FA deserve red card for own goal with Sven
Telegraph.co.uk – Jul 31, 2004
Until Euro 2004, and even in the immediate aftermath of England’s quarter-final defeat by Portugal, the FA mantra was that Sven was the only man capable of leading England to the World Cup finals in two years’ time and, naturally, waltzing away with the trophy. No amount of criticism from the press, club managers and former footballers could persuade them otherwise. Could they finally have had their fingers forced out of their ears by a lone voice of criticism from within, from no less a figure than their newly appointed director of football, Trevor Brooking? Though he never mentioned Sven by name, his autopsy on Euro 2004 could not have been more scathing about the team tactics. So, uncomfortably for the FA, either their England manager or their latest appointment is hopelessly out of touch with the modern game. Few people would regret the passing of Eriksson who, publicly and privately, has shown himself to be a devious little man and who, on the international football stage, has proved to be not the giant we were promised but a pygmy and even his high-lift shoes cannot alter that. Even so, the FA would appear to be on very thin legal ice if they believe they can not only sack him for bringing the game and their association into disrepute, but deny him £14 million owed on his contract on the grounds that he misled them over an office affair. As we are told that this rests on a private conversation between Sven and one other member of the FA, I wish them luck trying to prove it in court.

Palios’ annus horribilis
BBC News – Aug 1, 2004
Rightly or wrongly, it also hamstrung Eriksson in his Euro 2004 selection, reinforcing any feelings he might have harboured that his employers were tying two hands behind his back. The FA’s hokey-cokey with Alan Smith was for more embarrassing than anything your dad might come up with at a wedding. In, out and shaken all about was Smith’s lot as the FA allowed him to be picked for England’s friendly against Denmark before tugging him out. Their laudable policy of not allowing anyone charged with a criminal offence to pull on an England shirt was negated by the inept handling of the incident. ZIPPY

To outsiders, the FA’s Soho Square HQ must resemble one of Nero’s noisier nights in. That perception has come about because of the FA’s ham-fisted handling of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s reported affair. A Watergate-style inquiry into who was at fault over the FA’s embarrassing U-turn has increased speculation that dark forces are at work with the intention of prising Eriksson out of office. Revelations in the News of the World that the FA was prepared to provide the newspaper with details of Eriksson’s alleged affair have done little to dispel this image.

Traditional powers flopped while Greece captured the hardware. Now, just mere weeks from the start of World Cup qualifying, Europe’s powerhouses are scrambling to recapture their form in hopes of righting the wrongs of this summer. Not everyone is going in the same direction, though… Marcelo Lippi, 66, takes over for Giovanni Trapattoni, 65. Lippi led Juventus to five Serie A titles and a Champions League crown. Italy’s patience should be wearing thin; it has not won a major championship since 1982. Spain: Longtime Spanish league coach Luis Aragones takes over after Spain failed to get out of Euro 2004’s first round. Aragones’ name has long been linked to the national team. As league coach, Aragones never won the league title but guided lesser sides to prominence. England: Sven-Goran Eriksson dodged bullets from media and fans and remained at England’s helm, but might not survive scandal.

Over half a million people are reported to have visited the country during the three week tournament, some 210,000 visitors more than usual. Not surprisingly the influx of football fans had a marked impact on hotel performance across the country. Osieck rejects offer to assist Klinsmann

Osieck was expected to provide the coaching experience Klinsmann lacks, having performed the same job for Beckenbauer, a coaching rookie before leading his country to the 1990 World Cup title

BERLIN – Reuters
Juergen Klinsmann is struggling as Germany coach even before being officially appointed. The former Germany captain, who wwas presented as Rudi Voeller’s successor on Thursday, has already fallen out with the man who was supposed to become his assistant. The 39-year-old, who was not the preferred candidate, has also been criticized for having no coaching experience and saying he wanted to continue living in the United States. Two days after announcing Klinsmann had agreed a two-year deal to coach the team he once graced, the German Football Association (DFB) said on Wednesday the man they wanted as his assistant, Holger Osieck, had turned down the job. The ruling body said Klinsmann and Osieck, who was head coach Franz Beckenbauer’s deputy during Germany’s 1990 World Cup-winning campaign, failed to agree on working together. It was not immediately known why Osieck, who has built a friendly relationship with Klinsmann over the years, has decided not to work with the 1990 World Cup-winning striker. But it seemed likely Osieck could not accept Klinsmann’s plans including forming a group of specialists around the team to deal with everything from tactics to psychology… Klinsmann, who has been living in the United States since ending his playing career in 1998, was surprisingly picked after Ottmar Hitzfeld and Otto Rehhagel turned down the job. Former Bayern Munich coach Hitzfeld, who was the favorite, said he needed more time with his family. Rehhagel decided to stay with Greece after guiding them to the Euro 2004 title. Short of options, the DFB turned to Klinsmann despite the fact he has never coached a club and had strongly criticized the ruling body, saying new structures were urgently needed. Klinsmann’s appointment surprised many, partly because the former Bayern and Tottenham Hotspur striker, who has been involved in sports marketing, lives in California with his wife and two children and loves the American way of life. With little time to waste before the 2006 World Cup on home soil and next month’s friendly against Austria coming up, the DFB wanted a quick, smooth solution. It has failed to come up with one.

