BBC SPORT | Football | African | Adebayor: New kid on the block
BBC News – Oct 18, 2004
He scored the winner as Togo saw off Mali in their last World Cup qualifier and returned to France to score the goal that gave Monaco a valuable point in their 1-1 draw at Metz on Saturday. A glance at the goalscoring charts proves Adebayor’s quality – after ten French league games, he has notched five strikes, making him the joint second-highest marksman in Le Championnat. Adebayor’s record in the 2006 Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers is even better; after five Group One games, he has netted five goals, a record only Botswana’s Dipsy Selolwane can match. Former Nigeria captain Stephen Keshi, now Togo’s coach, is – not surprisingly – a fan. “Adebayor is almost of the same quality as Nigeria’s Nwankwo Kanu,” Keshi told BBC Sport. “He is a very talented player, but talent alone does not play the game. You have to work hard.

AFC general secretary Peter Vellapan warned the two teams against any ?funny business? in the November 17 tie, which China must win by a wide margin to have any hope of travelling to Germany in 2006. Velappan?s comments come after a leading Chinese sports newspaper urged China Football Association head Yan Shiduo to lean on his counterparts in Hong Kong to throw the match. ?When the cat asks the mouse not to eat him, then this is a real football revolution,? said the Oriental Sports Daily. ?What he (Yan) must do is use that thick magnetic voice of his to recite to his beloved Hong Kong compatriots the saying that ?blood is thicker than water?,? the paper said.

End for Vogts long overdue
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Oct 17, 2004
“I remember at the time of recruiting Berti it was not an easy task. You remember the other three members of the final shortlist were Phillipe Troussier, Bruce Rioch and Nevio Scala. After consultation with various people in football and checking on availabilities, Berti was clearly the best candidate.

Beckham must not be allowed to get away with just an apology

First that they have two classes of discipline – one for players who are famous and one for those who are not. Even more disgraceful will be the message that is sent all over the world – morality in football in England has been abandoned. If blatant cheating can be so easily condoned at the top level, what hope is there for those who are trying to hold back the tide of rule breaking at grassroots level? Surprisingly, despite the shabby way the FA behaved when they reneged on former FA chairman Bert Millichip’s agreement that Germany could host the 2006 World Cup in return for England hosting Euro 96, English football is still looked up to internationally as a model to be respected. My sympathy goes also to the citizens of Baku who were the most disappointed when Beckham failed to travel there last week. Thousands of Azeris had bought tickets for the England match in the hope of seeing him play in the Tofik Bakhramov Stadium. The stadium was half-empty for the matches against Wales and Northern Ireland. On the wages most people earn in Azerbaijan, few people could afford to attend all three games.

Samba stars eye 2006 success
BBC News – Oct 18, 2004
It has only been done once, by Brazil in 1958 when the tournament was held in Sweden. There is no doubt that Germany 2006 represents Brazil’s best chance for a long time of pulling it off. Their firepower in the final third of the field – the combination of Ronaldo, Kaka and Ronaldinho, with Adriano on the bench – stands comparison with any forward line they have ever fielded. They are also without the problems that dogged their last two European campaigns… It has only been done once, by Brazil in 1958 when the tournament was held in Sweden. Four years earlier just two of Brazil’s players had been based in Europe.

Hislop?s contract with English Premiership side Portsmouth runs out next summer and getting a new one is the priority for the 198cms giant as he seeks to extend a distinguished career by a further two years. The World Cup qualifiers took Hislop?s tally of international caps to a modest 17 spread over more than a decade, but much of that has been of Hislop?s own choosing. There are further qualifiers in February but the defeat by Mexico makes Trinidadian qualification for the 2006 World Cup finals less likely and Hislop, who has played in England for Reading, Newcastle, West Ham and Portsmouth, will decide his international future between now and then. ?I will talk it over with my family and see what is best. I turned down an invitation to play for Trinidad last year but the time seemed right to return,? said the keeper. ?I don?t think I will be playing international football much longer and these two games may have been my last. It is getting more difficult now.

Diouf gets deferred ban
BBC News – Oct 17, 2004
The punishment means that any future ill-discipline by Diouf will result in a six-month ban from Senegal’s national team. The sanction comes after Senegal coach Guy Stephan threw the Bolton Wanderers player off the squad that was due to play Liberia in a 2006 World Cup qualifier on 10 October. Diouf’s expulsion followed him being spotted in a Dakar nightclub on the eve of the Teranga Lions’ departure to Monrovia. Ironically the game against Liberia was meant to be Diouf’s first for Senegal after serving a four-match ban imposed for violent conduct during the African Cup of Nations quarter-final in February. The former African Footballer of the Year has since apologised for the incident, saying: “I regret not being part of the travelling party. ”

Despite Diouf’s absence, Senegal went on to beat Liberia 3-0 and they retained the leadership of their group at the halfway point of the African qualifiers.

