Let video decisions be final
Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 20, 2004
No one made much of it at the time, but the extraordinary exit of World Cup holders France in the first round in 2002 surely had something to do with the fact that so many of their stars play in our frenetic league. Any country with a large number of Premiership players is bound to struggle when it comes to tournaments at the end of our season, which is why we have to salute any sort of break. I also think that the Football Association, when they recognise such a need, should be strong enough to make a unilateral decision to take the right course, instead of putting any proposal through all their various committees. Among these is an edict by which players who receive a red card are suspended from the next game, rather than a fortnight after their offence. I have never understood why it takes two weeks for a ban to kick in or even for an appeal to be placed… So if you brought in red cards for diving, some players would be sent off just for losing their footing, which would mean the cure would prove worse than the problem. I think the instant use of camera technology is inevitable. It is just a case of when it is brought in and we might see its experimental introduction in the 2006 World Cup. It does seem ridiculous that we cannot get things right when a poor decision at the highest level can be so costly. The only debate will be about what decisions can be decided by the technology. Initially, many in the game might only want its use for matters of fact, such as whether the ball has crossed the goal-line or not. But where do we draw the line? Could it also be used to determine penalty decisions, free-kicks, offside goals or right down to whether a first-minute throw-in should have been given?I feel that we should do everything possible to get things right, while balancing the technology against the discretion needed by referees and the importance of keeping the game flowing.

Claudio’s last stand
Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 21, 2004
I do recall, however, that in the early autumn of 2000, when Ranieri was spotted at Stamford Bridge with Vincenzo Morabito, an agent Chelsea then favoured, astute colleagues of mine went straight to their phones. The arranging of notionally simple things – and what could be more straightforward than the employment of an unemployed coach? – has for some years been football’s fastest-growing sector. Look at the two sons of Sir Alex Ferguson who went into football. Darren became a player, Jason an agent. Guess which one became rich and famous? Anyway, their dad lost a valued colleague… Fabio Capello, to whom I spoke yesterday, said he wanted to spend another year at Roma. So the Eriksson saga will no doubt continue. It has made the Swede, normally the most equable of men, confess to anger – and no wonder when the FA, who already have him under contract to the end of the World Cup in 2006, keep pushing and pushing for an extension. It seems daft to me. If England flop in Portugal, surely the FA will want flexibility. If, as is more likely, they go all the way to the final with a side young enough to carry on to Germany two years hence, no coach worth his salt will walk away. Eriksson’s movements will be governed by inclination, not contract and, if his inclination were ever to quit England for Chelsea, it would be public-relations poison for both him and the club.

Tavares to sign on for 1 year
Viet Nam News – Mar 20, 2004
The
Brazilian told Viet Nam Television however that it could be
renewed if things went well. Though not
confirmed yet, both sides hope to sign the contract next Monday,
just a week prior to the World Cup 2006 qualifying match against
Lebanon to be hosted by Viet Nam. The first
foreigner to coach Viet Nam?s national team ? in 1995 ? told
the channel that it was "unnecessary" for him to sign a
two-year contract with the federation now. "I left
Viet Nam for a long time and I don?t have necessary information
[about Viet Nam?s football]," he said. The
federation did not have much information about him either and so
if things went well, they could agree to long term co-operation,
he said. Earlier this
week, Tavares agreed to return to the helm after a nine-year
absence.

Fabian Taylor’s ‘goal-den’ touch
Jamaica Observer – Mar 20, 2004
I am ready to go and take on the challenge and do my best up there and to help the team to go as far as possible

Fabian Taylor could be on his way to realising his dreams. Taylor was originally scheduled to leave for New York on March 9 to begin his stint, “but the MLS blocked the move” and suggested that he wait until his work permit is granted. “So I could be leaving in the next three to four days or so,” he said. Taylor, 23, told Sporting World that he is ready. “I am ready to go and take on the challenge and do my best up there and to help the team to go as far as possible,” he said, beaming with confidence… I also got a trial in Russia, but when I reached there the people who had requested me to come all got fired. Everything was wrong there,” Taylor said. With World Cup qualifiers coming up in June, it is the player’s sincere wish to be a part of the national plan. “I want to be there for every game, but it is all up to the coach to select. It is my job to go out there so the coach can see that I am working hard,” Taylor noted. While he has done fairly well at the international level, he is of the view that he could have done better. “I just have to work harder, keep my focus, and try to move on from the point that I am right now,” he chimed.

Angel’s future is constantly under the spotlight and only now does it appear Villa are prepared to open negotiations over a new contract for their 20-goal leading scorer. But it has emerged he has more than two years of his deal to run with Villa ready to take up a 12-month option on his services which could keep him at the club until the summer of 2006. Angel also wants to delay linking up with Colombia for the World Cup qualifier with Peru on March 31 until after next Saturday’s game at Charlton. He said: "I will be playing at Charlton, definitely. It will be tough week because on the Sunday I will fly to Peru but I want to be involved in the Charlton game. "I will be speaking to the national coach. I will try to persuade him that I want to play for Villa first.
