ESPN – Jul 15, 2004
They struck a deal with their wives. They’d train for a year and re-evaluate their goals after their first event of the 2002 season — the World Cup in Augsburg, Germany. It was the second race in the World Cup series, but because Augsburg was also the sight of the 2003 World Championship, an Olympic qualifying race, the event drew a full field. Jacobi and Taylor’s eighth-place finish in the semifinal earned them a spot in the 10-boat final, after which their times would be combined to determine their overall finish. Their last race boosted them to a fourth-place finish, one second off the podium and high enough to continue pursuing a berth on the 2004 Olympic team. The performance of that day, however, belonged to the Hochschorner twins, Peter and Pavol, who had won the Olympic gold medal in 2000 at the age of 21. The Slovakian brothers turned a 10th-place finish in the semifinals into a first place finish overall with a torrid run in the final.

Russia coach Yartsev wins reprieve
CNN – Jul 13, 2004
The win was the first Russia’s success in the European championships finals since the Euro 1988 semifinal clash against Italy, which the then Soviet squad won 2-0 to reach the final in which they lost to the Netherlands. Yartsev signed a new contract with the RFU in January. According to the terms of the deal Yartsev will coach Russia until the end of the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign. The contract would be automatically extended until the end of the 2006 World Cup finals if Russia manage to qualify.

Onandi Lowe charged
Jamaica Gleaner – Jul 15, 2004
Thirty year-old Lowe, who was released by First Division club Coventry City at the end of last season, was arrested on 14 April along with a woman from London. Both are due to appear before Wellingborough Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 3. The charging of Lowe also confirmed the worst fears of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) – that the player would not be of service to his country during the qualifiers. VERY SUPPORTIVE During Lowe’s troubles the JFF was very supportive of the player and even assisted him in securing legal representation… The charging of Lowe also confirmed the worst fears of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) – that the player would not be of service to his country during the qualifiers. VERY SUPPORTIVE During Lowe’s troubles the JFF was very supportive of the player and even assisted him in securing legal representation. However, they earned the ire of some football supporters when they opted to leave the prolific striker out of the team for friendlies against Nigeria and the Republic of Ireland, as well as Jamaica’s World Cup qualifiers against Haiti last month. Even then technical director Carl Brown was holding out hope that he would have been able to call upon Lowe if not for Jamaica’s next game against the United States of America on August 18, then soon after. “What has happened now is that we have more options. It really is good to look at what we have to choose from,” said Brown who named nine forwards. They are Marlon King, Damani Ralph, Ricardo Fuller, Lowe (providing his situation is sorted out), Deon Burton, Fabian Taylor, Kevin Lisbie, Barry Hayles and Jason Euell.

Stoichkov to coach Bulgaria
BBC News – Jul 15, 2004
Stoichkov, whose only previous coaching experience was with Barcelona’s strikers last season, agreed a two-year deal with the option of another two. Stoichkov, 38, replaces Plamen Markov, who refused to sign a new contract after his contract expired on 30 June. Boris Mihailov, of the Bulgarian Football Union, said: “We chose him because of his personality and name. He will get the respect of the players. ”

Mihailov added: “It’s a risk but he will have assistants and he has great experience as a player. ”

Markov decided to stand down after Bulgaria lost all three
group matches at Euro 2004 in Portugal last month. They were thumped 5-0 by Sweden in their opening game, before losing
2-0 to Denmark and 2-1 to Italy after conceding a stoppage-time goal… Stoichkov scored six goals for Bulgaria in their run to the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup. He managed 37 in his 83 caps, and also enjoyed success at Barcelona, helping them to four successive Spanish league titles in the early 1990s and the 1992 European Cup. Bulgaria begin their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign in Iceland on 4 September, and also have Croatia, Malta, Sweden and Hungary in their group.

Unhappy with displayThe executive committee of the Football Union of Russia (RFS) met Yartsev today and stated that the national team’s performance at UEFA EURO 2004™ was “unsatisfactory”. However, for the first time in Russia’s football history, the RFS will keep faith with a coach after a major finals tournament. Friendly coming upAccording to the RFS president, Dr Vyacheslav Koloskov, Yartsev accepted the criticism of the national team. Barker in frame for Malawi
BBC News – Jul 13, 2004
The Football Association of Malawi (Fam) plan to name the new coach before the next round of 2006 World Cup qualifying games, which will be played in September. Fam officials said they have started negotiations with the coach that led South Africa to victory at the 1996 African Cup of Nations. Barker had been approached to take charge of the national team two years ago but was unable to reach an agreement with Fam. Denmark’s Kim Splidsboel and Englishman Allan Gillet – managers of the national team in the recent past – are also in the running for the job. “The three men are showing interest and whoever agrees to our conditions will have the job,” said Fam spokesperson MacCollins Chibvunde.

A war of words between Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the Thai players has hardly helped. Following the trend set by Japan, South Korea left inspirational captain Yoo Sang-chul and Song Chong-gug out of their Asian Cup squad, selecting them for Olympic duty. Olympic priority: Worried that new coach Jo Bonfrere would have insufficient time to prepare for the Asian Cup, the Korea Football Association shifted its priorities to Athens. The former Nigeria coach faces a difficult test when South Korea take on dangerous Jordan in their Group B opener in Jinan on July 19. But South Korea, who reached the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup, should comfortably see off Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. With players such as Ahn Jung-hwan, Park Ji-sung and Seol Ki-Hyeon available to Bonfrere, South Korea could even win their first Asian Cup title since 1960 if the Dutchman can restore their fragile confidence. BBC News – Jul 14, 2004
Stambouli signed a two-year contract with the Tunis-based side on Wednesday. The 42-year-old takes over after the Tunisia Football Federation refused to release national assistant team coach Nabil Maaloul for the post. The French coach was previously in charge of the Malian national team but stood down in March after failing to agree a contract extension with the West Africans’ Football Federation… He also guided Mali into the group stages of 2006 World Cup and Nations Cup qualifying. Club Africain fans will hope that Stambouli can lead their team back to former glories. The Tunisian side won the African Cup in 1991, when beating Congolese side Nakivubo Villa SC 6-2 on aggregate. After leaving his Mali post, Stambouli was linked with national team posts with Algeria, Egypt as well as the Club Africain role he now occupies.

