Baghdad looks ahead – to bid for the World Cup
Guardian Unlimited – Oct 6, 2004
But sports officials in the troubled country are discussing a bid to host football’s World Cup – and they are asking England for advice about how to go about it. Preliminary talks have taken place between the Iraqi football association and its Jordanian counterpart about a joint attempt to stage football’s showpiece tournament, Crown Prince Feisal al-Hussein of Jordan has revealed. Germany will host the World Cup in 2006, after England’s bid ended in abject defeat, and South Africa in 2010, so the next possible opportunity will be in 2014. The crown prince, whose elder brother Abdullah is king of Jordan, is in the UK for talks with sports minister Richard Caborn and Lord Coe, chairman of the bid committee for a London 2012 Olympic Games. “A lot depends on what the region is going to look like in four or five years,” said Prince Feisal. “The situation at the moment would make any bid ludicrous, but I think the next bid for the World Cup is in three or four years… But sports officials in the troubled country are discussing a bid to host football’s World Cup – and they are asking England for advice about how to go about it. England to meet Spain
BBC News – Oct 5, 2004
It will be the first international to be staged at the famous Madrid stadium since a World Cup 2002 qualifier against Israel in 2000. England have several players currently at Real Madrid, with David Beckham joining in 2003 and Michael Owen and Jonathan Woodgate signing this summer. England are next in action when they play Wales at Old Trafford on Saturday in a World Cup 2006 qualifier.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Speed ready for English test
BBC News – Oct 5, 2004
This Saturday at Old Trafford Speed, now a veteran of 83 internationals, will lead his team out for their crunch World Cup qualifier. But Speed is determined his team will not get caught up in the emotion of the occasion. It has been a disappointing start to Wales’ 2006 World Cup qualification campaign – with draws against Azerbaijan and Northern Ireland – and Speed is fully focused on picking up some badly needed points. “There have only been two games but we slipped up in both of them,” Speed told BBC Sport. “That means we have to pick up points elsewhere – and that elsewhere is England on Saturday and Poland four days later. “We need a minimum of four points from the two games and whether we pick up the win against England or Poland it does not matter.

FIFA fines Italy, Netherlands, France
USA Today – Oct 6, 2004
FIFA also unanimously approved a code of ethics which includes issues such as discrimination, conduct, bribery, gift acceptance, payment for mediation and sanctions. “It is important for FIFA,” Siegler said. “There is a lot of money in football, people might be tempted. There are a lot of dangers and it’s important to outline what is ethical and what is not. ”
In seeking to provide more rest time for players before the next World Cup, FIFA expects to ratify in December a proposal that all national associations conclude their domestic league and cup schedules by May 14, 2006. That would ensure an eight-day rest period for players, followed by a 17-day training period ahead of the June 9 start of the World Cup in Germany. FIFA increased the bonuses for the 32 finalists at the 2006 World Cup to $263 million from the $190 million in 2002, an increase of 38%, and ruled that confederation champions from Europe and South America are no longer obligated to take part in the Confederations Cup… ”

Jeremy Bloom on D-spins and John Elway
USOlympicTeam.com – Oct 5, 2004
An avid skier who began hitting the slopes at the age of three on Keystone Mountain, Bloom?s first World Cup win came in 2002 when he became the overall mogul Champion, the youngest and first to ever win it their first year on the tour. He was also an Olympian that same year at the Winter Games in Salt Lake. As a four-time World Cup mogul winner, a football All-America pick his freshman year, one of Sports Illustrated for Women’s ?Sexiest Men in Sports?, and a ski designer who created skis named “The Rebellion”, Jeremy Bloom, a former NCAA football player for the University of Colorado, is now solely focusing on skiing and the 2006 Winter Games. Q1: Is there anything specific that Colorado Springs offers for your training? And, where else have you trained?Jeremy Bloom: Every time I come here, it really allows me to focus on training. The last three years I was in Boulder, Colo. with the University of Colorado football team. Now I?m going into new territory in the sense that I?ve never had these months dedicated to ski training… We go to Chile in the summer and that?s my favorite place to ski because the snow is so good. I also like to go to Whistler Blackcomb in Canada. Q2: How has your training for 2006 differed from 2002? Jeremy Bloom: In 2002, I really over-trained. I wanted to kill myself and do everything because that?s just the mentality that I have. This year I?m taking a much smarter approach to my training. It?s still difficult but I?m giving myself enough time to recover each day so I?m building instead of regressing. I focus mainly on the objective at hand.

