‘No need for terror cover’, says Euro 2004
Guardian Unlimited – May 2, 2004
The controversial decision comes weeks after 191 people were killed in bomb attacks in Madrid, and just days after the International Olympic Committee announced it had taken out $170 million (£96m) of cover against the risk that the games this summer, in Athens, are called off. Yesterday, Uefa, the organiser of the Euro 2004 tournament, which will be held in Portugal, defended its move. A Uefa spokesman said: ‘We did not feel it was necessary to get an insurance policy against cancellation. We are not facing the same situation the Olympic committee is facing – the US is not playing in Euro 2004.

The 24-year-old tore a muscle in last week’s win over Chelsea and Magpies boss Sir Bobby Robson said: “It will need at least two months to repair. “That is without him being involved in serious training so we do not know how long it will take for him to get fit. ”

With Gareth Southgate also a doubt because of a knee injury, England could turn to Manchester United’s Wes Brown. England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson had hinted earlier this week that a question mark over Brown’s fitness could mean he would miss out on a place in the squad.

This Bhoy is not for turning, says Henrik
Edinburgh Evening News – May 1, 2004
However, Larsson said: “There is no chance of me changing my mind about Celtic. “I turned back on my decision of two years ago not to play for Sweden but I am sure I will be leaving Celtic after this season. “I came to the decision that it was time to move on and I still feel that is the right choice and I am happy with that. ” Larsson retired from the international scene two years ago but returned temporarily last April to help an injury-hit Sweden side win a Euro 2004 qualifier against Hungary. His decision to quit even prompted UEFA president Lennart Johansson to campaign for his return. But the Hoops forward has revealed the biggest influence on his international career has been his six-year-old son Jordan.

There are those who contend that England is not a changed country, with an entirely revised set of goals and ambitions, just because Jonny Wilkinson stabbed a ball between two posts. It became a pretty furious argument over the mince pies. How could a land, ill-educated, multi-cultural and still apologetic for our pirates in the 15th century, start to breed citizens who behaved in sporting matters like Australians? Fierce, proud, united and unbreakable; these have not been British sporting traits by tradition.

Ferdinand ‘will emerge stronger’

But it might be good for Rio. In fact, I am sure it will be because coming through this will make him even stronger. “Beckham added that those qualities make Ferdinand a potential England captain, but joked: “I’m not going to give it up easily!” England look set to lose Ferdinand for Euro 2004, depending on the outcome of an appeal and Beckham admitted that was a major blow. “Any great player would be missed and Rio is a great player, everyone realises that. We’ll have to wait and see what happens. “Rio is a major part of our squad but even without him we have a strong togetherness. Everyone is welcomed and that’s the way it will always be… But it might be good for Rio. Robben to be United’s new Giggs
Telegraph.co.uk – May 1, 2004
Although he was signed by PSV in 2001 for £2. 4 million, he stayed at Groningen for another year to finish his schooling. He made his Holland international debut in April and was called into the squad for the Euro 2004 play-off second-leg victory over Scotland. He would not be eligible for the Champions League this season having played, and scored twice, for PSV in the competition. Ferguson said: “We are interested in him. We are hoping to do business with PSV. “Giggs turned 30 in November and, as Ferguson’s longest-serving player, has committed his future to the club.

Sam’s call starts rush

He is open to offers and his agent has been in touch with Bolton boss Sam Allardyce as he tries to find his man a new berth in either Italy’s Serie A, Spain’s La Liga or the Premiership. Allardyce said: “I had a call from his agent and said, if he was to come to Bolton we wouldn’t be able to pay him what he’s on now. I can’t say we’re not interested but can we afford him? “All of a sudden it’s in the papers that we are interested in him. It’s amazing how many other clubs that kick-starts into action. “They go into panic. If they were thinking about trying to get the player they realise they had better try to get him now. International “That’s what happens when clubs read stories like that and it works… That’s why agents do it. “In the volatile world we live in it’s something you don’t like but its something that you can’t do anything about. Lizarazu is expected to retire from international football after Euro 2004 in Portugal and will leave Bayern after a fall-out with club officials over team tactics. He said: “Everything is in the open and I will probably get a transfer to another league. Lizarazu has spent seven largely successful seasons with Bayern, winning four Bundesliga titles and the Champions League. He said: “I will leave Bayern without any regret nor nostalgia, although it will feel weird to go after such a long time. I will study all the offers and will make the best possible choice.

