Germany to kick off 2006 World Cup
CNN – Oct 27, 2004
The match takes on June 9, 2006, in Munich’s new World Cup stadium, but Germany’s opponents will not be known until the draw on December 9 2005. It will be the first time since the 1970 World Cup — when hosts Mexico drew 0-0 with the Soviet Union — that the staging nation has played the tournament opener. Germany will head Group A with the other group matches on June 14 in Dortmund and June 20 in Berlin, which also hosts the final on July 9, 2006. Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann had recently expressed reservations of having to play the first game owing to the immense pressure on players. Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann had recently expressed reservations of having to play the first game owing to the immense pressure on players. But he said after the announcement: "We are delighted that we can play the opening match in Munich’s new football temple. "We welcome the early FIFA decision because it allows us to fine-tune our World Cup preparations. " The German organizing committee head Franz Beckenbauer agreed: "This is a good decision by FIFA. A successful result in the opening match will allow our team to start the World Cup with a bang. "FIFA said it preferred Germany over Brazil because the South American defending champions were not yet qualified for the event.

Germans get no special World Cup ticket treatment
Expatica – Oct 28, 2004
The only good news was that a majority of tickets offered in the cheapest category (EUR 35) will be sold almost entirely to German fans. “We are aware that we won’t have enough tickets and will be criticised for it. There will be disappointments,” said organising committee chief Franz Beckenbauer.

Stage is set for another Safa power struggle
Independent Online – Oct 26, 2004
When Danny Jordaan was asked to temporarily relinquish his “real job” of South African Football Association chief executive officer – a position he had held since 1997 – and was seconded to South Africa’s 2006 World Cup bid, Hack was appointed as acting Safa chief executive officer. After South Africa’s 2006 bid heartbreak, Hack was more than happy to step back into the shadows and allow Jordaan to resume his old job as Safa’s head honcho. When South Africa decided to bid again for the 2010 World Cup, Jordaan was again seconded to help the country secure football’s Holy Grail, and Mokoena was appointed “acting” Safa CEO in March 2003.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Ferguson supports Vogts’…
BBC News – Oct 27, 2004
Vogts’ future is under serious threat after a poor start to the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign. “I feel sorry for Berti Vogts. He’s done the job as honestly as he can possibly do it,” said Ferguson. “What he’s done very well is let young players get a chance in the Scotland team because you don’t have a future if you don’t have young players. ”

The Manchester United manager, who was Scotland’s coach at the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico, insists Vogts does not have the quality of players which were available to him almost two decades ago.

ESPN.com – NCF – Florida fires football coach Zook
ESPN – Oct 26, 2004
“I think the situation got outof control, even for him. Zook also lost support within the university in recent weeks because of an incident involving a campus fraternity. Members of the football team got into a fight with members of a university fraternity. Foley asked Zook to go to the house and serve as a peacemaker. Instead, Zook lost his temper and became argumentative with the students. Foley said the same thing about the mounting losses — many ofthem late collapses. The Gators blew fourth-quarter leads against Tennessee and LSUthis season, and did the same against Miami, Mississippi andFlorida State last year.

Scottish stay of execution for Vogts
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 26, 2004
The German has been a lame duck since the 1-1 draw in Moldova 13 days ago, which meant that qualification for the World Cup finals in two years’ time was unlikely. Yesterday had been set aside for all 11 members of the Scottish Football Association’s board to meet and decide on the issue. As it stands, the board are not due to meet until Nov 4, as the first Thursday of every month is a regular slot for the 11 powerbrokers of Scottish football to get together. An earlier meeting could still be called, however, especially as the national team’s next game, an Easter Road friendly with Sweden on Nov 17, is fast approaching… “Compensation negotiations appear to be the root of the protracted nature of the removal process. Vogts made it clear after the Moldova setback, which left the Scots with only two points from their first three qualifying games, that he did not intend to resign. The former World Cup winner may have plenty of critics, who insist he is limited in the organisational, tactical and communication stakes, but the same cannot be said for his legal representative. A Swiss-based lawyer, Andi Gross, is handling the German’s affairs and is understood to be adopting a hard-line approach. A substantial compensation sum will therefore have to be paid to remove Vogts, who was contracted up to the 2006 finals. Mitchell was unable to shed any light on negotiations between Gross and the SFA’s chief executive, David Taylor, and said: “There has been considerable speculation but I can’t comment on that. “It is estimated it could cost around £500,000 to dismiss Vogts, who has presided over only nine victories in 32 games, including a 4-1 win over a Hong Kong XI which the SFA recognise but FIFA do not.