PRE-SEASON MADNESS
Redissue – Jul 30, 2004
We will be bringing out Silvestre and Scholes for the game against AC Milan in New York. I understand the public want to see the stars and we do not want them to feel as if we take that lightly. “I had left those players at home to give them a rest after Euro 2004 and others out here have had injuries, but I do not think the American public have appreciated that situation. “We have had to take this step now for the sake of our reputation in the States. Last year we captured a lot of people’s minds with our football and we do not now want them to think we take them for granted. ” So by bowing to an ignorant American public we are now forced to abandon the pre-season plan to rest key players, and Fergie now tells us that he may have to rest the big guns for the Community Shield. “The key game really is what kind of team I have got to play against Arsenal.

The whole of Europe plays football, but there?s
only one nation that plays cricket. The English are not comfortable
playing spin on a turning track, especially if the opposition is bowling
googlies, and if you bring a googly into English soccer, you bamboozle
the whole of India. It seems this is what I did on June 19, when I
bolwed you that ball of the century. To refresh your memory,
I play that episode again:
Logic says England
should have won; magic ensured that two Zinedine Zidane goals in added
time at the end of the match gave France an incredible win. Beck, incredible Beck,
how could he miss that penalty! England are still very good and it looks
they?re going to go far in the tournament. For that, they?ll have to
work on the mental aspect… Here?s that googly which you couldn?t read: The square of any
prime number greater than 3 leaves a remainder of 1 when divided by 12. For England, Terry plays in shirt number 5, Beck in 7, Lampard in 11 and
Robinson in 13. If you have been watching Euro 2004, you know it. I know what you are thinking. I can
understand the anger that you are now trying to suppress, but seriously,
I expected you to show some sportsman?s spirit here. I know no one has
ever bowled a googly in English soccer before, but hey, there?s always
a first time for everything. Keep playing in your extra time.

Liverpool ground plans are cleared
CNN International – Jul 31, 2004
Parry flew back from Liverpool’s tour of the USA to lead the club’s application to the city council’s planning committee and that the new stadium will "help us compete with Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle and clubs further afield. ""This has been a momentous summer for Liverpool. It has been like a rollercoaster since May and the season has not even started yet," Parry told www. "I am delighted by the way Rafa Benitez is settling in and imposing his ideas, I am delighted by the way the boys are responding to his ideas and obviously delighted by the planning committee verdict. "All in all, we’ve had three great things to celebrate this summer so far; Rafa’s arrival, Stevie Gerrard deciding to stay and, now, the new stadium being given the green light… We wish him well as he begins his recovery," a Liverpool spokesman said. The 31-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Lens in 1999, missed over three months of last season with Achilles and knee problems. Smicer was part of the Czech Republic squad that reached the Euro 2004 semi-finals before losing to eventual winners Greece.

Rangers head for Moscow
Telegraph.co.uk – Jul 30, 2004
Nor, he conceded, was it the easiest. The pairing with CSKA Moscow in the final Champions League qualifying round was, instead, somewhere in the middle and McLeish can only hope that he and his players are not left stranded in no-man’s land when the competition proper begins in September. The Russians have still to eliminate PFC Neftchi but, after they drew 0-0 in Azerbaijan, Rangers’ Georgian defender Zurab Khizanishvili said: “There is no question CSKA will win this tie. ” He was equally confident that Rangers will prevail over two legs… In 1996, their coach Valeri Gassayev was in charge of Alani Vladikavkaz, who lost 10-3 on aggregate to Rangers. However, the Muscovites are likely to be made of sterner stuff. Striker Rolan Gusev was one of four players they provided for the Russian squad at Euro 2004. Another, Dmitri Kirchenko, scored the winner against eventual champions Greece. Rangers begin their league campaign four days before the first leg in Moscow while their opponents are already 18 matches into their season.

