. ”

EFA general secretary Mohamed El Siagy

“Wilkinson worked with England’s Football Association, with the strategy of English football and not only does he know a lot, but he also has very good experience… With Egypt hosting the 2006 Nations Cup, there is pressure on the EFA to find the right man. El Siagy added that the new coach will have a contract that will expire shortly after Egypt 2006, yet this deal will extend should the Pharaohs reach that year’s World Cup in Germany. “If the new coach reaches the 2006 World Cup, he can continue his contract for two more years,” the Egyptian said. Egyptian officials began searching for a new coach after previous boss Mohsen Salah resigned after Tunisia 2004, where the four-time Nations Cup winners had failed to get past the group stages.

Senegal still keen on Stephan
BBC News – Feb 26, 2004
According to a FSF spokesman, the Frenchman remains Senegal’s national coach and “there are no indications of the FA deciding otherwise”. On Wednesday, Stephan presented his Nations Cup report to the FSF before travelling to France for a holiday. The French coach took charge of Senegal in January 2003 and his contract runs until 2006. Yet he was criticised after the Lions’ lacklustre quarter-final exit to Tunisia in the Nations Cup and there was increasing speculation that Stephan could be sacked… Le Quotidien says Stephan could claim compensation for the remaining two years if he is pushed out. Before Tunisia 2004, Senegal were hotly-fancied to reach the final, especially since they lost the 2002 final in Mali with an emerging side. Stephan is now expected to see the Teranga Lions through the qualifying rounds of the 2006 World Cup and Nations Cup games. Senegal have been drawn in Group 1 alongside Mali, Zambia, Togo, Liberia and Congo.

Warriors coach to stay on
BBC News – Feb 26, 2004
“I will carry on and lead the Warriors in the qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup and Nations Cup,” Marimo told BBC Sport. After Zimbabwe’s 2-1 win over Algeria in their final group game at Tunisia 2004, Marimo said he was under too much pressure. Although the Warriors made a creditable debut Nations Cup appearance, many fans were expecting the team to progress further in the tournament. Marimo was offended by their comments, but since the team returned from Tunisia, backing for Marimo has grown. Sports minister Aeneas Chigwedere asked him to continue, and the majority of fans have been in support of Marimo… Sports minister Aeneas Chigwedere asked him to continue, and the majority of fans have been in support of Marimo. “I’m prepared to listen to coaches, journalists and supporters who know football, provided they talk constructively, but not criticism which is unfounded,” Marimo said. Marimo believes that the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) should appoint a technical director in charge of a programme for coaches nationwide. “We need a very highly-qualified person from Europe or Brazil who can teach the latest training methods to our club coaches throughout the country and to myself,” he explained. “I would even be happy to work under that person with the Warriors, but only if they were suitably qualified. ”

Zifa made attempts to bring in former South Africa coach Clive Barker as technical advisor for the Nations Cup, but the deal, which Marimo opposed, fell through.

?We have done very well in the past few years and are capable of beating top teams,? said centre-forward Jyoti Sunita Kullu after the team won the Asia Cup here to qualify for the world event. Kullu is from a group of tribal players who hail from two far-flung pockets of the country who have made a mark for themselves in the international arena. ?We?ve been brought up in an environment of hockey and can only think of winning,? said Kullu, who hails from Sundargarh in the eastern Indian state of Orissa, as do her teammates Binita Toppo and Subhadra Pradhan. They, along with Kanti Baa, Adline Kerketta, Masira Surin and Sumrai Tete, who come from the eastern state of Jharkhand carved out from Bihar, complete a line-up of tribal women excelling in women?s hockey… ?We?ve been brought up in an environment of hockey and can only think of winning,? said Kullu, who hails from Sundargarh in the eastern Indian state of Orissa, as do her teammates Binita Toppo and Subhadra Pradhan. They, along with Kanti Baa, Adline Kerketta, Masira Surin and Sumrai Tete, who come from the eastern state of Jharkhand carved out from Bihar, complete a line-up of tribal women excelling in women?s hockey. Sundargarh has also thrown up a number of players in the men?s team, including star defender Dilip Tirkey, and is fast turning out to be a nursery for the game, as Bombay once was for cricket and Calcutta for football. Their initiation comes fairly early and competitive spirit is added as they play in inter-village matches before being picked by talent scouts from various institutions or government schemes. By winning the Asia Cup in New Delhi, they may have qualified for the World Cup, but the women from Sundargarh won?t forget the first trophy they played for ? the ?Kakuda? Cup. Kakuda in their native language means chicken, the prize that was often at stake when one village took on another in thrilling contests which had supporters cheering wildly. If the players from Sundargarh had to make do with second-hand sticks, worn out balls and uneven ground, things were not much different for the bunch from Jharkhand.

