Squads round-up: Dellas recalled
CNN – Oct 1, 2004
Dellas, who missed the European champions’ defeat in Albania and the home draw against Turkey because of injury, replaces Nikos Dabizas. PAOK Salonika striker Dimitris Salpingidis has also been left out of a squad that is comprised entirely of players from the Euro 2004 squad. Midfielder Vassilis Tsartas remains in the set-up in spite of not having joined a club since leaving AEK Athens after Euro 2004. Kuqi replaces ForssellMeanwhile, Finland have called up Ipswich’s Shefki Kuqi for the two World Cup Group One qualifiers this month, as they seek to overcome the loss of injured striker Mikael Forssell. Forssell, who has scored 12 goals in 31 internationals, could be out of action for around six months after undergoing surgery last week, a potentially huge blow to Finland’s slim chances of qualifying. Kuqi was part of a 20-man squad named by coach Antti Muurinen for Finland’s home game in Tampere against Armenia on October 9 and away match against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on October 13. Kuqi has five goals in eight matches for English club Ipswich this season but has struggled on the international stage with only three goals in 34 matches.

Bulgaria hope to revive memories of class of ’94
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 2, 2004
Germany, the World Cup holders, tend to win few neutral admirers, hence the global glee, and to rub salt into German wounds Lechkov, whose goal gave his country a 2-1 victory, was the first Bulgarian to play in the Bundesliga with Hamburg. Since 1994 Bulgaria, who lost in the semi-finals to Italy, have made little impact on the international stage, but coach Plamen Markov has revived their fortunes even though they travel to Euro 2004 as underdogs in Group C.

Algarve prepares for the first wave
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 2, 2004
We don’t expect it to be any different during the football, whether it’s on Feb 18 or during the European Championship in June. “At Faro next week, the 6,000 expected England fans could be breath-tested on their way into the ground. During Euro 2004, anyone found over the drink-driving limit – which is equivalent to less than 2. 5 pints of lager – will be banned from entry and could be deported. Alcohol will not be on sale at the venues during the summer and there will also be body searches and passport checks at the turnstiles. Also, more than 2,500 people are subject to banning orders to prevent them entering Portugal, and most of the stadiums have police cells. The police have examined hotel bookings to see which areas will have the most fans.

Chelsea rolls over Porto as Celtic falters

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich emerged victorious not just once but twice on Wednesday as Jose Mourinho guided Chelsea to a 3-1 victory over the Portuguese coach’s former club Champions League holders FC Porto. Earlier CSKA Moscow, the Russian club who is sponsored by his company, rolled over struggling French giants Paris Saint Germain 2-0 to set up a Group H clash between the two sides in London on Oct. However if Abramovich wore a broad smile it probably grew wider when the man he sacked to make way for Mourinho, Claudio Ranieri, saw his Valencia side let a 1-0 lead slip to 2-1 defeat by German champions Werder Bremen, albeit after they were reduced to 10-men in the 55th minute. Elsewhere both Milan sides enjoyed 3-1 victories, though in markedly different fashion as Inter stormed into a 3-0 lead over Belgian side Anderlecht while AC Milan were pegged back to 1-1 by Celtic before scoring twice in the last two minutes to take the three points… “I wasn’t very satisfied with the way we started but then we clicked up a gear. We gained in confidence after the first goal and totally dominated the game from then on. ”
Bremen’s Greek Euro 2004 goalscoring hero Angelos Charisteas struck the decisive goal six minutes from time to down Valencia at the Weserstadion after coming on as a second half substitute. Ranieri, however, was his usual phlegmatic self about the defeat. “It was hard going with one man less in the final stages,” said the Italian. “But there is no shame in losing to Bremen they are the German champions after all. ”
Inter coach Roberto Mancini had to fend off questions that he had left out disgruntled Italian international striker Christian Vieri because of the club president, though it paid off as his replacement Obafemi Martins scored in the match to add to the two he scored on Sunday.

