Wright-Phillips eases into Beckham mould
Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 9, 2004
And he will do so because the man who Sven-Goran Eriksson would most like to accommodate in his team is Manchester City’s pepperpot-sized right-winger. Wright-Phillips is what England have craved for so long – a genuine winger with the pace and tricks to plot a route behind the opposition’s back four. In short, as Beckham admitted, that one element the England captain cannot offer himself. “Shaun’s quicker than me and he runs at players, which I don’t,” he said. “It’s the same at Real Madrid where Luis Figo runs at players and takes them on, whereas if I get a chance to cross it as soon as I can, I will… In the post-Euro 2004, post-Paul Scholes generation it was Wright-Phillips and his friend, Jermain Defoe, who Beckham marked out yesterday as the squad’s future. Yet Beckham seemed to lack the appetite to try to talk up a whole new qualifying campaign. While earlier in the week his friend, Gary Neville, had defiantly insisted that he would be around, at the age of 33, for Euro 2008, Beckham was rather more circumspect. “Maybe my legs will keep going for a few more years,” he said, “but maybe this is my last shot. “No-one really believes that Beckham will walk off the stage before his time, and certainly not before Neville, but there was more understatement to his words than in the messy, emotional sign-off after defeat to Portugal in Euro 2004. “I’ll do it by leading by example and being the captain that many captains have been over the years,” he said. “Bryan Robson, Alan Shearer, Roy Keane lead by example and fight for every ball and that’s the only thing I can do.

Dundee ground plan
Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 31, 2004
Due to the location of Tannadice and Dens, any sale of those sites is unlikely to raise significant capital. While confirming the on-going dialogue with Linton, Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompson remains cautious. “After the Euro 2008 bid failed, we looked at many sites with a view to ground-sharing with Dundee,” he said. “This particular site is merely another, and proposals are at a very early stage. “As for Dundee, the estimated three-year wait for a new home might be the stumbling block. If Dundee do decide to move across to Tannadice as tenants of United, even a short-lease may prove too much for many fans vowing never to set foot in the opposition’s camp. Everton striker Duncan Ferguson will not be charged by the Football Association over accusations that he racially abused Fulham’s Luis Boa-Morte.

Wales tie up lucrative deal with Sky
go.com – Apr 7, 2004
BBC Wales have held exclusive rights with the FAW since the mid-1980s andbelieved their bid – thought to be around ?7million for the four years on offer- would prevail. But Sky topped that and are thought to be paying the FAW approaching?10million for all home internationals until 2008. The new deal will also include Euro 2008 qualifiers and has more than doubledthe FAW’s money from the deal with BBC that ends this summer, which was foraround ?4million. It is believed BBC Wales’ head of sport Nigel Walker, a former internationalathlete, travelled last week to watch Wales beat Hungary in Budapest in thebelief he had tied up the contract. So when Sky and the FAW announced the new deal today it came as a huge shockto BBC journalists, several high-ranking staff only finding out via mobile phonecalls as they were on their way to domestic matches. One said: ‘This is a bolt from the blue, we have held this contract for over20 years and covered Wales when they were not doing well and being watched by4,000 people at Wrexham. ‘The FAW wanted us then, and needed us to promote the team, but now they havehave a sniff of success we have been blown out… It is believed BBC Wales’ head of sport Nigel Walker, a former internationalathlete, travelled last week to watch Wales beat Hungary in Budapest in thebelief he had tied up the contract. FAW president Tegwyn Evans, who was at the association’s council meeting inCaersws where the deal was announced, said: ‘The deal does not involve radiocontracts, these will be sold off separately. ‘If the BBC bid for and win those rights, it would ensure Welsh languagecoverage on Radio Cymru.

Scotland: Odds already in for when Walter Smith will go

So with Walter Smith still checking out how many times he can revolve without stopping in his new swivel chair William Hill are checking out how long it will be before he, err, checks out. William Hill are also prepared to consider how long any of the home nation bosses will last (and indeed whether Elvis will turn up). William Hill are also prepared to consider how long any of the home nation bosses will last (and indeed whether Elvis will turn up). William Hill make 2007 the favourite sacking year – I guess to coincide with the middle of the Euro 2008 qualification bid. Given that Scotland do not have much of a history for sacking managers and that the 2006 campaign is effectively written off it would be odd to see any real pressure on Smith before 2007. Failure to reach Euro 2008 may be a bite-point but I would go for him achieving qualification based on a strong midfield of Ferguson and Fletcher and lasting to 2008 and beyond.