Vogts still the right man
BBC News – May 2, 2004
Estonia must be quivering in their boots and Trinidad and Tobago will need their combined might to put any more than three past us. Actually I am still raging at that fixture. Not that we have stooped so low to be taking a match against Trinidad and Tobago, but the fact that we are playing it at home. Come on, if ever there was an away game we wanted, that was it. I mean Easter Road or the Caribbean? You choose. Anyway Copenhagen was the latest stopover on Scotland’s Tour de Farce, losing again even if it was only 1-0… Any alternative manager isn’t going to be able to magic new players from the great beyond. I haven’t covered a major tournament since France 98 because if Scotland don’t travel neither do I and your old reporter is running out of time. It is going to be murder watching Euro 2004 on the television, desperately wishing we were there and that certain other nations weren’t, so I’ll need to adopt a team. I did think about England, but then again I have so many friends in France that I think I’ll just lend them my backing. And dream of a darker blue.

Izzet whipped the free-kick across the six-yard box, but Dickov’s flicked back-header flew wide of the far post. Johansson was released behind the defence following a break by Euell on 40 minutes. But Walker, hoping for a call-up into England’s Euro 2004 squad, got down quickly to make the save low to his right. Alan Curbishley looked to apply some width to his side in the second half when he brought on former Arsenal youngster Jerome Thomas for his first-team debut in place of Paul Konchesky on the left. However, the home side failed to find any inspiration in the final third. Johansson broke free inside the box after a tussle with Dabizas, only to find no-one in support when he played the loose ball back across goal. The Addicks were level just moments later, though, when Fortune was left unmarked at the far post from a corner to give Walker no chance with a close-range header on 53 minutes… ‘We won’t have the problems we had two years ago of administration, but it isgoing to take a massive rebuilding job. ‘I am sure there will be clubs out there looking at my players and thinkingthat they might want them in their team. ‘I won’t stand in anybody’s way – if they are good enough they will be onthis stage again next season. If they are not, first day of pre-season we areback at it. ‘But I can’t say who will be here and who will not on that first day ofpre-season. ”When you are at the bottom things just seem to go against you,’ reflectedAdams. ‘I have just seen it on the TV and it was not a penalty and did not merit asending off.

Les Bleus have come a long way
Hindu – May 2, 2004
Platini, scorer of 41 international goals, coached France between 1988 and 1992. The team, however, failed to qualify for the 1990 World Cup and fell at the group stage in Euro-92. Gerard Houllier, now coach of Liverpool, took over from Platini but, again, France did not qualify for the 1994 World Cup. When Aime Jacquet took over in November 1993, France finally hit its stride. He oversaw a resurrection period that included a 30-game unbeaten streak at one point. Its core shaped around Zinedine Zidane, Didier Deschamps, Laurent Blanc and Youri Djorkaeff, France reached the Euro-96 semifinals. Two years later, it secured the ultimate prize — beating Brazil 3-0 to win the 1998 World Cup on two Zidane goals.

However, Newcastle decided not to take up the second year on his contract. Kluivert started off brightly in the Premier League, but, due to constant knee injuries, failed to impress in the second part of the season. Valencia

Kluivert decided to return to Spain to play for Valencia CF. Reportedly, the club included a special clause in his contract that allowed for Kluivert to be sacked if he lacked discipline off the pitch. Kluivert was given permission to look for a new club in July 2006 after just one season and 202 minutes played, as he spent most of the season injured… Kluivert scored a hat-trick in the 6-1 quarterfinal demolition of Yugoslavia. The semifinal against Italy would provide much heartache for both Kluivert and his Dutch side; Kluivert missed two penalties during the game, and though he would make amends by scoring in the penalty shootout, it would be in vain as the Dutch bowed out of the tournament, losing 3-1 on penalties. During Euro 2004, Kluivert didn’t play a single minute, while his team reached the semi-finals again. Kluivert was left out of the 2006 World Cup squad by coach Marco van Basten. In fact, Kluivert was not called up to play in any of the qualifying games leading up to the World Cup. This was partly due to the fact that he suffered persistent injuries which prevented him from playing for his club during the 05-06 season. The international career of Patrick Kluivert seems all but over now that Marco van Basten will continue to be the national team coach until Euro 2008.

McClaren rues finishing
BBC News – May 2, 2004
“We came to win and the football in the first half was terrific, we certainly matched their intensity. “Liverpool showed desire and I couldn’t fault our attitude, but our finishing did not match the rest of our play. ”

McClaren revealed he had spoken to England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson about Boro defender Ugo Ehiogu possibly going to Euro 2004. “Sven was asking about Ugo in fact and I thought the player did himself no harm today,” added McClaren.