Ferdinand, Rooney, Campbell in England squad
SI.com – Oct 3, 2004
“I saw him on Tuesday and he was fantastic — scoring three goals on his debut and he hadn’t played football since June. “So it’s very difficult to keep him out and why should I keep him out? He should play. “Rooney made a stunning impression during Euro 2004, scoring four goals in the tournament before injuring his foot. Eriksson was also boosted by the return of Arsenal defender Campbell who missed the early part of the season with an Achilles tendon injury. Campbell is expected to continue the partnership with Ferdinand that was interrupted by the United defender’s ban, although Chelsea’s John Terry and Tottenham Hotspur’s Ledley King have impressed in their absence. MAIN TASKManchester United’s Phil Neville was included along with Real Madrid striker Michael Owen, despite both being starved of first-team football. Owen did start against Deportivo Coruna in the Primera Liga on Sunday but was taken off as a precaution early in the second half after complaining at the break about a “slight muscle problem” according to Real coach Mariano Garcia Remon. However, the strain is not serious and Owen will be vying with Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe to partner Rooney in attack. Defoe celebrated his first start with his first England goal in a 2-1 away win over Poland in a World Cup qualifier last month. Eriksson’s main task will be to shuffle his midfield to make up for the loss of the injured Steven Gerrard, with possible replacements being Newcastle United’s Nicky Butt, Chelsea’s Joe Cole or Manchester City’s Sean Wright-Phillips. “Unfortunately, we have Steven Gerrard out and Steven has always been a very important player to us, but that’s life,” said Eriksson of his key midfielder who has a foot injury. “But the squad is strong and it gives me problems.

Eriksson gives Owen warning

No favourites “As a manager you should try to be loyal to the players, but atsome point, if I have a player sitting on the bench in the squadwho is better than someone who normally plays, I have nodoubts. “It’s not like I have favourites. Summing up Owen’s plight, Eriksson said: “It’s not good for him,it’s not good for me, or for England if he plays too littlefootball at the moment. “Of course, it’s tough for him, he’s never been used to sittingon the bench, not for England or for Liverpool. FA must put players in the picture
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 1, 2004
I was so taken aback to see my name linked with England that, at first, I thought I had been selected for the team again. I am certainly not sure that helping to lay down criteria for which players can and cannot be selected for England is something I would want to get involved in. If the FA had asked me, I would have told them that… And so it should be because it really is an honour to pull on that white shirt. Almost every player feels the same way, which makes it crucial that they feel they are being treated with fairness and respect by the FA, to whom they are donating their services. To that end, both officials and players must show tomorrow they have moved forward so that the only strikes we have to worry about at Euro 2004 are those from Michael Owen and the other England players.

Backtracking Vogts claims draw would not kill finals bid
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Oct 3, 2004
If there is a surprise among the forwards named, it will be a recall for Neil McCann, who Vogts watched yesterday at Southampton, rather than Robbie Winters who has scored 23 times in 28 games for Brann Bergen and was checked out on Vogts’s behalf by Archie Gemmill, but will have to wait until next month’s friendly with Sweden. “Robbie has scored a lot, but a lot against amateur teams. He has done well but the time is not right in a qualifier. He played assuredly for Celtic in Milan while Craig Gordon looked nervous in the 0-0 draw with Slovenia… “We have 10 days together and that’s good, we will work together twice a day,” he said. “I am not happy about what we do with our attacking set-pieces. I am happy with the defending of set-pieces, apart from in Holland (when Scotland lost 6-0 in the Euro 2004 playoff). ” It was thought that a paternity suit might mean Carew was in court this week rather in Scotland, but he has agreed to provide a DNA sample to investigators. The forward, now with Besiktas, can infuriate his compatriots with his inconsistency but he has scored 11 times in 40 internationals and would walk into Scotland’s team. Vogts also name-checked attacking midfielders Frode Johnsen, Magne Hoset and Martin Andrese, plus full-back John Arne Riise’s threat from set-pieces and throw-ins as dangers to Scotland, but he could have added Steffen Iversen to that list. The former Tottenham forward is in fine form for Valerenga and will either play beside Carew in a 4-4-2 or wide right in a 4-5-1.

Sven contrast is striking
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 1, 2004
The dispute was part of professional rugby’s growing pains and, although unedifying while it lasted, ended satisfactorily. Another significant difference, however, was Woodward’s strong and public disapproval. Eriksson break rejected by FA
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 3, 2004
He told the committee that at least 30 of the 48 UEFA countries outside the United Kingdom had a break. The FA will hope the news does not affect Eriksson’s plans to stay on in his job. He has been offered a two-year extension to his contract, which expires in 2006, and the FA plan to have an informal meeting with him this month to discuss his plans and are hopeful of him continuing after Euro 2004. The Big Interview: Frank Lampard
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Oct 3, 2004
With the team’s help, he can be the best” — Jose Mourinho Both Chelsea managers, immediate past and present, can justifiably claim to have helped the most improved player in English football, but the real credit for Frank Lampard’s rise to international prominence belongs to the man himself. Nobody lingers longer on the training ground, which may not be unconnected with the fact that he has more long-playing records than Decca, after 114 consecutive appearances in the Premiership. Mourinho works his Chelsea charges harder than most, but Lampard habitually stays on after the rest have gone, honing his skills and fuelling reserves of stamina second to none. The results are increasingly impressive. A bit-part player on the periphery for England six months ago, he is now one of the first names on Sven-Göran Eriksson’s teamsheet. He was an ever-present at Euro 2004, has started 11 of the past 12 internationals and has scored five times in the past eight. At Chelsea his stock could hardly be higher. Mourinho, like Ranieri before him, rotates others, but Lampard is indispensable. The new manager was an avid admirer from day one. On taking up his appointment, he said he was not prepared to discuss individual players, but immediately made an exception, adding that he “loved” Lampard — “and you can write that”.