Butcher’s fear over England hooligans
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 1, 2004
“When you look at a lot of the trouble we’ve been involved in you can understand why countries don’t want that. There’s no way we should force them to be lumbered with England supporters behaving like that. “Butcher, a former England captain, remains a staunch patriot and is convinced that Eriksson’s squad has the potential to follow the Rugby World Cup success by winning Euro 2004, but only if the thugs can be kept at bay. He will be in Portugal in June as a match analyst for Radio 5 Live, but is unconvinced that the security forces there will be able to cope with troublemakers should England take part. “It’s going to be almost impossible to stop hooligans from following the team over there,” he said. “That is a major concern. I’ve travelled with these people and have seen them in action when they’ve wrecked stadiums… “I remember it was absolutely dreadful when we played Germany in Charleroi at Euro 2000. It was really scary, even for me. It’s not something you want to see happen but there’s got to be a major police enforcement out there. Their security system must be second to none. “As well as England, you have Holland, Germany, Spain, France and Italy all there. It could be a wonderful festival of football or it could be carnage. “As someone who represented England at three World Cups, Butcher is praying that the current side are at least allowed the opportunity to fulfil their potential in June.

Shepherd considers £2m Butt a bargain
Telegraph.co.uk – Jul 30, 2004
He is a good player but there is always another car on a different lot; he’s not the only right-back in the world. “Newcastle may have to begin the new season without centre-back Jonathan Woodgate who is recovering from a torn thigh muscle. He did not play in Wednesday’s friendly at Ipswich, which Newcastle lost 2-1, and Robson said: “We didn’t want to risk him, he’s not quite ready. “Spanish defender Josemi’s £2 million move to Liverpool from Malaga was finally completed yesterday. Tottenham have abandoned attempts to sign French midfielder Olivier Thomert after Lens slapped a £10 million price tag on him. Lens said they had refused an offer of £2. 8 million for the 24-year-old from Spurs, now coached by former France coach Jacques Santini… The British trio are among the 16 seeded teams. Included among the non-seeded clubs are former European champions Benfica and FC Basle, who made a significant impact in the Champions League a couple of seasons ago. Marco van Basten has been named as Holland coach in succession to Dick Advocaat who resigned after Euro 2004 in the wake of mounting criticism. Van Basten, who scored 24 goals in 58 internationals, is taking on his first major coaching role, nine years after his playing days were ended by injury.

Rearguard action points the way forward for Owen
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 1, 2004
It is an open secret in football that any of England’s leading lights could become Chelsea players by signalling their interest to Roman Abramovich. Chelsea’s Russian owner can buy who he likes, and often he likes English. Not that Owen’s uniform next season is likely to be blue. If there is real danger in the transfer market for Liverpool, the threat is likely to come from Spain via Barcelona or Real Madrid. Owen recoils at the thought of speculation following him through a difficult second half of the season and all the way to Euro 2004. His declarations of loyalty to the club and their supporters are sincere, and he has been careful to avoid the suspicion that he would sell himself to the highest bidder or abandon Liverpool on a whim. But there was a large nugget of truth in what Holmes said, even if his words upset Owen and prompted speculation that he would leave SFX to be managed by his father, Terry… Not that Owen’s uniform next season is likely to be blue. Praise for Palios as FA see brighter future
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 1, 2004
Palios was considered to have put his job on the line when he pushed the England squad to the brink of a strike for refusing to allow Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand to play in the crucial Euro 2004 qualifier in Turkey while drugs investigations were being conducted and then caused similar outrage by preventing Leeds United’s Alan Smith from appearing in a friendly against Denmark. “I’m confident we have got our finances right and will cut our cloth accordingly now,” Thompson said. “Mark has been extremely good – in fact his expertise from his previous employment [a City accountant] has been invaluable… He denies intentionally taking a drug and says medicine he took for back pain probably caused the positive result. The case drew worldwide attention and brought a halt to his ambitions of playing in one of the top leagues in the world. Some critics had argued he was not up to playing in Serie A, but had been hired as a publicity stunt. He did not play in any official game for Perugia after his signing in June and was on the bench in the match in which he was found to be positive. Gaddafi’s suspension was made retroactive to begin on Nov 6.

Bahrain coach Srecko Juricic meanwhile has been trying to play down the significance of his team?s first ever quarter-final appearance in only their second attempt. Juricic said comparisons with Greece ? who came from nowhere to win Euro 2004 in Portugal ? were wide of the mark. But he said Bahrain were capable of beating anyone following Sunday?s win over Indonesia which was spoiled by a red card to defender Sayed Mohamed after an ugly goal-mouth brawl. ?The situation which happened in Europe with Greece was a one-off,? Juricic said. ?And now we are in the quarter-finals we are not a surprise to anyone any more. ?He added: ?We can beat every team but we can also lose to every team.