Oliver Kahn faces harsh new realities
Expatica – Feb 25, 2004
he has criticised the team on several occasions over the past years, that is not forgotten,” said Matthaeus. That is Kahn’s main dilemma and has always made him controversial. Kahn is arguably the most dedicated professional in German football, a heavy burden in itself as it prompted fans to pelt him with bananas in a mock reference to his bodybuilder figure. In addition, his outbursts have not won him additional friends. His actions were not only against opponents (he almost once bit off an ear of Dortmund’s Heiko Herrlich in a Mike Tyson-like incident)) but also against team-mates, who under ideal circumstances should be as committed as the man himself. Players and officials tried to limit the damage by insisting that Kahn was not to blame. “He was the hero so many times in the past,” insisted coach Ottmar Hitzfeld… But in 2004 alone, Kahn did not look good in the 2-1 cup defeat against second division Alemania Aachen. Last week, he misjudged a cross in the friendly with Croatia, which resulted in a temporary equalizer before Germany luckily won 2-1. In that game, Kahn, who says he wants to continue playing for his country until after the 2006 World Cup in Germany, was plagued by back problems which even prompted him to sit out last Saturday’s league match with SV Hamburg. He was back on Tuesday with the help of 15 pain-killing injections, but insisted that the injury was not the reason for his grave error. But Kahn admitted that things weren’t going well right now. “I must ask myself what is wrong. I believe that I am in the best shape ever.

Vogts issues rallying call to long-suffering supporters

uk, he said: “I hope the fans will back me and the team in our aim to reach the 2006 World Cup, and I would like to thank those who have sent me messages of support in the last few days. “As a final comment on Cardiff, what I cannot understand is people asking why I did not select my best team — the straightforward answer is that I could not do so because of the number of injuries, particularly to defenders. Scotland’s resources are limited, notably in defence, but there is time to put the problems right and get the team into shape for the World Cup campaign. ” Vogts defended his decision to experiment heavily in the previous friendlies, even though he has won just twice out of those 13 matches — against Canada and a Hong Kong XI.

He was lambasted for relying on ageing Europe-based professionals and failing to spot emerging talent in Cameroon, one of Africa’s footballing superpowers. The former Karlsruhe coach said he wants to watch as many domestic matches as possible. He also denied reports he had been in contact with Egypt’s football authorities about the national coach’s vacant position there. “As you can see, I am here in Yaounde, not in Egypt as has been reported,” he said. “I have never had any contact with the Egyptians. “In fact, I first heard about my supposed imminent departure to Egypt only when one of you called me on the phone to ask if it was true I was leaving. ”

China’s first 2006 World Cup qualifying match against Kuwait and had to watch
the game on the stand. The 34-year-old Hao Haidong snatched his starting position upfront and scored
the lone goal to help China win 1-0. “The competition inside the squad was very fierce,” Yang said. “I had already
knew that I could not play days before the match. The head coach had his own
plan.

Kids these days seem to prefer staying indoors, playing video games or watching TV. Things were different in the sixties, when I grew up. We spent as much time as we could out of the house, even during less than perfect weather. We ran, we played outdoor games, we climbed trees, we chased butterflies, and we built forts. Sometimes we walked to nearby lakes and spent the day fishing, swimming, and paddling a boat.About ten years ago, I was trying to figure out the most effective eating system for and running.