Cole fires Chelsea past Liverpool
iAfrica.com – Oct 3, 2004
In the absence of Liverpool’s injured skipper Steven Gerrard, the substitute did his chances of starting for England against Wales in the World Cup qualifier next Saturday no harm when he half-volleyed in a Frank Lampard free-kick in the 64th minute. Blues striker Didier Drogba limped off injured 38 minutes in and without a specialist forward on the bench, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho sent on Cole to deputise up front. The midfielder did not let his manager down and extended Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season while condemning Liverpool to a fourth straight away defeat. “I have been trying to get in the box more and it’s easy to score when I get service like Frank’s cross today,” said Cole. “Now we are right up there with Arsenal and we just have to keep going. ”

The game pitted Mourinho, who masterminded Porto’s success, against Rafael Benitez who guided Valencia to the UEFA Cup title, both managers new to their posts and under pressure to deliver trophies. Mourinho fielded the same side for the third consecutive match… With his only remarkable intervention in the game, Salif Diao brought down Alexei Smertin 30 yards out. Lampard crossed the free-kick in low for Cole who, running across the face of goal, side-footed past Kirkland. In search of an equaliser, Benitez introduced Euro 2004 top scorer Milan Baros, Steve Finnan and Dietmar Hamann, but it was to no avail as Chelsea completed an seventh clean sheet in eight Premiership matches.

BBC SPORT | Football | Europe | Uefa vows racism crackdown
BBC News – Oct 1, 2004
“There were chants and banners held up by Croatian fans, so we had the sound tracks examined and translated, and we then fined the Croatian Federation. “We go to great lengths to investigate and punish clubs or federations – we have a policy of zero tolerance. ”

The heavy punishment handed out by Uefa to Roma after recent crowd trouble at their Champions League games showed Uefa meant business, he said, although he said abusive behaviour was a slightly different matter. “If we were looking into physical aggression it would be a different matter.

Giggs fired by patriot games
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Oct 3, 2004
In the past 15 years, followers of the England team have had to watch “magicians” such as John Salako, Steve Guppy and Alan Thompson line up on its left flank. A few lucky ones, in the summer of 1989, were able to see Ryan Giggs. Giggs not only wore an England shirt that year, but also a captain’s armband, as skipper of the England Schoolboys team. Why did he never go on to play for the country at senior level? “It’s the question,” he says, “that’s bugged me more than any other. ” Giggs spent the first seven years of his life in Cardiff. He still sometimes wears a Prince of Wales ring given to him by his grandparents. He was so homesick when he moved to Manchester that “I always seemed to be on the train back to Wales in those days, every school holidays”… “In fact, I played for Wales Under-16s against an England side that was more or less the one I’d captained the year before. ” When Wales were drawn in England’s World Cup group this year, he was “delighted. We’d just lost our Euro 2004 playoff and everyone in the Wales squad was so disappointed. All of a sudden we were handed a chance to play England — what we always wanted”. As well as the novel experience of being in the Old Trafford away dressing room, there will be the weirdness of facing Gary Neville. “I’ve been going past Nev in training and saying, ‘Get used to it!’ ” Giggs says. Is he glad Neville has returned in time to face Wales after a broken knee? “Oh yeah!” Another United teammate he will come up against is Wayne Rooney.

Speed aims to repeat historic win
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Oct 3, 2004
“We’re not down in the doldrums like teams usually are when a new manager comes in. If you’re a team, you can achieve anything, and that’s what Sparky’s always emphasised. Wales might not have as many quality players as other countries, but if you’re a team, you can achieve something. “If Greece can win Euro 2004, there’s no reason why Wales can’t beat England. England have got fantastic players, there’s no doubt about that, but if you look at it as a one-off game, anything can happen. We think we can win. We know we can do it.