Frings will miss Germany friendly
CNN International – Oct 5, 2004
Goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has been rested, while striker Kevin Kuranyi, who has scored four goals in his last two internationals, is injured and will also be missing when the 19-strong squad heads for Tehran on Thursday. Saturday’s match will be 2006 World Cup hosts Germany’s first game in Tehran. The two sides have played just once, a World Cup group match in 1998 which Germany won 2-0. "We want to make further progress after Austria and Brazil. We want to push forward quickly, play with confidence, show aggressiveness and win," Klinsmann said on Tuesday in reference to his first two matches in charge. Germany beat Austria 3-1 in August and played well in a 1-1 draw with Brazil in Berlin a month ago… The parties agreed to a further meeting on October 21 after the DFB AGM. Meanwhile the coach has received support from DFB president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, who said on Tuesday that it was important that a compromise situation be found. "After 25 years in professional football, I have realised that it is important not to push coaches into a corner. They need to have a little bit of space," he said.

Daily Times – Leading News Resource of Pakistan
Daily Times – Oct 7, 2004
? Speaking at the end of two days of meetings, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said FIFA, in agreement with coaching experts, was keen to tackle the problem which has been on the increase leading to a number of players retiring early from international soccer. ?There has been a lot of talk about players being too tired and referees lacking consistency at recent major tournaments and on the whole I would agree with that talk,? Blatter said. Under the proposals, which FIFA plans to ratify at its Executive Committee meeting in December, national associations will have to end their domestic league and cup schedules by May 14 2006. There would then be an eight-day rest period, before players join their national sides for 17 days of preparation, leading up to the start of the World Cup in Germany on June 9… ?These may sometimes just be so-called fashion drugs, but they still set a bad example,? the FIFA president insisted. ?Doping is like pregnancy, in so far as you cannot say that someone is only a little bit doped. ? Blatter also announced a review of the Olympic football tournament, possibly changing the rule that allows teams to field three players over the age of 23. ?Gabriel Heinye played for the champions Argentina at the Olympics and in the Copa America before that and he is now a key player for Manchester United. ?But Roberto Ayala and Kily Gonzales did the same and have been out for practically two and a half months because they were tired or injured. We have to take care of the game,? he added.

Baxter in selection dilemma
Independent Online – Oct 6, 2004
Baxter can, however, complicate matters by adding Steven Pienaar to the selection puzzle on the right wing. But would it be wise to remove his team’s best playmaker from the heart of the midfield?

Pienaar is not entirely lost out wide, but his best in the Bafana shirt has been and will probably always be in an attacking role behind the strike force. Zuma and Arendse should be left to fight it out for the right-wing berth. Arendse has been in sublime form since joining Orlando Pirates from Santos at the start of the season… It’s very exciting to be in the same squad as these guys. I hope I get to play alongside them. ”

His wonderful football talent apart, it is this ability to remain humble which makes Arendse special. He does not take the game for granted. He knows how fleeting success can be. Shaun Bartlett and Bradley Carnell on Tuesday pulled out of the match because of injuries.

Luyindula called in for Trezeguet against Ireland
SI.com – Oct 5, 2004
"A third of the public will be supporting the visitors. " The French Football Federation made 25,000 tickets available to Ireland. "It’s not when you are world champions that you need supporters," said Silvestre. "It’s when you are struggling. If the fans want to see us in the 2006 World Cup they have to come on Saturday. If the fans want to see us in the 2006 World Cup they have to come on Saturday. "I’m aware that a match against Ireland doesn’t have the appeal of one against Brazil. But if we want to play Brazil again we first have to beat Ireland. We can’t skip steps. Ferguson ignores Berti talk and insists there is Norway Scots can…
Edinburgh Evening News – Oct 7, 2004
Berti has blooded quite a number of players but when you look at it now it’s pretty much a settled side apart from the injuries. ” Ferguson’s debut came just after Scotland had played in the World Cup finals in France, the game in Vilnius being the opening exchange in the qualifying campaign for Euro 2000, a tournament the Scots failed to make just as they have been absent from the finals of the two major competitions since, the 2002 World Cup in the Far East and Euro 2004. It’s a record Ferguson is desperate to correct although he believes the World Cup in 2006 was a more realistic target than this summer’s European Championship in Portugal. He said: “I thought that Euro 2004 was asking a bit too much although we did well enough to reach the play-offs. But now we have to qualify, for a couple of the lads it might be their last chance to get to a major tournament. “I am certainly desperate to do so. That’s the one thing I am missing in my career, playing in a major tournament for my country – it’s something I’d love to do.

Pacific Islanders await Australia in key matchup

"We’ve rediscovered our national unity through football," Adrian Wickham, president of the Solomon Islands Football Federation, told the Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday. Australia and the Solomons will play again next year in 2006 World Cup qualifying, with the winner advancing to a playoff against the fifth-ranked South American team. The Solomons advanced to the final against Australia after a 2-2 draw in Adelaide four months ago. They returned home to a tumultuous welcome as thousands of fans lined the route from the airport to the local stadium, turning a 10-minute drive into a three-hour impromptu parade. Parliament was suspended as the prime minister and members of his government met the players at the airport. The Herald reported that the response has been so huge for Saturday’s match that all 21,150 tickets for the first-leg match at the Lawson Tama Stadium in the capital Honiara have sold out.