They are very strong, but we will have a real chance as we have nothing to lose against them, although I have to admit that I did not want to meet an English team, because their style does not suit us Austrians too well. “Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez: “Games like this are always difficult early in the season because you tend to find that sides such as Graz have been training longer than us. They have been in pre-season for three weeks more and it will not be easy. I know Graz won the double in Austria last season and that proves to me that they are a good team. They are both very strong from the physical point of view and we cannot vafford to undestimated them. This game is too important for us – we cannot make mistakes… “Bayer 04 Leverkusen v FC Baník OstravaLeverkusen coach Klaus Augenthaler: “I would rather have played away in the first leg. But this isn’t a musical request programme. The Czechs are excellent footballers, and we remember the goals of Marek Heinz [at UEFA EURO 2004™] very well. “Baník coach František Komnacký: “I’m neither delighted, nor disappointed. I don’t know enough about Leverkusen to say something about our chances. The only thing I know is that their coach is former national team sweeper Klaus Augenthaler. Our opponents are the favourites, though the current style of German football could suit us.

Arsenal trio in injury scare
Independent Online – Jul 30, 2004
“The most worrying problem we face is that three big players could miss the start of the season because of what happened at the European Championships,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told British newspapers. “That would be a massive blow to us because we want to start well and show we can be as competitive and as strong as we were last season. ”

Arsenal, who went through the league unbeaten last season, kick off away to Everton on August 15 before facing Middlesbrough a week later… “Patrick has the best chance because he could possibly be fit in 10 days. “But he has suffered one setback already with his thigh problem in training and we do not want to push him. “The pitches in Portugal were very, very hard and when you have only four weeks from the end of the tournament before the start of the Premiership programme there is no time to get the players fit. ”

And he hit out at national coaches who force unfit players to play. ‘He’s made a big commitment to the club’”It is unfortunate that sometimes national teams will put pressure on players to play when they are not fully fit, and it is the clubs who suffer the consequences,” he said. Wenger insisted skipper Vieira will remain at Highbury, even though the speculation linking him with a big-money move to Real Madrid refuses to go away.

Festival of the boot
The Age – Aug 1, 2004
His lover’s oleaginous charms were insufficient, it seems, to keep Sven from leaping into the sack with curvy Football Association secretary Faria Alam. Who was also, it now emerges, bedding chief executive Mark Palios. (A tiny idea might now be germinating about why England had so much difficulty at Euro 2004, not to mention a secondary idea about how the impressionable David Beckham became such a pants man. )But, brilliantly, there’s more. Security at the National Trust Squirrel Walk near Liverpool has been boosted after the sanctuary, home to a small colony of rare and timid red squirrels, was the scene of a blazing row between English striker Wayne Rooney and his fiancee, Coleen McLoughlin, over revelations that he had deceived her with a busty local hooker in 2002.

Anderson: Tabloids put own spin on sports in England
Pittsburgh Post Gazette – Jul 30, 2004
So with a gaggle of British reporters in town this week to cover the Chelsea-AS Roma soccer match at Heinz field last night, I decided to find out about the so-called tabloid press across the pond. There was nothing evident in the decorum of the English writers that would indicate sensationalism. Their questions in news conferences were not different from what you would hear if it were a Pittsburgh coach or player at the microphone. In fact, given the Queen’s English, the Brits came off as downright polite to my ears, even while asking pertinent and direct questions. In talking to a handful of British reporters, though, I started to get the scoop. In the United Kingdom, there are broadsheet papers, full size like the Post-Gazette, that offer straightforward stories and headlines. Then there are tabloids, thick half-size papers like the New York Post… The story accused Rooney of cheating on his high school sweetheart. He was 17 at the time. It’s suddenly relevant, apparently, because Rooney, now 19, was a standout in the recent Euro 2004 tournament. There was a follow-up story with the high school sweetheart claiming she and Rooney are still together. The British sports writers here were quick to point out that they never know about those stories before they appear, that they are written by secretive investigative and features writers who are never seen by the sports guys. Another soccer scandal has been brewing over an alleged love triangle. English national team coach Sven Goran Eriksson and his chief executive, Mark Palios, supposedly were involved with a secretary named Faria Alam.

The audience predominately consists of millennial males who are still impressionable, and will be responsible for the bulk of future spending growth. Naturally, many of these consumers are gamers themselves. And, while the word “gamer” conjures up visions of an unemployed loser playing Xbox in his mom’s basement, this is not emblematic of the typical eSports consumer. According to Joshua Spiegelman, managing director of Mindshare Spotlight, “a significant portion of fans are working professionals with href=”http://cheapjerseysupply.com/” target=”_blank”>cheap jerseys buying power”. The average gamer is 36 years old, with a household income of $76,000. This does not surprise us: the type of person who would watch people play video games wholesale nfl jerseys in their free time is likely well versed in technology and more likely to be employed in a high skill industry. But despite the potentially lucrative customer base, brands have been hesitant to advertise through eSports, largely due to a lack http://www.cheapnfljerseysx.com of understanding about the market dynamics. With the market still underserved in the US and Europe, there is still an opportunity for advertisers to carve out a “first mover advantage” in the space. There is evidence that more advertisers are smarting up to the opportunity: while advertising was historically limited to tech and electronic firms, auto and consumer packaged goods brands are now participating.
