Malawi name Osman
BBC News – Sep 27, 2004
Kaputa, appointed in April as the head of a coaching trio that included Osman, handed in his resignation earlier this month following Malawi’s 3-2 away loss to Kenya. That loss left Malawi without a win from the four games played in the group stages of the 2006 World Cup qualifiers. Kaputa initially agreed to stay on for the next qualifier against Tunisia on 9 October. But FA general secretary Roosevelt Mpinganjira said on Sunday that Osman will now take charge. Osman, a former coach of premier league side MTL Wanderers and ex-general secretary of the Football Association of Malawi, has agreed to work without payment. “What is important is to get the players in the right frame of mind,” said Osman.

September 26, 2004 Sports Klinsmann irks’emReuters, BerlinJuergen Klinsmann has made it clear since taking over as Germany coach that he wants to run the team his own way, and not everybody likes it. Even before he was appointed in July the former Germany forward had raised a few eyebrows by saying new structures should be created and new methods implemented. A long-time critic of the German Football Association (DFB), Klinsmann was not the preferred candidate and was picked only after Ottmar Hitzfeld and Otto Rehhagel turned down the job. He said straight away that Germany could lift the World Cup on home soil in 2006, which sent the right message to the fans. His methods, however, are already proving controversial. His decision to keep living in the United States was criticised by several German soccer personalities, notably former Germany captain Lothar Matthaeus. Then came the appointment of American fitness trainers and the introduction of unusual exercices in training… “I fully support Juergen Klinsmann’s project to build a strong team for the 2006 World Cup,” Theo Zwanziger, the influential DFB’s treasurer, said on Friday. “I also expect him to understand that you cannot change everything,” he added. “The entire situation regarding the planning for the 2006 World Cup must be discussed quietly and in agreement with the leadership of the DFB. “Klinsmann also said he was not in favour of Germany playing the opening game of the 2006 finals, arguing it might be better for the hosts to avoid the pressure of such an occasion and have a few more days to prepare. Franz Beckenbauer, the president of the local World Cup organising committee, reacted calmly as ever, saying Brazil could play the opening match instead, providing they qualified. On the pitch at least, Klinsmann has done everything right so far. After a 3-1 win over Austria in his first game in charge, Germany, who reached a depressing low with their group stage exit from Euro 2004 that prompted Voeller to resign, produced their best display in years against Brazil.
