“I have noted the various newspaper reports in the South African press relating to my purported change in support for South Africa’s 2010 bid and wish to respond as follows,” Beckenbauer said. “The main matter, which was raised in the discussion with the media in Dubai, was the impact of rotation on European football. A full rotation would result in Europe hosting a World Cup only once in 24 years. “This I repeatedly emphasised was something that I cannot support because Europe contributes almost 80 percent to the world economy of football. “I will continue to argue for what I believe in and respect the positions of Fifa members and it’s affiliated football associations from other continents to argue their case. ”
Beckenbauer also came out in support of South Africa, and reiterated his feelings that it is the country most capable of hosting the event. He also suggested that those trying to disparage him may have ulterior motives… “My conviction on the state of readiness of South Africa to host has not changed and anyone suggesting that I have changed my view on this matter is devious and deliberately being mischievous. “I have had a meeting with former president Nelson Mandela, South African government officials and leaders from the South African business community. “I have inspected the infrastructure in South Africa and also developed friendships with the South African football community dur ing the 2006 bid. “I am covinced South Africa is ready to host the World Cup. ” – DDC

Jamaica is best location for CFU marketing division, says Warner
Jamaica Observer – Mar 7, 2004
You should not be Burrell’s copy. You should be able to develop your own strategies. ”
Warner told the football luminaries present that he was convinced Jamaica was the best location to host the CFU marketing division, hence the decision to open the marketing arm of the CFU here. He was unapologetic for selecting Burrell – the former head of the JFF, who was defeated by Boxhill last November following a bitter election – to head the marketing arm. “I make no apologies for putting Captain Burrell as head. If anyone can sell an idea it is Captain Burrell,” Warner said. The CFU marketing division will seek to market Caribbean football and maximise the earning potential of the sport in the region… If anyone can sell an idea it is Captain Burrell,” Warner said. The CFU marketing division will seek to market Caribbean football and maximise the earning potential of the sport in the region. According to Warner, the CFU had sold Caribbean television rights for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers for a total of US$900,000, but was looking to sell the rights for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers at a higher price of US$1. 2 million, when the CFU holds its congress in Paris. Some of the profit garnered from the deal, Warner said, would be used to form an under-14 tournament throughout the Caribbean. Under the terms of the sale agreement, individual countries would still be allowed to sell domestic television rights to local media houses, but the collective rights would be sold en bloc. Minister of Sport, Portia Simpson Miller, lauded the move to open the CFU marketing division in Kingston and hailed the vast earning potential of sports.

Klinsmann: the rise…and the falls
The Observer – Mar 7, 2004
But, as in so many rekindled romances, it wasn’t quite the same. The magic had gone. And after captaining Germany in the 1998 World Cup, he retired from European football. In the interim he does not appear to have gained a pound. The only sign of ageing is what he has lost: the hair in a small bald patch around his crown, and the explosive speed over those first crucial few yards. That elaborate but strangely graceful running style was not something he was born with. How he developed it explains a lot about Klinsmann, and perhaps how he gained his name for diving… ‘I’m not the kind of person who looks back,’ he told me. ‘I try to stay in the present. ‘ Made up of part-time employment as a technical advisor with LA Galaxy (an American professional ‘soccer’ team), a partnership in a football consultancy, charity work, ambassadorial duties for Germany’s world cup in 2006, and a sponsorship deal with Mastercard, Klinsmann’s present was blameless but not somewhere I was keen to stay. I wanted to know what he really thought of Sugar. The former Spurs chairman went into an infantile strop when Klinsmann left Spurs to go to Bayern, throwing the player’s shirt on the floor at a press conference, and claiming he wouldn’t use it to wash his car. ‘No, I admired him,’ Klinsmann replied. ‘When people were asking for more expensive or exciting players he stayed focused on the development of the club.

Sky’s the limit as Beckham scores new endorsement deal with Adidas
Irish Independent – Mar 5, 2004
The extension of an existing deal due to expire this year means that the England captain will continue to wear the Predator boots he first put on his feet at the age of seven. It will also allow a man as celebrated for his hairstyle and fashion choices as his football to indulge his creative side. He will be advising on the design of shoes and clothing to bear a logo of his trademark free kick. The products will be unveiled later this year… 5m over four years. Beckham’s celebrity and global recognition have moved on massively since 2000, when he earned the England captaincy. He has since competed in his second World Cup, which raised his already hysterical standing in Japan and allowed him publicly to exorcise his ghosts of France ’98 by scoring the winning penalty against Argentina. Last summer, he moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid, arguably the most glamorous club in Europe, in the highest-profile transfer in football history. He is likely to have doubled his money by staying with Adidas, which he joined in 1996, rather than defecting to Nike, the sporting goods manufacturer trying to leapfrog its rival in the football sector. Beckham is in good company. Adidas also sponsors Zinedine Zidane and Raul, his Real Madrid team-mates.

