McLeish urges tourism ‘ambition’
BBC News – Jul 11, 2004
He said: “The first bid was important – that put us on the European football
map, but I believe that we should go it alone next time. “I think it was a mistake to go with the Irish, not for any other reason than
that they really didn’t have anything to add to the bid. “That’s the kind of competition where we have a tremendously good record in
football, we have tremendously good fans, I believe we have the stadia and
that’s the kind of ambitious project we should be saying: ‘Yes!’

“Why not 2012, 2016? At the end of the day, we’ve got to have a long-term
horizon. Scotland has rarely had that… He said: “The first bid was important – that put us on the European football

No sports cash for Dundee
Evening Telegraph – Jul 29, 2004
Despite every other major city in Scotland benefiting from the ?230 million of Scottish Executive and sportscotland money, Dundee City Council leisure and arts convener Charles Farquhar said, ?If there had been a Dundee bid for this new funding, then the local authority would have had to contribute both revenue and capital to be funded from council tax. ?The city council was unable to fund additional revenue and capital expenditure and understands that other local authorities in Tayside and Fife were in a similar position. ?
Prior to the March 31 deadline for applications, the council admitted it would not be bidding for any of the money, giving the reason that the council was unable to contribute additional revenue and capital expenditure which would have to be funded from council tax. The funding aims to provide talented athletes with a network of state-of-the-art facilities for training and competition, which they need to achieve sporting excellence… These also include Falkirk Council ?3m, Glasgow City Council ?17m for three sites, North Lanarkshire Council ?5m and Stirling Council ?2. More than ?50 million, including ?16 million which was set aside for facilities linked to the Euro 2008 bid, has been allocated from public funds to build the new and refurbished national and regional multi-sports facilities, delivering a total investment, including money from partners, of up to ?230 million. Facilities include five full size indoor football training pitches, a 5000-seater national indoor sports arena, two multi-sport 6000-seater municipal stadia, a national curling academy, an indoor velodrome and an upgrade to Edinburgh?s Royal Commonwealth Pool. Liz McColgan, chairperson of scottishathletics voiced her criticism of Dundee City Council?s failure to bid for a share of the cash prior to the application deadline but today welcomes the new opportunities that will open up due to the new facilities. ?Facilities are the cornerstone for the development of athletics in Scotland. Today?s news, which reveals both the construction of new and the improvement of existing sites opens up massive opportunities for Scottish athletes of all levels.

Scots cautious on Euro 2012
BBC News – Jul 12, 2004
The FAI announced on Sunday that it was planning to approach the Scots despite the failed bid for Euro 2008. But Taylor said the SFA would consider any approach with caution after the disappointment of the last attempt. “If we thought our chances were good, we would have to consider whether we were going to bid ourselves,” he added. The FAI said it would have only one stadium to put forward for the bid – the revamped Lansdowne Road. “We would have to consider our position very carefully,” added Taylor… “But we need two stadia in Ireland at the minimum – and Croke Park, the home of Gaelic football, was always a problem for us. ”

The Gaelic Athletic Association, which owns Croke Park, will not allow non-Irish sports to be played there. Taylor said the minimum stadia requirement was likely to be eight – Euro 2004 hosts Portugal had 10 venues. Portugal spent 600m euros on securing the tournament but expected to make 900m euros as a result. “I think all economists look at this sort of major event policy and realise it makes good sense for the country,” Taylor continued. But he insisted that any thoughts of competing with other potential bidders Italy and Russia to host Euro 2012 were some way off.