“Something happened in the ’60s and ’70s. We didn’t reach out enough. Football and basketball became more viable options,” he said. He has pushed owners to increase minority employment. “We’ve had good success in front offices, not as good in some areas as we should, certainly in field managers and others we’ve made a lot of progress, but we (have) work to do,” he said. “This may be another case where baseball was too passive in that era where you should not have been passive. ”Selig remained hopeful that baseball can start a World Cup in 2006 but admitted the initial tournament could be delayed… “We’ve had good success in front offices, not as good in some areas as we should, certainly in field managers and others we’ve made a lot of progress, but we (have) work to do,” he said. “This may be another case where baseball was too passive in that era where you should not have been passive. ”Selig remained hopeful that baseball can start a World Cup in 2006 but admitted the initial tournament could be delayed. “We are going to run out of time unless we get this done quickly,” he said. Egypt gets Fifa reprieve
BBC News – Jul 14, 2004
The Egyptian Football Association (Efa), currently functioning with a transitional board, was to have conducted elections in September. Fifa’s decision follows a plea made by the Efa’s temporary
board requesting more time to put their affairs in order. Headed by sports journalist Essam Abdel-Moniem, the transitional board
was appointed in March by former Minister of Youth and Sports Dr Alie El Din Hilal. Their appointment came following the resignation of the previous board
led by General Dahshoury Harb, after Egypt’s failure to get past the group
stages of the 2004 Cup of Nations in Tunisia… “We have asked Fifa to extend our time in control of Egyptian football,” Viken Djezmedian, member of the transitional board, told BBC Sport. “A new minister of youth and sports was appointed and the ministry
will draw up the regulations for the elections process very soon. ”

Djezmedian also said they told Fifa it would be difficult to hold elections at a time the Egyptian national team would be engaged in a crucial 2006 World Cup qualifying match against Cameroon. “Fifa’s decision will grant stability to our national team, which is only fair.

Inside Soccer: Rooney drops the ball over life story
nwsource.com – Jul 13, 2004
The young England superstar, who plays for Everton, the “other” Liverpool team, sparked controversy in the city last week when he sold his life story — all 18 years of it — to that beacon of journalism, The Sun. He reportedly received $450,000 for baring his soul. Selling his story wasn’t the problem — it’s commonplace in England. But The Sun has been an object of hate in Liverpool since its inaccurate reporting of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989… ‘ ”
Interesting decision. Germany can only go up, while few predict Greece will come close to matching its success in Portugal as the World Cup looms. And as the host team at World Cup 2006, Germany will probably lift its game. GUNNER GO? Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger repeatedly said last year he didn’t want to leave Highbury. That’s not what he was hinting last week. True, he wasn’t about to abandon his contract at the London club to coach Germany, but Wenger made no guarantees about his long-term future. “Our season is due to start in four weeks’ time, and in any case my club would not let me go,” said Wenger, whose contract expires in August 2005.

The executive board members of the HNS selected Kranjčar ahead of Martin Novoselac, the other remaining candidate, who will serve as his assistant. “It is a challenging job for any coach,” he was quoted as saying of taking over the German team. The DFB has had a hard time finding a new coach after Rudi Voeller resigned on 24 June after Germany’s first round elimination at Euro 2004. The new man must have plenty of experience in order to reshape the team and turn it into a title contender for the 2006 World Cup amid huge expectations from the German public. DPA

Lazaroni. takes over as national coach

takes over as national coach

It has been confirmed. Former technical director of the Brazilian national team Sebastiao Lazaroni will be contracted to the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) as head coach of the senior national team, a release from the JFF stated yesterday. And it has also been confirmed that current technical director Carl Brown, who was appointed to the post in December, 2001, will remain TD of the national programme, except the senior team. In discussions with JFF boss Crenston Boxhill last week, the release indicated that Lazaroni agreed to terms “with the qualification for the World Cup finals in Germany as his primary objective”. Boxhill has also met with Brown. “In a collaborative approach”, the release noted, Brown had agreed to be “a member of Lazaroni’s support staff which would prepare the Reggae Boyz”… ”
According to the JFF, after discussions with all parties concerned, “an agreement has been reached that is in the best interest of Jamaica’s Red Stripe Journey to Germany 2006 campaign”. Lazaroni guided Brazil to the 1989 Copa America title, a tournament where the strike force of Romario and Bebeto (who later teamed up to win the 1994 World Cup) came to the fore in overcoming Uruguay, 2-0, in the final. In 1990 Brazil were knocked out in the second round of the World Cup by arch rivals Argentina, courtesy of a Claudio Caniggia goal. From five internationals, Jamaica lost four and drew one, failing to score a single goal. In fact, in his first game on Sunday, May 14, 2000, not only did Jamaica lose, 1-0, to Panama in Montego Bay, but the island’s proud six-year unbeaten record dating back to 1994 was also lost. A 0-0 tie with Romania followed in Fort Lauderdale, then a 3-0 defeat to Colombia in New Jersey.

"He is very, very competent and his arrival is good news for the new generation… " "Domenech comes from the national coaching body DTN and is not under the influence of any pressure group. I’m sure he will make a success of it and I send him my best wishes," he said.