The search is on for Bafana’s coach
Independent Online – Mar 7, 2004
If the calibre of coaches interested in coaching them is anything to go by, the national squad is still highly regarded despite their fall from grace in recent years. A man of no less the stature of Roger Lemerre has submitted his curriculum vitae to the association so he could be considered for the position left vacant when the South African Football Association (Safa) fired Shakes Mashaba on the eve of the African Nations Cup in Tunisia. Lemerre, the only man to win two continental championships (Europe and Africa) as coach and the World Cup as an assistant, is one of 29 people whose CVs the association has received. While Tunisia are confident he’ll stay on, Safa would not be too far off the mark if they were to bag the man who sat next to Aime Jacquet as the bespectacled tactician led France to the 1998 World Cup triumph… “The search committee has been tasked with looking at the CVs submitted and deciding on the next national coach. The national executive committee has also given the search committee the freedom to head-hunt the coach,” he said during his media address after the Safa national executive committee meeting which lasted about seven hours even though only two items were discussed. Whoever gets appointed, according to Mokoena, will then be given a contract that will run until a month after the 2006 World Cup in Germany. “His main mandate will obviously be to take us to the World Cup and the African Cup of Nations in Egypt in 2006. ”

Other than the Bafana coaching post, the committee discussed the technical report from the disastrous African Nations Cup. Not much seemed to come out of that, with points such as “there needs to be improved communication with players; a way to inculcate a spirit of respect for the national jersey; technical committee and technical director need to play a major role before tournaments” being recommended. Strangely, the much-talked about resignation of Irvin Khoza from his elected Safa vice-presidency and other executive positions as well as Molefi Oliphant’s alienation of Ishmael Bhamjee from the 2010 World Cup Bid were not considered priorities.

We’ll just have to wait and see. “The Trojans said Friday that Justice was ineligible for springpractice because of a “student conduct issue” but did not mentionthe latest arrest. go.com – Mar 5, 2004
The 44-year-old has coached Bosnia since January 2002 andnarrowly missed guiding them to their first major tournament atEuro 2004. ‘This is a powerful signal that we can promptly join therace for qualification spots for the World Cup in a group inwhich we are rated as the fourth strongest – but that does notmean we will not succeed,’ Sliskovic said in a statement. Out-of-sorts Germany building for the future
Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 5, 2004
How national coach Rudi Voller must wish his team for this summer’s Euro 2004 could be built as easily. Germany have won the European Championship a record three times but the days of automatic superpower status are long gone. There is a World Cup boom at home as league attendances soar and money pours into football projects, but for Euro 2004 there’s a sense of foreboding.

South Africa favourites for World Cup
Ananova – Mar 7, 2004
“If the World Cup is granted to South Africa, it will generate significant unity among the different ethnic groups that were separated socially, culturally and in sport for years. Egypt was also said to be “capable of organising an excellent World Cup”, despite concerns over stadia, while Morocco have the “potential to organise a very good World Cup”. The inspection team was headed by Jan Peeters, president of the Belgian Football Association, with other members from Finland, Chile and France. A Fifa statement said: “The report demonstrates that at least three of the candidates are potentially capable of organising a successful Fifa World Cup single-handed. The prospect of two countries co-hosting the 2010 Fifa World Cup is therefore out of the question. The report was also positive about South Africa’s infrastructure though did mention security concerns about the high crime rate. Morocco was praised for the way their bid has been promoted and their budget plans but raised concerns about stadia.

But Brian Liebenberg, who took Traille’s place in the World Cup, has been ruled out of bench duty after twisting his knee in training. Montferrand wing Aurelien Rougerie is promoted from the France ‘A’ team to replace Liebenberg on the bench. France sprung a surprise earlier in the week by dropping veteran flanker Olivier Magne. Magne is replaced by Imanol Harinodoquy, with Thomas Lievremont coming into the team at number eight. Fly-half Frederic Michalak, who has recovered from a shoulder injury, is the only other change to the side who defeated Italy in Paris last weekend.

6. Marshall Faulk: He won a Super Bowl with the Rams and was a seven time Pro Bowler. Faulk had a total of 136 career touchdowns and over 12,000 rushing yards in one hundred fifty six (156) total games played in his career.
