"An appropriate profit is necessary because Credit Suisse is not investing its own money but that of insurance clients," said Reinhard Giger, head of the project for the large Swiss bank. Credit Suisse and the city council said another reason they are taking their case to the supreme court is to have a legal ruling to protect future building projects in Zurich from the same kind of problem. Ledergerber has not lost hope Zurich will be able to host Euro 2008, and talked of renovating the Letzigrund athletics stadium, home of FC Zurich. The city had planned to revamp the Letzigrund — primarily for track meets and rock concerts — for 110 million francs (US$87 million; euro71. Bringing it up to European Championship standards — including an increase to 30,000 seats from 25,000 — would cost an extra 5. 7 million francs (US$4.

The move means that the organisers will be forced to use seven stadiums instead of the planned eight for the tournament in the two countries, the Swiss football federation (SFV) said in a statement. ?Both the organisers and UEFA are disappointed that ? as the situation looks today ? there will be no matches of UEFA Euro 2008 in Zurich,? it added. No decision has been made on where the three group matches which were due to be played in Zurich will be held. ?We have taken note that the new Hardturm stadium in Zurich will not be ready on time but we remain fully confident the Local Organising Committee will run a successful tournament even though seven stadiums may be used instead of the eight initially planned,? Neighbors clash in Piraeus Campaign begins in Sarajevo

We hope Turkish coach Ersun Yanal has made a thorough study of the Euro 2004 final

Turkey and Greece meet tonight in Piraeus in 2006 World Championship Qualifying Group Two, a meeting which would have been impossible a decade ago. Then the tensions between the two countries would have meant that security for the visiting team simply could not have been guaranteed. Now there has been at least a sporting rapprochement between the neighbors to such an extent that they launched an unsuccessful joint bid to host Euro 2008. There are questions, though, over how far the rapprochement will extend to the ordinary fans in the streets and in the stadium. Security fears have been reawakened by ugly clashes between Greeks and Albanians following Greece’s 2-1 defeat by Albania on Wednesday but the minds of the coaches are fixed on the need for points this evening and not on any extraneous factors. Turkey also dropped points last Wednesday in a 1-1 draw at home to Georgia and at present Albania is in the unaccustomed position of leading the group. Both sides will be aiming to change that in Piraeus… Service
Provided, of course, that he receives any service from midfield. In that sector, Greek captain Theo Zagorakis, the official player of the tournament at Euro 2004, will doubtless have gained great encouragement from watching the way Georgia managed to disrupt Turkey’s movement, mainly by playing tight on Emre Belozoglu. Emre needed support which he did not receive and Ersun Yanal has to address this problem. Surely the coach has to consider starting in-form Trabzonspor man Gokdeniz Karadeniz and playing him inside rather than wide on the right. Yanal also has his problems at the back where Turkey continues to show amazing vulnerability against high balls. With keeper Rustu Recber still nowhere near his best after returning to Fenerbahce from a wretched year with Barcelona, that vulnerability could prove fatal especially with the likes of the dangerous Angelos Charisteas playing up front for Greece. In such a high pressure game, Yanal might go for experience in defense by recalling Galatasaray veteran Bulent Korkmaz, provided Bulent has recovered from the illness which kept him out against Georgia.

Wayne Bridge was denied by Dudek’s fine diving save, while Michael Owen was narrowly off target with a fine effort. England now share top spot with Austria in Group 6 on four points. The Euro 2008 co-hosts defeated Azerbaijan in Vienna 2-0 with goals from Stranzl (23) and Kollman (44). Tonight’s other match in the Group 6 was a highly charged encounter with Northern Ireland gaining a valuable point against Wales in the Millennium Stadium. Robert Earnshaw’s 75th minute strike earned the Welsh a 2-2 draw, but the main talking point will be the sendings off – three in total. Robbie Savage and Michael Hughes were both sent off for violent conduct after only nine minutes. A superb volley from Sunderland’s Jeff Whitley gave Lawrie Sanchez’s side the lead after 11 minutes, and they doubled that advantage, courtesy of an audacious chip from David Healy.

Transfer explosion”One of the consequences of this explosion of transfers is that it has become more difficult in some countries for young players to work their way up to their club’s first team, a struggle which may make them turn their backs on football and take up another sport instead,” UEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson said recently in UEFA’s official publication uefadirect. “In the long or even medium term, this situation could cause our national teams serious problems in terms of rejuvenating their squads. “Progress reportA progress report will be heard on the state of preparations for the UEFA EURO 2008™ final round in Austria and Switzerland. UEFA heard last week that the new Hardturm Stadium in the Swiss city of Zurich – one of eight planned venues – will not be ready for the tournament. Zurich issueAlthough the Zurich people voted in favour of the project, appeals were made by local residents and environmental groups against planning permission for the arena, on the grounds that the construction of the venue would lead to traffic congestion in the area. The resulting administrative and legal issues mean that the stadium will not be ready by the summer of 2007 and pre-tournament testing. On Friday, Europe’s major clubs, meeting with UEFA within the European Club Forum, said that they agree to take part in the FIFA Club World Championship starting in 2005 under its six-team format, but that participation of the European club in the competition should be on an invitational basis only.

Although he admitted Ireland could have won tonight?s World Cup Group 4 qualifier, Shay Given also feels the game could easily have ended in defeat, so he is not too upset at gaining just a point from the match. The Newcastle shot stopper had a quite 90 minutes against the Cypriots on Saturday but tonight in Basle was a different story. On at least five occasions he was the only reason the Swiss failed to add to their single goal on the night. Although Ireland created many chances of their own, Given felt that it was game that could have gone either way. ?We could have got all three points but we could have lost it as well, so maybe a point is a fair result,? confirmed the Donegal native.
