Socceroos to summon big guns for cup qualifier
The Age – Aug 24, 2004
The Solomons, with a handful of Australian-based players with NSL experience, stunned the soccer world by snaring a draw with the Socceroos in the Oceania championship earlier this year to finish runner-up in the regional standings. That result earned them a shot at improbable qualification for the Confederations tournament and, later, the World Cup. FIFA will use the Confederations Cup, to be played in Germany in May-June 2005, as a dress rehearsal for the 2006 World Cup in the same country. As well as Greece, Brazil and Argentina, African champion Tunisia, Mexico and Asian champion Japan have qualified. – OLY/SUMMER04/WRESTLING – Gardner gets bronze, retires

EA’s latest Madden title, Madden NFL 2005, is out for the major consoles, with a PC version on the way. But its Xbox version is the most interesting because it has added online play this year. Previously, EA’s games were playable online only with Sony’s PlayStation 2 but now are also online-compatible with Microsoft’s Xbox Live service. On the Xbox, Madden looks great, and there are so many play modes and options that only serious football fans will care about most of them… Madden is the better game, but NFL 2K5 is the best bang for your buck. Cozy relationship Speaking of EA and Microsoft, the former sports game rivals seem on better terms than ever. Microsoft, EA and international soccer association FIFA recently signed a cross-promotional deal to make the Xbox the official console of the 2006 FIFA World Cup and develop the FIFA Interactive World Cup for online video gamers. Of course, it probably didn’t hurt Microsoft’s courtship of EA that it recently canned its internal team sports game development group. Microsoft originally said the developers of NFL Fever, NBA Inside Drive and NHL Rivals were just taking the year off to craft next season’s titles. But the company has apparently decided to retire those franchises altogether, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Nonteam sports games such as tennis title Top Spin will continue, Microsoft said. – OLY/SUMMER04/GEN – Daily dope: Ukrainian rowers lose bronze
