INSIDE AFRICA: In 2010, Africa Will Host Football’s World Cup For…
CNN International – May 8, 2004
(END VIDEO CLIP) Welcome to INSIDE AFRICA. In 2010, Africa will host football’s World Cup for the first time. The world football governing body, FIFA, promised the event to the continent after South Africa narrowly lost the 2006 bid to Germany. Five African countries are vying for the honor of hosting the prestigious event. The winner will be announced next Saturday. Ahead of that, FIFA has issued its report on the readiness of the countries, and named South Africa, Egypt and Morocco as the top contenders. So, just how prepared are they? First, a look at South Africa.

‘SA can host an excellent World Cup event’
Independent Online – May 10, 2004
That will give the South African organising committee much encouragement – although after the lessons learned in 2000 it is taking nothing for granted. Danny Jordaan, who is running the South Africa 2010 bid, said he did not expect a sympathy vote. “We know that the Fifa executive committee is not going to decide that because we lost by one vote for 2006, we have a right to get 2010,” he said. “Instead, they are going to look at this from a business point of view and that is why we are not expecting any sympathy, nor are we hoping for any,” Jordaan said. Instead, South Africa is banking on its infrastructure and says it is presenting Fifa with the best commercial opportunity to make the 2010 World Cup a financial success.

Comment: Scholes wrong to quit
manchesteronline.co.uk – May 8, 2004
Sooner or later, England will make the breakthrough that the entire country has been waiting for since the World Cup of 1966. They will win a major international trophy because they have got too many quality players for that not to happen. Responsibility That breakthrough could come in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The finals of that competition are only two years down the line with the qualifying games due to start within the next few months. The next two years could be the very best in Scholes’s entire career. He will still be only 31 when the 2006 World Cup is over. Is it too much to expect Scholes to give two more years to his country? I don’t believe it is… The finals of that competition are only two years down the line with the qualifying games due to start within the next few months. The next two years could be the very best in Scholes’s entire career. He will still be only 31 when the 2006 World Cup is over. Is it too much to expect Scholes to give two more years to his country? I don’t believe it is. Still plenty of time after 2006, surely, to be the husband and father he wants to be to his wife and children. I wonder how Scholes would feel if England come home from Germany in two years’ time with the World Cup and he has taken no part in that triumph? No, I don’t have to wonder. He will feel cheated out of what would have been one of the great moments of his life.

Are England in safe hands?
Telegraph.co.uk – May 9, 2004
In such times of trouble, England need some leaders, lions rather than lambs, but little dynamic direction is offered by either the coach Sven-Goran Eriksson or the captain David Beckham. Yet with a cautious coach, a captain suddenly lacking a sense of responsibility and a flawed keeper in David James, England could easily lose. Famous Poles who have haunted England in the past, Wlodzimierz Lubanski and Jan Tomaszewski, will be in town, feted figures adding to the noisily expressed local hopes that Jerzy Dudek and company can embarrass celebrated visitors. Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Northern Ireland has triggered a huge run on tickets for the Slaski Stadium. A bear-pit awaits England… Some of his coaches, like Steve McClaren and Ray Clemence, were there silently offering support. Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA’s director of football development, stood in a corner, partly to back Eriksson but also to gauge the temperature of the heat rising around England’s head coach. Brooking is the obvious caretaker should the Swede receive the terminal turnip treatment. As Eriksson spoke, the sound of laughter from his players playing table-tennis filtered into the room, setting an awkward tone and hinting that certain individuals were ensconced in the comfort zone. As an FA official discreetly closed the door, Eriksson voiced his opinion that his squad possessed the personnel and passion to get England back on track. “We have famous players working very hard, trying to achieve the maximum for England,” he said.

BBC SPORT | Football | African | Leroy considers contract
BBC News – May 10, 2004
Leroy, who has also spent time coaching Cameroon and Senegal, says that he has to sort out his current contract with a French television station. The 57-year-old has been the favourite to take over from Englishman Mick Wadsworth, whose contract was not renewed after the Simbas were knocked out of the African Cup of Nations. Leroy’s first big task would be to get the DR Congo ready for their 2006 World Cup and African Cup of Nations qualifier in Group Two away to Uganda on 5 June. South Africa, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Cape Verde will make up the rest of Group 2.

That love affair with Sven is wearing a little thin
Telegraph.co.uk – May 8, 2004
Eriksson’s substitutions and his tactical choreography took momentum away when he should have been putting it in. The question many of us came home with was: If `Big Phil’ Scolari had been managing England in that quarter-final and Eriksson had been in charge of the hosts, who would have won?Hack away all the prurience, and Eriksson’s insistence on treating every building he walks into as a potential harem (no moral judgment intended but it’s true), and what you see is the same old issue burning a hole in the FA’s pocket. Is the current England manager deserving of £3-4 million a year? Is this a sensible use of resources? Even more saliently, can we be confident Eriksson will realise in time for the 2006 World Cup that international tournaments are not the same as the Italian league he won with Lazio? Tactically, he has started to look dated – a conservative Nineties Man, unable to adapt. While Eriksson steps over the executive bodies, it’s accurate to say that the FA’s reputation is in shreds. Not because there are office romances inside Soho Square or because lovers are apparently passed on. That happens in all corporations. No: the problem is that some of the most powerful men in English football apparently tried to oust an England manager through a cynical and clumsy plot.