Atkinson resigns from television pundit’s role after racist…
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Apr 22, 2004
Atkinson believed that his microphone had been switched off and used the f-word and the n-word in describing the France defender. British viewers were oblivious to the incident because the transmission had finished, but the remarks were aired in parts of the Middle East on behalf of the European Broadcasting Union. An ITV spokesman said: “We do not in any way condone the comments in question, which were not broadcast as part of ITV’s coverage but were made in an off-air comment after the game. It was a regrettable lapse by a respected and experienced broadcaster who has been part of ITV’s sports team for many years. “We have discussed the situation with Ron Atkinson, who is devastated and very sorry for any offence caused by his comments. He immediately offered his resignation, which we have accepted. ” Atkinson, 65, issued a statement last night: “I made a stupid mistake which I regret.

Sky net Wales internationals
Ananova – Apr 19, 2004
The new deal begins in August and sees the satellite broadcaster gain rights to home friendlies and qualifiers for World Cup 2006 – including their match with England – and Euro 2008. FAW secretary general David Collins said: “We are delighted with this agreement with a new partner, Sky Sports. “From next season, we look forward to seeing more Welsh football on our screens with increased television coverage of not only full internationals but other representative matches and the domestic game. “And the financial input will also help us to further develop Welsh football at all levels. Sky also now posses the rights to Welsh league and cup football, although they will pass on much of these to a terrestrial station… The new deal begins in August and sees the satellite broadcaster gain rights to home friendlies and qualifiers for World Cup 2006 – including their match with England – and Euro 2008. Taste of tournamentsPlaying in a major youth tournament can be an invaluable experience for young players, allowing them to mix with players from other cultures as well as gain a taste of the rhythms and unique demands of tournament life. France are hosting the finals this summer and therefore do not have to qualify, while 28 other countries have reached the second, and final, qualifying round and therefore have ambitions of joining Les Bleus in the eight-team final tournament. Twenty-eight hopefulsThe 28 nations to progress from round one have been divided into seven mini-tournament groups of four teams. Each country plays each other once with the top team after these series of matches progressing to the finals. It is the second year this format has been in use after UEFA restructured its youth tournaments – something which has won much praise for the way it offers smaller countries a greater opportunity to play international youth matches. New format”Of the 52 associations I think that only a couple would consider going back to the old format,” said the chairman of UEFA’s Youth and Amateur Football Committee, Jim Boyce… Many of the mini-tournaments have an extremely competitive look to them, especially Group 5 – which includes Germany, Denmark, Slovakia and Ukraine – and Group 3, where Italy, Poland, Serbia and Montenegro and Turkey square off. Austria buildAnother intriguing section is Group 6 which contains Austria, Finland, Romania and Moldova. The Austrians, who reached the semi-finals of both the U17 and U19 event last season, are hoping to continue their revival as they build towards co-hosting UEFA EURO 2008™. “I was very pleased with our defence in the previous round as we only conceded three goals,” said Austria coach Paul Gludovatz. “I think our chances are about 50-50. “Strong EnglandAmong the other countries to watch out for are England, whose superb qualification record and strength in depth at lower age levels must surely be rewarded with a major tournament victory soon. After recent draws with Portugal and France and a thumping win againt Finland in the Algarve youth tournament, John Peacock’s side will certainly start as red-hot favourites to win a section which also includes Norway, Armenia and Iceland on home soil.

“Right now, it is possible we could collect all three trophies and, obviously, we would love that to happen,” he said. “Realistically, it is going to be very difficult, but we are hoping that this year we will do it. ”
Minimum requirementA busy fixture list will not have worked in Madrid’s favour. Since the season started in August, most of Madrid’s players have appeared in international games, the Torneo Bernabéu against CA River Plate on 23 September, and Ronaldo and Zidane’s charity match in Basel on 15 December, in addition to a hectic domestic and European schedule. In total, the team has played 45 matches. To achieve the treble, they must play a minimum of 73. Squad rotationCoach Carlos Queiroz has resisted the temptation to rotate his squad this term – even in the Spanish Cup.
