France fury over Santini and Spurs
Telegraph.co.uk – May 6, 2004
“Santini is not a man to cross lightly: he once accused former Bordeaux coach Elie Baup of getting him sacked by Toulouse in 1989 and still refuses to shake his hand when they meet. When Santini felt that Lyons president Jean-Michel Aulas was not allowing him to run the transfer policy after guiding the club to their first-ever league title in 2002, he refused to continue as coach. His France contract expires on June 30 and his Spurs deal begins on July 1, the following day, so Santini could feasibly be Tottenham’s boss while France are still involved in Euro 2004 which ends on July 4. “We will find a financial agreement and we won’t act like bandits if that scenario arises,” promised Simonet. Santini did not want his appointment to leak out during the tournament.

Scolari’s Euro plans are disrupted
CNN International – May 6, 2004
Scolari has put back the naming of his squad for the finals by two days to May 18, with players due to assemble on May 20 in Obidos, 80 km north of Lisbon. Porto’s place in the Champions League final will mean five Scolari regulars will not be able to join the squad until at least a week after the start of the camp. Centrer back Ricardo Carvalho, full backs Paulo Ferreira and Nuno Valente and midfielders Deco Souza, Francisco Costinha and Maniche Ribeiro should all be in the Porto side to take on Monaco on May 26 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Real Madrid midfielder Luis Figo will also be absent for a few days, with the final game of the Spanish league season not until May 23. Leading striker Pauleta Resendes will be an even later arrival as his Paris St Germain side take on Chateauroux in the final of the French Cup on May 29. Scolari also faces uncertainty over the availability of defender Rui Jorge, who has been provisionally suspended after an anti-allergy medicine he had taken caused him to fail a drugs test… The positive test was down to the failure of his club, Sporting, to inform the national anti-doping council that the medicine had been prescribed. The medicine is allowed if declared but Jorge still faces a six-month suspension. Portugal have two friendly matches to come before the start of Euro 2004, against Luxembourg on May 29 and against Lithuania on June 5. The Euro 2004 hosts are in Group A alongside Greece, Russia and Spain. The Tournament starts on June 12 and runs until July 4.

Films revive spectre of football hooliganism | Special reports |…
Guardian Unlimited – May 4, 2004
Disaffected, bored and living for the weekends, their violent exploits are stoked by alcohol and drugs, and the film attempts to examine the loyalty, friendship and fear that unites the gang. “This is England’s worst nightmare,” declares the pre-publicity, and it is the timing of the release that has caused most disquiet among the authorities and supporters. It goes on general release the week before Millwall appear in the FA Cup final, and a fortnight later the England team will travel to Portugal under threat of expulsion from Euro 2004 if there is a repeat of the violent scenes that have marred previous tournaments. The director, Nick Love, dismisses the suggestion that the film will incite violence, and says his focus on the seamier side of the game casts light on a constituency that does not usually appear on screen – white, working class men. “I wanted to make the film because it’s about what is a largely unreported sub-culture,” he said. “No one has had a stab before at making a film about the working class and lower middle class men who make up 70% of the population, the sort of people who follow England away. “There is a huge amount of anger and disillusionment among young men that gets its release in football… The international fascination with the English disease is evident in the fact that The Yank is being made with American money. Writer-director Lexi Alexander, a German woman who became interested in football when her brother took her to games, says football hooliganism is fruitful ground for drama. “But this is not a film to glamorise violence. I hope that the audience will see that this violence stems from anonymity and boredom, and that living outside the rules like this brings great danger,” she said. “Only in war films do you usually have the opportunity to explore the integrity, camaraderie and friendship among young men who fight,” she said. “It is an instinct among young men to fight, and without wars they have to invent gangs and firms as a substitute. It may look like senseless drinking and mindless violence, but there is honour there.

England glad to complete final auditions for Portugal

The only alternative, in my mind, is for Sven-Goran Eriksson, who tends to be a cautious coach, to drop Wayne Rooney, who looks a little short of match fitness, and play five men in midfield. Eriksson said before the tournament in Manchester that he would start against Japan and Iceland with his preferred Euro 2004 opening line-up and everyone seems to have taken him at face value. There could, however, be a bit of kidology at work. Managers are normally reluctant to reveal their line-ups until shortly before kick-off and even then, at times, the names have to be dragged out of them. So why would Sven want to reveal his team and his system to the French 12 days in advance? I don’t think he is that daft so can only assume he is playing games. As for Lampard playing in the holding role, I think Sven just wanted to have a look.

