Culture & Lifestyle | 19.03.2004 Germany to Host Confederation…
Deutsche Welle – Mar 19, 2004
The eight-team competition will be held over two weeks beginning on June 15, 2005. Although the decision to award the tournament to Germany was announced by world football’s governing body FIFA in Zurich on Thursday, the official announcement is expected after FIFA’s Executive Committee has ratified the decision. The Confederation Cup, being looked on by the German Football Association (DFB) as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup in 2006, will be held at stadiums in Hanover, Leipzig, Cologne, Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Gelsenkirchen. However, the Cup itself is more prestigious than just a practice run for the main event.

Island of football dreams
BBC News – Mar 18, 2004
Now, as technical director and national team coach to the Bahamas FA, White has got a job that most men would sell their mothers for. But do not think White spends his time lying on a hammock sipping a rum punch. There is serious football work afoot for the Bahamas as they embark on their 2006 World Cup Concacaf qualifying campaign. The Bahamas could have no bigger incentive as they go into their two-legged tie against Dominica – a trip to play Mexico – and White, 29, is relishing the opportunity. “The chance to play a top-ranked nation in the Azteca stadium is a massive prize, and I suppose it really would be our World Cup final. ”

The mere chance to test themselves against Mexico shows how far the Bahamas have come. As recently as the 1998 Concacaf qualifiers the Bahamas could not raise a team.

Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 19, 2004
you couldn’t be more wrong; according to the second cousin of my mother’s butcher, O’Neill will remain at Celtic for the time being while the Football Association dangle the promise of succeeding Sven-Goran Eriksson as England manager after the 2006 World Cup. Whatever the truth – and, to be fair, he has steadfastly refused to become embroiled in the merry-go-round of myths – O’Neill is the hottest property in managerial circles. Victory over Barcelona in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals on Thursday (Celtic hold a 1-0 advantage from Glasgow) and you can bet your life at least one newspaper will be linking him with an imminent move to the Nou Camp.

Phumo looks abroad for ‘powerful’ Bafana team
Independent Online – Mar 18, 2004
Prior to the announcement of the 18-man squad, South African Football Association chief executive officer, Albert Mokoena, indicated that the committee tasked with the job of naming a new head coach to replace Shakes Mashaba is expected to finalise the name of the new head coach next Tuesday. “We are hoping to finalise the new Bafana coach by next Tuesday,” Mokoena said. Phumo has included previously disgruntled players, such as the country’s leading goal scorer Shaun Bartlett of English Premiership outfit Charlton Athletic, World Cup striker George Koumantarakis, who plays in England for Preston North End, Heerenveen goalkeeper Hans Vonk, German based wing back Bradley Carnell and Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Steven Pienaar are all included in the squad… Both Fish and Fortune, who had difficulties with Mashaba, had agreed to play had they not been injured but Mokoena said that McCarthy was still officially retired from international soccer. “McCarthy is waiting to see who the new coach is. But the fact he has accepted our invitation to attend the game means that there is hope that he will be available for our 2006 World Cup qualifiers which start in June,” Mokoena said. The issue of who will captain the side will be made when the squad assembles in London on March 28. Phumo refused to discuss the future of Tottenham Hotspur defender Mbulelo Mabizela, who captained the side at the recent African Nations Cup finals in Tunisia. Mbulelo came under criticism by the Safa delegates at the for being “mercenary” in regards to payment for his services. Two local players have been included in the squad.

Following a decision by FIFA?s Emergency Committee, any player who assumes a new nationality without having a clear connection to that country will not be eligible to play for the national team. FIFA said on Wednesday players would now have to show strong links with their adopted country through their parents or grandparents, or show they have lived there for two years, to be able to play for the national team. Qatar said last week it would naturalise three Brazilians to bolster their team ahead of qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup but following FIFA?s announcement the Qatar Football Association (QFA) put the moves on hold. The QFA was set to offer Qatari citizenship to Werder Bremen striker Ailton and brothers Dede and Leandro of Borussia Dortmund. The trio have no previous link with Qatar. ?Naturalisation that allows players with no obvious connection to the new country to play for that country?s national teams is not the aim and object of the statutes,? FIFA president Sepp Blatter said in a statement. ?For that reason, we have to put an immediate stop to such practices.

European law permits member states to derogate from the agreement, which abolishes border checks between EU countries, for a temporary period under special circumstances. But whilst the body has a significant operational role in security arrangements for the World Cup in Germany 2006, it has yet to receive a green light from Portuguese national authorities for this year’s event. The body has already set up a multi-national project group, including Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy, to co-ordinate justice measures – including deportation and prosecution – for crimes committed at the next World Cup in two years time. But no such group exists as yet for the Euro 2004 championships. So as the result of no water, therefore people don’t come to town any more. Warwick Hadfield: That’s coming up later. First though, how will the bomb blast in Madrid affect not just this year’s Olympic Games in Athens but sport right around the world, including the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006. Kristine Toohey and Tracy Taylor, both from the University of Technology in Sydney, have looked at the impact of terrorism on major sporting events. Tracy Taylor says Athens provides terrorist organisations with a huge opportunity to get their message to the world. Tracy Taylor: A lot of terrorism is seen as theatre, and it depends on what message that the terrorists want to convey in terms of symbolic intent, and a lot of the targets that have been hit recently, have represented a certain aspect of Western culture that the terrorists want to signal that they disagree with, so in Bali it was the nightclubs, in Morocco the nightclubs, a lot of the other targets were economic. So it depends on the message that they want to be sending.
