BBC SPORT | Football | African | Zambia prepare for Zimbabwe
BBC News – Apr 25, 2004
There is also room in the squad for Zacharriah Simukonda, who plays his club football for Sudanese side El-Merreikh. Zambia and Zimbabwe were supposed to play a friendly shortly before the 2004 Cup of Nations, but Zimbabwe cancelled the tie a few days before with fears of potential injuries and financial worries to the fore. Both teams are using the tie as preparations for the 2006 World Cup and Nations Cup qualifying campaign. Zambia will contest Group 1 alongside Senegal, Mali, Togo, Liberia and Congo, while Zimbabwe are in Group 4. The Warriors must top a group comprising Nigeria, Algeria, Angola, Gabon and Rwanda if they are to reach their first World Cup finals in Germany. Zambian squad:

Budweiser and a Big Mac? If global conglomerates get their way, the only beer and food you’ll be able to buy at the World Cup will be from Anheuser-Busch and McDonald’s. Last decade, the two companies signed long-term deals with FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, that gave them exclusive rights to distribute their products in and around venues at the World Cup. For Germany 2006, this means that Munich’s world-renowned beers and Nuremberg’s famous bratwursts won’t be a part of the World Cup. To shun German beers in Germany is almost like shunning Catholicism in the Vatican. Germany takes its beer very seriously, and always has. Dating back to the 1500s, German beer – by law – can be made of only yeast, grain, hops and water. In a nation where well over half the adult population regularly drinks beer, shutting out the native brew is like telling a fish it can’t swim.

Lauren returns for Cameroon
BBC News – Apr 23, 2004
Etame, Pierre Wome and Joseph D?sir? Job are part of a 22-man squad for the 28 April friendly against Bulgaria in Sofia. Lauren, who plays for English Premiership side Arsenal, quit the Indomitable Lions after laying the blame for their poor 2002 World Cup performance on the country’s football federation. But Schaefer has convinced him to return as Cameroon prepare for the 2006 Nations Cup and World Cup qualifiers, which commence on 4 June. Wome also put aside a bitter quarrel with football officials which cost him a place in their 2004 Nations Cup squad. Job missed that competition due to injury. Another player making a comeback is goalkeeper Hamidou Souleymanou of Turkey’s Denizlispor. Souleymanou was a reserve goalkeeper at the 2000 Nations Cup finals but had been subsequently ignored until now.

O’Shea backs Roy Keane return
rte.ie – Apr 24, 2004
Two years on and with McCarthy now replaced by Kerr, Keane offered to return to the fold. And though opinion here is still divided over whether the 32-year-old midfielder’s olive branch should have been accepted, Kerr had little hesitation in naming him in his squad at the earliest possible opportunity. There may yet be some bridges to build with certain members of the squad, but O’Shea is adamant Keane should be part of the team aiming to reach the 2006 World Cup in Germany. “I am delighted to have him back,” said the 22-year-old. “He will be just as important to Ireland as he is to Manchester United, particularly in midfield where we have a few young, talented lads. ”
“The likes of Andy Reid, Liam Miller, Stephen Reid and, when he is fit, Colin Healy will have the chance to pick up so much experience. When you learn from Roy Keane, you are learning from the best in the business… I’m sure Brian is clever enough to know what to do. ”
“I just think it is great news for Ireland and I am really looking forward to the game next week. Hopefully everything will go well and we can start concentrating on the football again. ”

But then again, so might Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff, Marco Van Basten, Dino Zoff, Alfredo Di Stefano, Eusebio, Lev Yashin, Michel Platini or Paolo Maldini who all finished in the Top 10 behind Zidane in the voting. So the argument comes to this: was Di Stefano a better footballer than Van Basten? Was Platini a better footballer than Zidane? The answer is: Who on earth knows ? The question should have been: What European has contributed more to European football than any other in the last 50 years ? There is only one candidate for that accolade: ?Der Kaiser?, Franz Beckenbauer, who has been directly involved in football since he was a teenager. The only man to win the World Cup as a player and as a coach, Beckenbauer has gone on to high office with Bayern Munich and is a figurehead in Germany?s 2006 World Cup plans. He could have retired and played golf and spent days out in the 4×4 with his family. Instead, he has continually worked for the sport that made him a rich and revered man from the time he was in his 20s. The good thing is, no one has to decide on that contribution now. government officials refused this week to issue visas to the Iranian national team, thus canceling matches scheduled for the next two weeks in Los Angeles and against the Guatemalan national team in Dallas. Bernd Stange, the German coach of the Iraqi national team, fled Iraq this weekend, amid security concerns and bitter complaints about a lack of support from the governing Coalition. It’s unclear what comes next for the Iraqis, in the midst of their qualifying campaign for World Cup 2006. Speaking of WC 2006, the host Germans reacted with understandable horror and outrage this week when FIFA announced that due to promotional contracts, only one beer will be served at any of the German stadia or their environs: Budweiser. Well, I guess that’s one way to cut down on drinking. And speaking of FIFA, President Sepp Blatter announced this week that Cameroon would be penalized six points in their World Cup qualifying group (that’s two full games, in a 10-game schedule), for wearing one-piece bodysuits at a previous African tournament. Blatter had expressed his displeasure with the fashion choice last fall – shortly after suggesting that what the women’s game really needs is skimpier uniforms, in particular shorter shorts and tighter shirts.