‘We are ready for France’
Telegraph.co.uk – May 6, 2004
“Obviously I’m close to the end but I still have fun training and playing football. “However, Dessailly admitted he does not know what type of reaction to expect from the French crowd. He was jeered by fans during the FIFA Centenary match against Brazil last month after being banned for elbowing Monaco’s Fernando Morientes in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final in April. “The public is always right. If I have made a mistake I want to apologise. But I don’t think I did something terrible,” he said… “Germany are clearly the favourites. You can’t beat a Ferrari with a little car. “Russia were the first team to arrive for Euro 2004 when they touched down at Faro airport in the south of the country yesterday afternoon. Their squad will be based in Vilamoura on the Algarve and will open their Group A campaign against Spain on Saturday. Following their nation’s defeat in the play-offs, Wales fans may be hoping that it’s a case of first in, first out.

If I am picked for the full [national] team, that’s great, but if I only play in the Under-21s, well that’s OK as well, and I will play my hardest for them. “Over the moonIt has been a patchy season for both player and club, but the possibility of glory still exists for both. “We maybe have not played so well as last season but if we took fourth place in the league, won the UEFA Cup, and I could play in EURO 2004™ in my own country, then that would be a great year,” said Viana. Inside Soccer: FIFA president draws a blank

“When you play cards or any other game, there’s always a winner and a loser,” he said. “We should have the courage to introduce a final decision in every game of football. “Not surprisingly, the outcry was far reaching — ties are a part of soccer tradition. “Blatter gives lots of press conferences, and at times he has nothing to say,” said Julio Grondona, a FIFA vice president who also heads the Argentine FA. “We are not in the business of changing something that works. He must have been speaking in a moment of euphoria. “England’s Daily Mail summed it up best when it wrote, “Football has been listening to the 68-year-old Blatter — and his stranger than fiction ideas — for far too long… “It’ll stay forever in my heart, and I don’t want it to be tarnished. “Lippi added he’s retiring from club football, but he didn’t rule out a move to the Italian national team. Trapattoni’s contract ends after Euro 2004. “Who wouldn’t want that job?” he said. “I’ll be Italy’s No. 1 supporter on June 12 (the opening of Euro 2004), and if one day I’m called upon, I’ll be honored. “Under Lippi, Juve won the scudetto in 2002 and 2003.

Celtic not expecting U-turn
BBC News – May 4, 2004
Larsson, due to leave Celtic Park in the summer, this week announced his return to the Swedish national side ahead of Euro 2004. But Celtic boss O’Neill said: “I must say I wasn’t overly surprised when I heard about it. “As to whether it’s given us any hope I’d have to say it doesn’t. But we wish Henrik the best of luck nonetheless. ”

Larsson wants a fresh challenge at the end of his career after seven successful years with this season’s Scottish champions.

RTÉ Sport: Larsson set for Euro 2004
rte.ie – May 6, 2004
The Celtic striker announced last week he would make himself available for the summer tournament after a campaign led by UEFA president Lennart Johansson. Larsson has scored 24 goals in 72 games for his country but has not played for the Scandinavians since a Euro 2004 qualifier against Hungary last April. Joint coaches Lars Lagerback and Tommy Soderberg have named 20 foreign-based players in the party with only Djurgarden keeper Andreas Isaksson, Helsingborg right-back Erik Wahlstedt and Halmstad midfielder Mikael Nilsson plying their trade in the domestic Allsvenskan. There was no place for Norwich striker Mathias Svensson nor Hansa Rostock duo Rade Prica and Magnus Arvidsson. The squad is subject to change as three players are struggling for fitness – Southampton defender Michael Svensson, Celtic centre-half Johan Mjallby and Aston Villa striker Marcus Allback will be given a chance to prove their fitness ahead of the tournament. It may just be that the best team won't triumph – but the fittest will. We sent along givemefootball's Rehab Room correspondent, Ian Clarkson to talk to Lilleshall Hall's Sports scientist expert, John Brewer about the importance of keeping fit at this late stage of the campaign. QWHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE FIT AT THIS STAGE OF THE CAMPAIGN?

