The official FIFA World Cup 2006 shop was opened on Thursday by German football officials who are still optimistic that their team will be holding the World Cup in 2006. The World Cup shop, in the German capital Berlin, where the world cup final will be played, was openend by the German national football trainer Juergen Klinsmann, President of the World Cup 2006 organisation committee, Franz Beckenbauer, German national player Arne Friedrich, and FIFA General Secretary Urs Linsi. Even if the German football team dont get to keep the World Cup 2006 in Germany, the World Cup shop is certainly a winner. It is certain to see lots of customers before the first official balls are kicked in 2006.

Klinsmann on collision course with DFB over World Cup base
Expatica – Sep 17, 2004
Designated DFB president Theo Zwanziger said in an interview Wednesday the federation would not budge from an agreement for the German squad to use Bayer Leverkusen’s stadium as public training ground during the tournament in Germany. Klinsmann insisted Tuesday he would have the final say over where the national team will be based. Klinsmann has upset chiefs at Bayer Leverkusen over plans to choose a new hotel headquarters and training ground.

Argentina choose Pekerman as coach
CNN – Sep 17, 2004
"We wish him all the best, we know who he is, he has a great track record and personally I’m very happy he’s back with us," said Argentine Football Association president Julio Grondona. Pekerman, an exponent of flowing football, all-out attack and fair play, was in charge of Argentina’s under-20 team from 1994 to 2002, when they won the World Youth Cup in 1995, 1997 and 2001. Bielsa, who led Argentina to their first Olympic gold medal last month, left on Tuesday, saying he had run out of energy after six years in the high-pressure job. The introverted, eccentric Bielsa departed just as he appeared to have won back the confidence of the public following his team’s spectacular failure at the 2002 World Cup, when they were knocked out in the first round… "We wish him all the best, we know who he is, he has a great track record and personally I’m very happy he’s back with us," said Argentine Football Association president Julio Grondona. Pekerman was second choice to step into the void but was given his chance after former Boca Juniors coach Carlos Bianchi turned down the job, saying he had other priorities outside football. "I’m happy to be here again and I hope to repay the confidence which Julio Grondona has placed in me," Pekerman told reporters.

“South Africa asked for help, so we do not need to impose it. “The Fifa office is not just there to monitor the work. “But we will, together with the South African Football Association, start the organisation of the 2010 World Cup even before the 2006 World Cup is played,” Blatter said.

Local coach Sam Arday was appointed last week to take charge of the Black Stars for their next 2006 World Cup qualifier against the DR Congo on 10 October, he was called in after Portugal’s Mariano Barreto quit the post to take up a job with Portuguese first division side Maritimo. Meanwhile the GFA has written to former coach Barreto demanding US $10 million from him as compensation for breaching his three year contract with the association. Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, the GFA Chairman, said that Barreto failed to adhere to clause eight of his contract that gave him the right to state any grievances in writing. “His action, which constitutes a breach of the contract has caused the GFA an irreparable loss and lots of inconveniences,” Tamakloe said.

SVGFF fires foreign coaches
Jamaica Observer – Sep 18, 2004
SVGFF fires foreign coaches – JAMAICAOBSERVER. Major Leacock said assistant coach, Roger Gurley has been put incharge on an interim basis and a more suitable arrangement would be put in place over the coming days. The president said the decision to fire the coaches was made at an executive meeting on Wednesday and was unanimously accepted. He said the decision came following a number of breaches by the coaches and their constant disrespect for the SVGFF and team manager, Maxim James. "These guys have treated us with what could only be described as contempt at times and while we allowed these things to go by previously we thought that enough was enough, and hence our decision," Leacock explained… "How can you explain that after the national team’s sub-standard performance against St Kitts here and their next scheduled match is against the number eight ranked team in the world (Mexico) the coaches deciding to return to the UK for two weeks and without even informing the SVGFF," the SVG football boss questioned. The coaches, who reports say left the country three days after the St Kitts and Nevis match, could not be reached for comment. UK-based Shaw and Podd, who were given an initial contract for six months or up until the first round of the CONCACAF Zone 2006 World Cup Qualifiers, were given an extension after SVG made it into the semi-final stage of the play-offs. SVG made it into the semi-final stage by beating Nicaragua 6-3 on aggregate over two legs. They got their first points in the semi-finals with a 1-0 victory over St Kitts here on September 10 on a Rodney Jack goal. President Leacock said the SVGFF would be moving over the next few days to get a replacement coach with the help of the regional parent bodies CONCACAF and the CFU. SVG have matches remaining against Mexico on October 6 and 9, St Kitts and Nevis on October 13, and Trinidad and Tobago on November 17 in the CONCACAF Zone World Cup Qualifiers.