The game was part of their preparations for 2006 World Cup and African Cup
of Nations qualifying rounds, which they might not participate in due to
lack of funds. Despite the negative news, which could have affected their morale, the
Zebras played well and proved that, they are a force to be reckoned with. The victory by the under-20 side could also have motivated the senior team. The young Zebras walloped Namibia 5-0 during an African Youth Championship
qualifier at the weekend. Cosmos coach, Collen Tlemo said the Zebras' s performance easily defined
them as a national team… They deserved to win. They are technically better than my boys. “You can see that Botswana football has grown and this team is very good. As
for the two goals I felt that they were silly goals. The other one was a
mistake from the keeper and the other one was just a corner kick which could
have been prevented, but the people were not there,” said Tlemo. The Zebras created some chances but failed to score until Tshepo
Motlhabankwe found the back of the net on the 27th minute with an easy goal
that left the Cosmos keeper very frustrated. The second goal came a few minutes later through Pontsho Moloi who was
making his debut for the senior national team.

Zico to quit after 2006

Tokyo: Japan coach Zico has hinted he intends to quit after the 2006 World Cup, a Japanese newspaper reported on Friday. ?Nothing is certain but I doubt I will be coaching (Japan) after 2006,? the Brazilian was quoted by Japan?s Nikkan Sports daily. ?Like I?ve said before, I still feel I can do a job for Japanese football. But I won?t accept any offers from J-League clubs. ?

Zico, who was talking to reporters in Budapest, where Japan play Hungary in a friendly at the weekend, said that he had no interest in coaching Brazil.

Gunners crowned Premiership champions
Independent Online – Apr 25, 2004
But it was still an afternoon to savour for an Arsenal side who have displayed remarkable mental strength and determination this season to bounce back from the trauma of the late collapse which saw them gift the 2002-03 title to Manchester United. The title is the third Arsenal have won in eight seasons under the shrewd guidance of their manager, Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman could have his pick of any job in world football but he has committed himself to staying in London until at least 2006, when Arsenal will move from Highbury to a new 60,000-seat stadium that will give them the financial firepower to compete with United on a level playing field. Wenger’s previous Premiership triumphs were achieved in seasons – 1997-98 and 2001-02 – in which Arsenal also won the FA Cup. Yet despite winning doubles those Arsenal sides never achieved the kind of shift in the balance of power in English football that most observers agree has taken place this season. For Wenger, the players and the fans, memories of this season will inevitably be tainted by twinges of regret that such a talented side missed out on a fantastic opportunity to win the FA Cup and the Champions League, as well as the championship. But the current side still has a chance to earn a place in history by becoming the first English top flight side to go through an entire season unbeaten since Preston North End achieved that feat in a 12-team first division in 1888-89.

Rochester may be MLS-ready soon
Rochester Democrat and Chronicle – Apr 25, 2004
MLS plans to expand by two teams by 2006 at the latest. One team will be owned by Mexican interests and is expected to play in San Diego or Los Angeles. Rochester has been listed as a strong MLS candidate for several years and has at least five big things in its favor:1. Rochester is expected to have a brand-new soccer stadium up and running for the 2005 season. No other expansion candidate can say the same… Wealthy sportsman Lamar Hunt, after whom the U. Open Cup has been named, owns both the Dallas and Kansas City franchises. He is helping to build a soccer-specific stadium for the Burn in his hometown of Dallas but has announced no plans for a such a facility for the Wizards, who play in Arrowhead Stadium (Hunt also owns the NFL’s Chiefs). Hunt has visited Rochester in the past and has been impressed with this community’s affection for soccer at all levels and the enthusiastic support of Rhinos fans. He recognizes that the 1999 Rhinos were the only non-MLS team to win the U.

His achievement, enthusiastically greeted by the 60,000 present at the course, was all the more welcome as it gave racing respite from race-fixing allegations, which had dominated newspapers for the previous fortnight. Chief concern for the jumping world was the incident in which rider Sean Fox was found guilty by stewards of stepping off his horse in a race at Fontwell.