ESPNsoccernet – Europe – Nice v Monaco Report
go.com – May 3, 2004
On Sunday Deschamps was voted France’s coach of the year by his peers and the diminutive former midfielder is still well in the hunt for the Champions League and the Ligue 1 title. Second-placed Monaco are two points behind Lyon with four games remaining in France but in the Champions League only a remarkable turnaround can prevent Monaco from qualifying for the final as they defend a 3-1 first-leg lead at Stamford Bridge. Not everything in the garden is rosy for Monaco, however, and two of their regular first team players are doubtful for Wednesday’s match at Stamford Bridge where Deschamps spent a year as a player in the late nineties. French international midfielder Jerome Rothen and Croatian forward Dado Prso are both doubtful for the match in west London after picking up injuries during the 2-1 victory over Nice on Friday. If Prso misses out, Deschamps will probably partner Fernando Morientes with Shabani Nonda. Born in Burundi but a Democratic Republic of Congo international, Nonda was Ligue 1’s top scorer with 26 goals last season. This year he was ruled out of most of the season after picking up a cruciate ligament injury in August but returned to the fray last month and scored Monaco’s third against Chelsea with his first touch after coming on as a substitute… Deschamps has reportedly refused the offer because he was not given the budget he wanted. With possible coaching vacancies coming up at Real Madrid and Chelsea he may be biding his time although certainly his achievements with Monaco may persuade him to stay in the Principality. Another possibility could come with the French national team – current coach Jacques Santini has admitted he has had approaches from several European clubs and may depart after Euro 2004. It is taken as read that at some stage of his career Deschamps will take the reins of Les Bleus where, even as a player, he reportedly wielded huge influence in the dressing room. Under 1998 World Cup winning boss Aime Jacquet and his successor Roger Lemerre, Deschamps and Laurent Blanc were reportedly consulted on selection matters.

It’s Azzurri or overseas for Marcello Lippi
Calcutta Telegraph – May 1, 2004
?

If Lippi sticks to his word and rejects any overtures from other leading Serie A clubs then his next job will see him either take over the reins of the Italian national team or try his hand in the English or Spanish league. ?I have always said that maybe I would go abroad or to the national team but only after that six or seven months,? said Lippi on Thursday. Former Juventus coach Giovanni Trapattoni will lead Italy into the Euro 2004 finals but should the Azzurri fail to reach the latter stages ?Trap? is almost certain to be replaced and Lippi would be the front-runner. ?Who wouldn?t like to coach the national side?,? said Lippi. ?From June 12 I will be the No. 1 fan of the Italy team and I hope that they win the European championships. If they call on me I will be honoured,? he added… 1 fan of the Italy team and I hope that they win the European championships. If they call on me I will be honoured,? he added. Should that not work out there would be no shortage of offers for one of the most highly respected coaches in the game. Lippi said he had already rejected a number of approaches during this season. The reason Lippi will be in demand for any vacancies that emerge at top European clubs is quite simply his outstanding record of success. In his two spells at the Turin club Lippi won five Italian titles and took Juventus to four Champions League finals, winning the continent?s top trophy in 1996. This season Juve struggled to keep pace with Milan and Roma in Serie A and were eliminated from the Champions League.

The informed whispers emanating from Highbury and Anfield should be snuffed out with immediate effect. Whack a ’20m price tag on the 22-year-old’s head or dangle a new double-your-money contract in front of him, but for goodness sake Manchester City don’t let the little wizard swap sky blue for any other team’s red. It is not often that someone who patrols the flank, either left or right, is the heartbeat of a side but SWP is not just the main artery of this Blues line up, more its very soul. Whether he is chasing an opponent back towards his own penalty area to make a tackle, stretching those cartoon quick legs in pursuit of a goalscoring opportunity, or simply making life a misery for members of the full-back union, Wright-Phillips is everything a City fan wants his or her players to be. He lifts even the most mundane occasion with tangible electricity and should be cherished. The England Euro 2004 wannabe was at it again as the Blues decided they had lived on the edge for too long and at last brought the previously blurred vision of safety into sharp focus. Even in the enervating heat of a spring Eastlands afternoon, Wright-Phillips was everywhere always providing a strand of hope even though City had clearly been second best in the opening exchanges… Whether he is chasing an opponent back towards his own penalty area to make a tackle, stretching those cartoon quick legs in pursuit of a goalscoring opportunity, or simply making life a misery for members of the full-back union, Wright-Phillips is everything a City fan wants his or her players to be. Even in the enervating heat of a spring Eastlands afternoon, Wright-Phillips was everywhere always providing a strand of hope even though City had clearly been second best in the opening exchanges. As he grew in confidence and belief so too did his team-mates and, just as importantly, so did the crowd who made this win an occasion to remember. Wonderful Ironically, the moment that brought the house down had little to do with Wright-Phillips. A thousand agonies were instantly soothed when Nicolas Anelka danced in from the right touchline, slalomed towards the edge of the box and then delivered a pinpoint centre for Paulo Wanchope to break his Eastlands drought and plant a firm 59th-minute header beyond Shay Given.