Grit can thwart French force
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Oct 3, 2004
The apparent questioning last week of Thierry Henry’s appetite for the cause was another clear sign of the manager’s vulnerability. No doubt Kerr will be observing Domenech’s rebuilding efforts and concluding that his own are proceeding rather smoothly in comparison. It was difficult not to detect a note of glee in Kerr’s voice when he spoke of the uncertainty surrounding Zidane’s position after Euro 2004. Of course, there is a corollary to all this. If Domenech’s summit meetings with senior players like Henry and Robert Pires produce the right response, there is every chance the French will be desperate to atone for two insipid performances. For Kerr, there is an even starker bottom line. It is this: if Ireland play like they did in their last two away qualifying matches, both in Switzerland, even a scratch French team could sweep them away.

O’Neill rounds on critics
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 1, 2004
My experience in the game tells me that the next 18 months are vital to his development because he is not 17, he is 23 next month. “Liam could have flourished here in that period. We are in a position to give him everything to suit his career. He could have fulfilled his desires and ambitions with us. “Manchester United are a massive club, possibly the biggest in the world, and he knows the quality of opposition he faces there just to get into the team… “Somewhat conveniently, Miller is suffering from a pelvic injury which will rule him out of action for six-eight weeks and is unlikely to feature regularly for the first team before his departure. New signing Stephen Pearson could make his debut at home to Ross County today, however. Meanwhile, Sweden’s biggest newspaper has started a petition to persuade Celtic striker Henrik Larsson to play for Sweden in Euro 2004. Tabloid Aftonbladet asked readers to join their campaign to persuade the 32-year-old to come out of retirement. Rangers are unable to estimate a date for the return of new signing Gavin Rae, who aggravated a hamstring injury after only 34 minutes of his debut in the 3-0 defeat by Celtic last weekend. The Scotland midfielder has already been treated by a German specialist. “Gavin has seen one of the best experts in the field and he will go back next week for a second course of treatment,” said manager Alex McLeish.

Berti to fight for Saturday fixtures
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Oct 3, 2004
To emphasise his point, Scotland last week announced that their key qualifier match with Norway this Saturday at Hampden was a 52,000 sell-out, while last month’s midweek 0-0 draw with Slovenia attracted a crowd of only 38,278. Scotland’s best home performances under Vogts, the victory over Holland and draw with Germany, have also come on Saturdays while many of the worst have come in midweek. Vogts claims he has persuaded Sven-Göran Eriksson, England’s manager, to support his case and discussed it with Europe’s other international managers at a Euro 2004 post-mortem in Stockholm. The issue will be discussed further at a meeting of the Uefa technical development committee, of which Vogts is a member, in Madrid on October 28. “Scottish supporters come from all over the country,” said Vogts. “They come from the north, the south, even from England, and they need three or four hours in the car to come and watch the national team. On a Wednesday night it might be raining, the game might be live on TV and the atmosphere is not so good… I will fight for Saturday-Wednesday dates when we play double headers. I spoke to Sven and he said, ‘It’s not so bad’, but then I asked him what would happen with under-21 games? When would they play and reminded him of the situation of Sunday and Monday games with the TV contracts, and after that he said, ‘Okay, we need four days — Saturdays, Wednesdays’. ” Vogts said he would accept the compromise of the second match of double headers being played on Tuesdays, provided that Saturdays were kept sacrosanct. “Saturdays-Tuesdays would be okay as long as opponents have the same arrangement. It’s not only Scotland who like to play on Saturdays. Most of the other nations do too.

Footie match spawns tribute CD
BBC News – Oct 2, 2004
Land of My Fathers, understood to be the first of its kind, features a track by the team’s former skipper Vinnie Jones. Other recordings include Can’t Take My Eyes Off You by mid Wales musician Ian Gomm. But it is not all music, there is also a section from the movie Zulu. The roll call of men awarded the Victoria Cross in the battle at Rorke’s Drift features and is narrated by Richard Burton… Meanwhile, ex-soccer hardman turned Hollywood actor Jones sings a track called Woolly Bully. Cherry Red Records, which claim to be the world’s only record label dedicated to producing football CDs, said copies of the tribute to Mark Hughes’ men had been sent to the Millennium Stadium ahead of the World Cup qualifier on 9 October. Company spokesman, Doug Shipton, said: “We’ve got CDs about the English and Scottish teams so we thought we’d release one for Wales. “But this is especially for the Wales England match.