Sunday’s match at the Estadio Machava on the outskirts of Maputo is expected to fill the crumbling 50,000-capacity venue. The match is the 15th meeting between the two Lusophone nations since both became Fifa members in 1980, so far Angola have won six and Mozambique three and there have been five draws, including their last two clashes. While Angola will be pre-match favourites Mozambique, who are not involved in the current 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign, are in a hungry mood given their lack of international exposure recently. The Cosafa Castle Cup was launched in 1997 and been played every year since by the 12 member countries of the Confederation of Southern Africa Football Associations

The second semi-final between Zimbabwe and Zambia in Harare has been moved to October 24.

Constantine’s fate in balance
Times of India – Sep 19, 2004
Addressing a
press-meet, AIFF president Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi informed: “After taking into
account, Stephen’s record with the national squad, we haven’t hurried ourselves
to any conclusion. Only after India’s away-match against Oman on November 17, we
will decide on the future concerning the national team. ”

“We will
host a conference in the Capital in the last week of November (dates not
finalised as yet). We intend to have interactive sessions with technical
experts, the club representatives and the media and then finalise the course of
action… Alongwith a U-13 festival tournament conceptualised on the AFC
model, we are also starting the 3rd division NFL on an experimental
basis. ”

It was also learnt that Delhi will host the Santosh Trophy
from October 14-31. “Players for the 2006 Asiad will be selected from this
tournament,” Munshi pronounced.

Vietnamese

one of the most important factors in football and one based very much
on the marketing activities of VFF, was also discussed by AFC and VFF
experts. Football needs a
long-term marketing strategy, and the VFF does not currently have a
long-term sponsor for its league or tournaments. The VFF could
take much more money from the television rights of the national team

He had to change if he wanted to go into management and he has matured into a confident, articulate, knowledgeable manager who commands the respect of younger players, both because of his own achievements as a player and the way he conducts himself as a boss. He has transformed Wales from also-rans on the international stage to genuine contenders to qualify for major tournaments, even if they still have not quite made that final breakthrough. They were unlucky not to make it to the European Championship and though some people are writing them off for the 2006 World Cup, I still believe they have a chance to qualify ahead of Poland and Austria because I do not think there is much between them and the Poles. As passionate as Mark has been about the Wales job, it was inevitable that, at some stage, he would be attracted back to club football, and where better to start a club managerial career than at Blackburn Rovers, where he finished his playing days. It has a nice symmetry, if nothing else. The timing may not have been great, with Wales about to play England in a World Cup qualifier. But despite impressions to the contrary, Premiership jobs do not come around that often and the fact that all the Blackburn players expressed their keenness to have Mark must have helped to influence him.

But it is Sutton who has all the selection problems, most of which must centre around what to do with Woods. Mickelson was his ninth Ryder Cup partner – but he was no more successful than anyone else in trying to coax the best from the former world number one. Langer said afterwards he would split them up if the problem was his. Luckily for the German, and Europe, it is a dilemma purely for the Americans. The previous worst opening day ever for them was a 6-2 deficit at both
Muirfield Village in 1987 and Brookline five years ago. Sutton will surely remind his stunned side that they did come back to win the 1999 encounter.