Germany seeks 15,000 volunteers for World Cup
Expatica – Oct 18, 2004
At least 1,000 volunteers will be working at each of the 12 World Cup venues to welcome and help visitors to the event, tournament organising committee chief Franz Beckenbauer said. With more than a million people expected to visit Germany for the tournament, the volunteers are seen as a crucial part of making the event a success. “We need drivers who know their cities like a navigation system, we are looking for fluent World Cup ambassadors who know their road atlas off by heart, we need media helpers who practically know what a journalist needs better than the journalist,” Beckenbauer said in an organising committee press statement. Volunteers will be needed to assist the 32 teams, to help VIP visitors, and work in accreditation and press centres.

The local football association wrote to Asian Football Confederation chief Peter Velappan after he made the comments ahead of the city?s qualifier clash with China in Guangzhou on November 17. China must win by a wide margin to have any hope of travelling to Germany in 2006 and Velappan said if there was any ?funny business, they will face the music?. The comment came after the Chinese-language newspaper Oriental Sports Daily urged the Hong Kong team to be gracious and give the motherland the game. ?There shouldn?t be any suspicion on Hong Kong.

2004 African Footballer of the Year:

The reason for this is largely hinged on the quality of the side he plays for, and by extension his post Tunisia 2004 performance for Nigeria. Unlike Eto’o and Drogba who are featuring in the money spinning Champions League, Okocha is tied down to modest Bolton whose main objective is to survive the relegation test in the Premiership at the end of the season. On a wider scope, both Drogba and Eto’o are in the full swing of the 2006 World Cup campaign with their national teams. Eto’o has continued to inspire the sagging Indomitable Lions by posting three goals while Drogba has notched up two goals in the series to set Ivory Coast up for its first appearance at a World Cup finals. The Eagles continue their quest for a fourth World Cup ticket on the trot without depending more on their influential midfielder. Nigeria have prosecuted five matches with Okocha playing only in two matches. The recent FIFA World Footballer of year shortlist which precluded Okocha is assumed, even among Nigerian watchers to have once again set Eto’o and Drogba ahead of Okocha for the CAF Award.

The two-time European number one added: “Wentworth has been great towards myself and my family. This golf course is my true home golf course now. It’s been a great week. ”

Westwood, 31, the 2000 champion who had beaten Els in both of their previous meetings, said: “I’m feeling awful and to be honest I have been feeling

BBC SPORT | Football | African | Malawi cracks down on hooligans
BBC News – Oct 18, 2004
But when the home side only managed a draw at Malawi’s biggest ground, the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, fans threw stones towards the players. Referee Eugene Colembi from Angola was struck by one of the stones, but was not injured fortunately. The incident repeated scenes of the previous weekend when Malawi’s national side drew 2-2 with Tunisia in a 2006 World Cup qualifier. Malawi’s Minister of Sport, Henry Chimunthu Banda, told the BBC that the president was not happy with Saturday’s violence, which resulted in thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to property. “The president was so angry that he telephoned me soon after the match issuing the orders,” the minister said. “He has also ordered the formation of a taskforce that would look at the reasons behind these acts of football violence and hooliganism to try and stop the problems once and for all. ”

The minister said he would name members of the taskforce before the end of this week.

And to increase the competition level for freestyle sports, the Artificial, Indoor and Mountain Series was launched last year. Competitors take part at events around the UK, culminating with the final in the Alps. A number of the competitors have gone on to compete in World Cup events and are aiming to take part in the 2006 Winter Olympics. Baxter himself has been ski racing since the age of 11 and although he has tried freestyle skiing, he prefers the slalom. “At my age, I don’t think my knees would take it anyway,” he added.

BBC SPORT | Football | African | Siang’a rejects Kenya
BBC News – Oct 18, 2004
“They both have experience with national sides and should be promoted before a foreign coach is hired,” Sianga’a said. The Normalisation Committee, headed by former Olympian Kipchoge Keino, is charged with the administration of football in the East African country until a new executive board is elected for the Kenya Football Federation. Whoever takes up the national coaching job will have to lead the Harambee Stars in a Group Five 2006 World Cup qualifier against Guinea on 17 November.