She also picked up shots at the 11th and 14th, adding another birdie at the par-five 15th. A second bogey followed at the 16th but safe pars at the closing two holes averted any threat of the lead slipping through her fingers. World number one Annika Sorenstam finished in a share of eighth place with compatriot Helen Alfredsson and American Pat Hurst seven shots adrift. It was Mother’s Day in America and Pak said: “I told my mom, ‘I hope I have a gift for you with a win,’ but I
wasn’t too sure. ”

Her latest victory ensures her of a place in the Women’s Golf Hall of Fame when she becomes available in 2008 after completing her 10th LPGA campaign. “It means a lot,” the 26-year-old said.

BBC News – May 8, 2004
Paul has always had a very unusual technique and one that can and has fallen apart under pressure – when he’s good he’s one of the best, but when he’s off he’s awful. Thirteen years ago he was one of Europe’s key players at the Ryder Cup in Kiawah Island, winning both his games, but his last Tour win was in 1995 in France – since then it has been downhill. But he is a bloke with a lot of guts, as he showed when he went back to Qualifying school to win his card, which is a brave thing to do. Sunday will be a massive day for him; the start will be critical. Paul has to take it easy and not try to force anything – if he starts picking up a shot or two it could get to him. Overall, the more I think about it, 11 under doesn’t seem like such a bad score.

BBC SPORT | Golf | Woods forges ahead
BBC News – May 8, 2004
Woods had eight birdies and two bogeys to reach nine under, two ahead of Notah Begay, Arron Oberholser and first-round leader Kirk Triplett. In-form Fijian Vijay Singh, who is challenging for the world number spot, shot a 70 to rest on six under par. Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson are in the group on four under. Woods struggled off the tee in the first round but had no such problems on day two as he posted his lowest score since a final-round 64 at the Nissan Open in February.

BBC SPORT | Golf | Curtis heads for Wentworth
BBC News – May 10, 2004
It will be his second appearance over the West Course after making the semi-finals of the HSBC World Match Play Championship last October. “I love coming over to Britain and I am looking forward to returning to Wentworth,” said the American. “It’s a great test and I love the challenge it presents. Every hole demands your complete attention.

Greece brought back to earth
Telegraph.co.uk – May 9, 2004
The Albanians caught their northern neighbours cold with two goals in the opening 10 minutes of the Group Two qualifier and went on to win 2-1, sending their fans into a frenzy as they celebrated with fireworks in Tirana. Back in Greece, where Albanians are the largest immigrant group, the result sparked trouble with one man stabbed to death and seven injured in clashes between rival fans on Saturday night… Portugal, beaten by the Greeks in the Euro 2004 final, kicked off with a 2-0 win over Latvia in Riga in Group Three. Cristiano Ronaldo and Pauleta scored in a two-minute second-half spell. The Russian Football Union dismissed reports yesterday that national coach Georgy Yartsev had resigned after the 1-1 draw with Slovakia in Moscow in the same group. Robert Vittek equalised three minutes from time for Slovakia. France, who just over two years ago were world and European champions, are proving those days are well behind them following the international retirements of the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Lilian Thuram and Bixente Lizarazu. Under new coach Raymond Domenech they were held to a 0-0 draw by Israel in Paris in Group Four. Italy, who also have a new coach in Marcello Lippi, managed a 2-1 Group Five win over Norway in Palermo thanks to an 80th-minute winner from Luca Toni.

Drama as Keane plans quick return
Telegraph.co.uk – May 9, 2004
As Irish observers have come to expect, there was an element of intrigue surrounding Keane’s arrival in Dublin to join the squad for today’s trip to Basle. Keane somehow managed to play with two fractured ribs before the injury was discovered and has been out of action since Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Norwich City on Aug 21. Initially, the club said he would probably return to action in mid-September, but Keane has come back ahead of schedule… Cyprus were so poor it was little more than a training session, with the main bonuses being no yellow cards and much-needed match practice for the returning from injury pair Robbie Keane, who is now joint-top Ireland goalscorer of all-time with Niall Quinn on 21, and Damien Duff. Even Keane had to take second billing to Andy Reid, the man of the match. The Nottingham Forest midfielder has taken to international football with the greatest of ease. On the field, Reid gives little away, a deceptively strong forward who can beat opponents on either side. He also has quite a shot. After Clinton Morrison had broken his 809-minute international scoring drought in the 33rd minute by heading home Duff’s centre, Reid made it 2-0 with an absolute beauty. The outstanding Andy O’Brien chased what seemed a lost cause to retrieve the ball which Graham Kavanagh, who will be replaced by Roy Keane in Basle, played to Reid just outside the Cyprus penalty area.

Celtic manager Martin O?Neill has said that he is interested in signing the 32-year-old former AC Milan and Barcelona midfielder with a view to strengthening his side to take them beyond the group stage of next season?s Champions League. Arime told the Scottish Sun. ?In my opinion, it would be better for Rivaldo to move to Celtic rather than Bolton because they are a bigger club. ?Celtic will be playing Champions League football next season and are very well known as they have very passionate fans. ?Rivaldo is still free and available for anyone who wants him. He has offers from England and several countries in Europe, Asia and Saudi Arabia. ?He is aware that the majority of the leagues in Europe are almost over and is not in a hurry to close a deal with anyone. ?When I have an offer on my table, I will pass it on to him.