“I am very flattered that they thought of me,” said Pekerman who is a widely respected coach here having led Argentina to the world youth titles in 1997, 1999 and 2001. “We are at the halfway stage of the World Cup qualifying campaign and there is a lot of work to do. ” Argentina are second in the South American qualifying competition for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, a point behind Brazil. Pekerman’s first matches in charge will be the qualifiers on October 9 and 11 against Uruguay and Chile respectively. Pekerman was offered the job of coach after Carlos Bianchi turned it down on Wednesday. The vacancy arose when Bielsa surprisingly announced his resignation on Tuesday, just over two weeks after guiding the Argentines to their first ever Olympic title. Bianchi, who resigned from his post as Boca Juniors handler in July citing family reasons, has never enjoyed close relations to the all-powerful Grondona.

Padraig is my dream partner and we had a great day. It’s a proud day for Ireland and for Europe,” said the 38-year-old. Woods was bitterly disappointed with the way he played.

Last month, the Italy-based player voluntarily withdrew his services from national duties after he was sacked from the Athens Olympic Games on disciplinary grounds on the eve of Ghana’s group opener against Italy. Muntari became a rebel and impulsive action was greeted with widespread disapproval and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) endorsed the punitive action by Coach Mariano Barreto. Nyaho-Tamakloe, outraged at the player’s behaviour, swore that Muntari would be welcomed back into the team only after he had rendered “an unqualified apology” to the nation. After reflecting at his Italy base on his self-imposed exile, Muntari has eaten humble pie and is ready to lace his boots again for Ghana in the journey to the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Information pieced together by this paper indicates that the midfielder has duly rendered an apology to the GFA and some of his team-mates, runaway Stars coach Barreto, even to the extent of withdrawing his strongly-worded letter of resignation to the FA. Informed by the turn of events, the FA has pardoned Muntari and he is being seriously considered for invitation by caretaker coach, Sam Arday, who is determined to field Ghana’s strongest possible squad to face the Congolese. Until he opted out of the Stars, Muntari was a prominent figure in the team’s qualifiers against Burkina Faso, Uganda and South Africa. At the height of his performance during the seven-month tenure of Barreto, Muntari left Ghanaians with fond memories with a classic goal ? a left-footed, waist-high volley ? in Kumasi last June, as the Stars run riot in a 3-0 victory over a hapless South Africa team.

BBC SPORT | Golf | Monty claims Woods scalp
BBC News – Sep 17, 2004
Montgomerie, who has gone through divorce in a difficult year, notched a birdie to claim the first hole as his pairing birdied five of the first six. The US took 80 minutes to win a hole, and always trailed before Europe clinched victory on the 17th. Montgomerie said the defeat of world number two Woods and fourth-ranked Mickelson provided a crucial early boost for Europe. “It was very important. It was psychologically almost worth two points to us,” said the Scot, who is ranked 62. “It has been a super morning whatever happens. We have dovetailed very well… ”

Montgomerie, who for the first time in seven Cup appearances needed a wildcard, has now lost only two of his last 17 games in the event, while Woods has won just five of all his 16. Sent out together for the first time ever, Woods and Mickelson struggled from the outset. Woods, like Montgomerie and Harrington, drove into a fairway bunker on the first while Mickelson found the trees. The Americans were back to only one down at the turn, before Harrington birdied the long 12th and 473-yard par four 14th. Mickelson kept things alive with a 25-footer on the 16th, but a par was good enough at the next for the Europeans.

GOLDMAN: Yeah. College football remains popular, and I should say the ratings for the NFL have gotten a little bump since the election’s been over. In the 1880’s and 1890’s, the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe railroads hired more Mexicans than any other ethnic group to construct rail lines in Arizona, southern California, Nevada and New Mexico. Railroad managers hired Mexicans not only because they were accustomed to the Southwest’s hot, dry climate but also because they were forced to work for less money than other ethnic groups.