AThe last thing you want to do is reach the end of 90 minutes and find that you haven't done enough training to cover your fitness. With the play-offs, FA Cup Final and Euro 2004 all looming it is likely that the 30 minutes of extra time will be the most important period of the season for the team.

Results go flat for pub giants
Edinburgh Evening News – May 6, 2004
Chairman Mike Mealey says trading across its estate was “stable” compared with the “deterioration in sales reported by some of our competitors, particularly in the high streets”. Along with choosing to eschew the high street, Mr Ross says Belhaven has also avoided “high fashion cafe bar” operations, nightclubs or pubs in more deprived areas, and believes those companies which are in the most difficulty are the ones which have chosen these sectors. “I’m not really surprised at the warnings – it all comes down to common sense. To take the example of Renfield Street and Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, these have become streets full of pubs. Before there used to be shops and offices, which might have brought people into town, so we have a double-whammy effect. ” Belhaven has about 230 pubs, of which 90 are run as managed houses, with the remainder leased. “About 60 per cent of our pubs profit comes from the managed estate – even though there are less units they are bigger and generate more bottom line profit,” says Mr Ross.

SOCCER: Ron wants Frank in Qatar
U.TV – May 5, 2004
Rangers have stalled on putting a new deal on the table and he has revealed he is “70% certain“ to accept a two-year contract to join his brother in Qatar – a move Ronald wholeheartedly backs. Ronald said: “My chances of Euro 2004 are now zero I guess. But Frank will go and I must say he`s in great shape. “He definitely has some years left in him. “I have enjoyed working again with him in the last few months, not only on the pitch but off it with the family. “Frank is playing out of his skin… But Frank will go and I must say he`s in great shape. “He definitely has some years left in him. “I have enjoyed working again with him in the last few months, not only on the pitch but off it with the family. “Frank is playing out of his skin. He is playing at a high level and has shown real quality. “I am pleased he is enjoying his football again. He will probably make a decision about his future soon but I would encourage him to follow me to Qatar.

Maldini may return for Euro finals

Trapattoni has also hinted he may try to persuade 37-year-old Roberto Baggio to postpone his retirement The ‘divine ponytail’ was one of Italy’s more impressive performers in their 1-1 draw in the friendly with Spain last Wednesday.

Totti issues ultimatum to Roma
CNN International – May 5, 2004
The Italian playmaker also told Gazzetta dello Sport that Real Madrid were his preferred choice of club if he does decide to leave. "My priority is to remain here but we need a competitive team, capable of fighting for the national title," said Totti, who has spent his entire career with Roma. Totti said the club had until after the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal to improve their squad and named four players — France’s Philippe Mexes, Marek Jankulowski of the Czech Republic, Dutchman Edgar Davids and Inter striker Christian Vieri — as suitable targets. "I want to know, by my return from Portugal, what is exactly happening and who is staying, who is leaving because it will be too late for me to do anything after that. "Totti said he would not stay in Italy, out of respect to Roma, if he did decide to go. "In my mind I’m only thinking of Real Madrid," he added. As a result, FIFA instituted a continental rotation for the World Cup and designated Africa for 2010. Back in the news: In the same week that David Beckham was ranked the highest compensated soccer player on the planet at $27 million in annual salary and sponsorships, speculation that he might be on the move again refused to dissipate. Reasons Beckham might be leaving Real Madrid: He did not renew the lease on his Madrid mansion, his playing form has slipped in the second half of the season, wife Victoria and their kids have remained in England, the Spanish have grown weary of the constant media spotlight on his extramarital activity, and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is not afraid of spending his billions. Reasons he might stay: He says he's looking to buy a home in Madrid, Real Madrid's endorsement contract with Adidas has an eight-figure bonus if Beckham is on the roster, there won't be enough bidders to drive the price high enough for Real to sell, and Beckham doesn't want to give up on his Spanish adventure so quickly. The transfer window officially re-opens May 17. ONLY IN SOCCERGermany loves sausages, no doubt… ONLY IN SOCCERGermany loves sausages, no doubt. Bild newspaper showed the faces of the starting 11 with hot dogs in place of their bodies. Next to it was a picture of coach Rudi Voeller with the headline: "Rudi's Wurst Troop. The terrible, embarrassing, disgraceful 5-1 defeat in Romania has ruined the good name of German soccer.
