Let’s Make it a World Class-Fabio

At the time Nigeria had an Hungarian coach and a Yugoslav, they were about the best in the Olympics Games. By the time we moved on to hiring Germans and Dutch as coaches, there was an attraction also. Germany still lay claim to a solid world football recognition, the current slide not withstanding. As for the Dutch, their performance in few World Cup speaks of their football culture. Their concept is total football. And this has been widely accepted especially in the third world. The French came into the picture rather lately… “Whoever is in charge of the contract this time around, either the NFA, Ministry of sports or the government should look critically into the contract procedures. It can be on short term or long term basis. A short term contract may terminate after the World Cup 2006. A long term contract will go beyond the 2006 perhaps till 2010. But the problem here is that coaching is the most perishable job. You don’t have to be successful to retain it. We have seen many examplesof coaches winning and yet been unrecognised or fired.

Germany 2006: NFA Considers Troussier for Eagles
This Day – This Day (subscription) – Jul 22, 2004
The nomadic Frenchman is available for the picking after Qatar ended his contract on Tuesday following the patchy run of the Qatari national team in the ongoing Asian Cup and the 2006 World Cup qualifiers. The NFA Technical committee will resume sitting in Abuja today in continuation of its search for a technical adviser to prosecute the Eagles campaign for the 2006 World Cup. THISDAYSports learnt yesterday that Troussier’s contact in Nigeria has been asked to talk out the former coach of Japan if he would be keen to take a second chance at the Eagles job. The technical committee headed by Mr. David Suleiman has already short-listed six coaches including Bobby Robson, Jean Amodou Tigana, and Alain Giresse as likely candidates for the job… He was fired after falling out with the Sports Ministry despite securing a place in the 1998 World Cup for Nigeria. After his exit from Nigeria, Troussier subsequently bounced back into international reckoning with a string of successful stints with Burkina Faso, South Africa and Japan.

East Bengal, Bagan post contrasting wins
Hindu – Jul 22, 2004
On the other hand East Bengal, having lot of new faces in the side, squandered a number of scoring opportunities before surrendering to the defensive ploy of the railwaymen. East Bengal, playing consecutive draws, now has eight points from four matches while Mohun Bagan stole a march over its archrival tallying 10 points from its quota of four matches. Constantine exudes confidence

The National football coach, Stephen Constantine, feels that his players will buck themselves up for an improved performance in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against the continental giant, Japan. With the chances of a win in the LG Cup in Vietnam getting diminished owing to the National team’s dismal showing in the qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup, Constantine spoke of “putting behind the recent failures” and focus on finding ways of taming the Japanese, who play their return match here at the Salt Lake Stadium on September 8. Constantine said that the newly appointed five-member selection committee will strengthen the process of selecting the best available talents for the coming tie versus Japan, where the team will be going all out to salvage the pride. There will be every effort to make the best of preparations and the process is scheduled to start here at SAI Eastern Centre from August 2, the coach informed. — Our Sports Reporter

IranKicks – Jul 22, 2004
If the Al Ittihad player does not recover in time, van der Lem is expected to stick with 19-year-old Tariq Al Hargan, who is the sixth choice keeper for his country. First choice keeper Mohammed Al Daeyea, who has played in three World Cups, was injured during the team?s pre-Asian Cup training camp in Malaysia last month and was ruled out of the tournament. Both Mohammed Al Khojeli, who deputised for Al Daeyea during qualification for the 2002 World Cup, and Mohammed Al Sharifi, who played for Saudi in a 2006 World Cup qualifier in February, did not travel to China due to injury. Of the three keepers in the Saudi squad ? Zaid, Mansour Al Naje and Al Hargan ? only Al Hargan is fit. "

Now who was it here that kept saying 3 keepers are too many and Iran should go to Asian Cup with 2 keepers?Mahbod07-22-2004, 12:52 PMwell man. if you were called up to play in a team like that wouldn’t you be "injured" too? :DvBulletin® v3.

FIDE to revamp World Cup
Hindu – Jul 22, 2004
Ummer Koya, who has been authorised to come up with a new name and format to replace the World Cup at the FIDE presidential board meeting held at Tripoli on July 11 and 12, told The Hindu here on Tuesday that the World championship held in Libya recently was the last tournament in that name organised by the world body. “In games like football, the team which wins the World Cup is regarded as the World champion. FIDE has decided to adopt the same system for chess. I’ve been given time until the next general assembly to be held at Mallorca, Spain, in October, to devise an alternative for the earlier World Cup,” he said. India’s Viswanathan Anand had in fact won both the editions of the World Cup in its original format, first in Shenyang in 2000 and then at Hyderabad in 2002. “India had actually made a bid to host the next World Cup, since Anand is the defending champion, but I was informed that a new format would now come in place… Koya added that India was interested in hosting the World Cup in the new format. “We want to conduct as many international tournaments as possible. The World team championship next year and the World Youth championship in 2006 are among the major events we are going to host. ”

Who Coaches Super Eagles
This Day – This Day (subscription) – Jul 24, 2004
The Nigeria’s group which comprises of Angola, Gabon, Zimbabwe, Algeria and Rwanda was considered fair where the country should emerge with little burden. However, with three matches gone, the Super Eagles are yet to be convincing. Although Nigeria leads with six points, there is a general belief that the likes of Angola, Algeria and Zimbabwe are threats that cannot be ignored. Algeria drew its first match in Algiers with Angola but seems to have woken up to the challenges… In the past, names have been mentioned and coaches have been contacted and with the exception of few in the deep past, all others left in controversial circustances. Manfred Hoener took Nigeria to Seoul ’88 and after him came Clemens Westerhof, Nigeria’s most successful foreign coach. He qualified Nigeria for its first ever World Cup in 1994 and left immediately after Nigeria was ousted in the second round by Italy. After him came an endless list, but it was his apostle, Bonfrere Jo who moved closer his record by winning the Atlanta ’96 Olympic gold and perhaps Philippe Troussier who qualified the Nation for the 1998 World Cup in France but never reached the venue with the team. ‘Difficult decision’”This has been my most difficult decision since I decided to leave [Akademisk Boldklub], as I love playing in the national team,” the Panathinaikos FC defender said. “But you have to stop some day, and I have chosen to stop now, while I am still a first-choice central defender and captain. “Forward thinkingThe 34-year-old added: “I might have been able to play another six months or maybe a year, but in the national team we operate in intervals of two years, and at my age two years is too long to look ahead. “Sand retiresHenriksen, who made his international debut against Scotland in March 1998, was an ever-present for Denmark during UEFA EURO 2004™, and his retirement follows that of vice-captain Ebbe Sand, who stepped down after the quarter-final defeat by the Czech Republic… “Forward thinkingThe 34-year-old added: “I might have been able to play another six months or maybe a year, but in the national team we operate in intervals of two years, and at my age two years is too long to look ahead. “Sand retiresHenriksen, who made his international debut against Scotland in March 1998, was an ever-present for Denmark during UEFA EURO 2004™, and his retirement follows that of vice-captain Ebbe Sand, who stepped down after the quarter-final defeat by the Czech Republic.
