Welsh World Cup ticket anger
BBC News – Sep 21, 2004
Two-thirds of Wales’ 6,500 tickets for the game in Manchester on 9 October will not go directly to supporters. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has ruled instead that most are split between clubs, players, sponsors and FAW committee members. Some fans say it is unfair the other 2,000 will go to Wales Travel Club, where entry is by invitation only. The game will be at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s ground, before a 67,000 crowd, and could be crucial to the hopes of both Wales and England in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany… The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has ruled instead that most are split between clubs, players, sponsors and FAW committee members. Ivory Coast may be Africa’s new soccer power
Independent Online – Sep 22, 2004
Ivory Coast’s playing talent is complemented by a new and progressive administration of the country’s football, something of an anomaly in African football. Ivorian Football Federation president Jacques Anouma has managed to overcome traditional difficulties around finance and logistics to provide a professional approach, which gives them an edge over most of their African opponents. There is also a public campaign, conceived by the football federation, for support in the Germany 2006 World Cup qualifying bid. “This we hope will galvanise everyone in the common goal of qualifying for Germany,” Anouma said in a recent interview. Michel, who went to the 1994 World Cup with Cameroon and the 1998 edition with the Moroccans, is confident his side will ensure he coaches again at a World Cup finals. Michel also took France to the 1986 finals in Mexico. “The Ivory Coast has never been to the finals before, so that is obviously the objective.

FIFA set to take over 2010 preparations

“South Africa asked for help, so we do not need to impose it. The FIFA
office is not just there to monitor the work,” he said. “But we will, together with the South African Football Association, start
the organisation of the 2010 World Cup even before the 2006 World Cup is
played.

But when they progress to senior level, for some reason they start to lose. com: Why do you think this is?
Górski: It is all down to the standard of coaching and organisation, and is the responsibility of the Polish Football Federation and the experts they hire. com: Do you think Poland has a chance to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup?
Górski: Of course there is a chance. It won’t be easy, but lets stick with coach Pawal Janas until the end and see what happens… com: When you look back at your time in charge of the Polish national side, is there anything you would do differently?
Górski: Possibly, possibly not. You never know in football. We played our 1974 FIFA World Cup semi-final with Germany in heavy rain. The match should have been postponed, but with 70,000 people in the stadium and 27 television stations broadcasting live all over the world, it had to go ahead. Anyway, we could not play “our” football because of the water on the pitch. Today I would draw on the experience I have gained, but I don’t know if it would change anything.

ESPNsoccernet – Europe – No approach from Real – Sven

‘Although former assistant coach Mariano Garcia Remon has been appointed asCamacho’s replacement, a lack of immediate success could see him become merely astop-gap move, with Eriksson having previously been courted by Real presidentFlorentino Perez. Moving to Spain could also enable him to escape the current spotlight on hisprivate life in this country, while allowing him to coach David Beckham, MichaelOwen and Jonathan Woodgate at club level. There are, meanwhile, some figures on the Football Association’s board whomight actually welcome Eriksson’s departure, especially if Real were to pay theFA up to &pound4million compensation. Despite previously maintaining his commitment to England, that did not stopthe Swede talking to Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon last season, while hewas also linked with Manchester United before Sir Alex Ferguson’s U-turn onstaying. Eriksson told BBC Radio’s World Service: ‘I spoke to Steven this morning andI have now heard that the bone is broken and he should be out for eight weeks. ‘Of course, that is bad for Liverpool, for him and for us. Steven is a veryimportant player for us but there are several other excellent midfielders in thesquad.

Abbas set for Uganda challenge
BBC News – Sep 21, 2004
“Uganda still has a chance of qualifying but we need to work harder,” the Egyptian coach said. Abbas told BBC Sport that the participation of the country’s foreign-based players, some of whom opted out of recent qualifiers, would be instrumental to realising their ambition. The 49-year-old coach, who arrived in Uganda in Monday, is expected to take over the national side after the 2006 World Cup and Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa on 10 October. “Uganda has talented players but I plan to tap talent from the juniors,” Abbas said. His arrival was the result of an agreement between the Egyptian and Ugandan football associations. Haruna Mawanda, the secretary-general of the Ugandan FA, said Abbas is expected to formulate a long-term plan for the national team. “We have not yet finalised the [length of the] contract, but it will not be less than three years,” said Mawanda.

The fan – Hunter Davies advises Sven to stay at home
New Statesman – Sep 20, 2004
Before and afterwards, he’s awfully nice to them, so Gary Neville has told us, loving and caring for them, listening to their moans, soothing egos, giving in to their whims, holding their hands, wiping their bums – which is a useful role, do not mock, all players need that sort of attention. On the other hand, they already have people who perform that function: their mums. So what is the point of Sven? England have been so jammy, landed in the cushiest group, yet Sven is going to put us through agonies over the next, how long, I have the fixture list somewhere, oh no, we have a whole year to go, until October 2005, before England are safely into the 2006 World Cup finals. Of course, England will qualify. Of course, Sven will keep his job. What we don’t know is what Sven does… He clearly has no role, nothing to do, a spare Swede at a veggie gathering. His staff won’t even sit beside him, judging by several glimpses of him at the Poland match, where he was on the bench all on his own, both seats either side empty. Poor sod, I thought, he’s run out of Big Issues to sell. Presumably he does wander into the dressing room at half-time, looks around in a daze, offers a few banalities that are either ignored or have the reverse effect, as England usually do worse in the second half.

‘Venezuela no longer a dead chicken’
go.com – Sep 21, 2004
21, 2004’Venezuela no longer a dead chicken’RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 20 (Reuters) – Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has praised the improvement shown by next month’s World Cup qualifying opponents Venezuela and says theycan no longer be considered ‘a dead chicken’. The world champions play in Maracaibo, where they won 6-0 ontheir last visit four years ago, on October 9 and will bedefending an unbeaten record against Venezuela in fullinternationals. But Parreira warned on Monday that Venezuela, who have wonthree out of eight matches in the 2006 World Cup qualifyingcompetition, are a vastly improved side. ‘Without wanting to cause panic, Venezuela have improved alot, they’re not a dead chicken any more,’ he told the BrazilianFootball Confederation’s official website. ‘It’s no longer the Venezuela that would go on to the field, concede six or seven goals and lose easily. ‘They’re much more confident, much more sure of themselves, they’ve already won three games in the competition, they’ve putin some good performances and so we have to take the gameseriously,’ said Parreira. ‘If we do that we will bring home three points.

Menyongar named captain of Liberian National Team

BBC SPORT | Tennis | Koubek warning to GB
BBC News – Sep 21, 2004
And Koubek is looking forward to being captained by Muster for the first time. “Everyone in Austria looks up to Thomas because he was the number one player in the world and won at Roland Garros and many other tournaments,” said Koubek. “I looked up to Thomas when I was a kid – he was the best player in the world and it is a good thing that he is now coaching us in Davis Cup. “It’s not easy to follow him but I’m trying and I hope that people are going to remember me too.

If the US is ever going to defeat Europe, these changes need to be…
CNN – Sep 21, 2004
We realize something’s gotta change. And we realize the thing that must change is the rules.