BBC News – Oct 28, 2004
The Frenchman, who took was the caretaker coach of the Indomitable Lions for their final two 2002 World Cup qualifiers, has also offered to step in and coach the Indomitable Lions should he be needed. “If they (football authorities) call me to bring my expertises, I won’t hesitate,” he said. Beckenbauer and Platini vying for UEFA spot
rte.ie – Oct 26, 2004
“There is a growing trend at UEFA to back top footballers for the big jobs,” explained Gallard. “Beckenbauer and Platini will both be considered. ”
Beckenbauer, head of the 2006 World Cup organising committee, is regarded as one of the finest ever defenders, winning the 1974 World Cup as a player before guiding West Germany to the 1990 World Cup as coach. FIFA president Sepp Blatter has already backed ‘the Kaiser’ for the post. Platini was an elegant playmaker for France and Juventus and was crowned European footballer of the year three years in a row (1983, 84, 85).

York University to house Argos, soccer group
cbc.ca – Oct 28, 2004
The CFL team and the university, located north of the downtown core, have joined forces to build a $70 million, 25,000-seat stadium on campus at York, officials said Monday. Two weeks ago, the University of Toronto abandoned plans for a downtown stadium, citing escalating costs… “The Grey Cup game will come back to Toronto before the end of the decade for sure,” CFL commissioner Tom Wright said, adding temporary seating could increase capacity to more than 40,000 for the league’s championship game. The new stadium also will be home to the Canadian Soccer Association and host matches for the 2007 world under-21 men’s championships. The tournament is second only to the World Cup in size. The Varsity Stadium plan, estimated at $80 million, involved a partnership between the University of Toronto and CSA, and was to include an eight-lane running track, regulation-size football and soccer field as well as retail and commercial space. Kevan Pipe, chief operating officer of the CSA, said the York plan was “incredibly better” than Varsity. “We do not have a running track around the stadium, so the first row of seats will be six yards from the sidelines,” he said. “The Varsity stadium model had a lot of unique design features because of the (space) limitations of the site.

FIFA rejects CFA’s proposal for extra match
People's Daily Online – Oct 26, 2004
The watchdog says the rule is part of FIFA’s constitution, and every country should obey it. Under the rule, goal difference will decide the group winner if more than one team at the top are level on points. The CFA raised the question in the wake of a warning from Asian Football Confederation General-secretary Peter Velappan of match fixing. China dropped from group leader to second place after a loss to.

Daily Times – Leading News Resource of Pakistan
Daily Times – Oct 26, 2004
The Australian Soccer Association on Monday confirmed the Socceroos would take on the Norwegians at Fulham?s Craven Cottage ground in south London on November 16. ?This will be an important match for us as we continue our build-up for next year?s Confederations Cup and World Cup qualifiers,? Farina said in an ASA statement. ?I expect Norway to provide very strong opposition with many of their players competing in Europe?s best leagues. ?The vast majority of our players who missed the matches against the Solomon Islands through injury will be available again for selection and we hope that we can provide a great spectacle for the crowd,? he said… ?I would especially like to urge all Aussies in London to come along to the game and show their support as we look to establish a solid base of Socceroo fans in London for future matches. ? Mark Viduka, Marco Bresciano, skipper Craig Moore, Tim Cahill, John Aloisi and Stan Lazaridis all missed the two matches against the Solomons through injury, although Liverpool?s Harry Kewell played one half of the Sydney game as he was restricted by injury. Norway, who qualified for the 1994 and 1998 World Cups and are 37th in the FIFA world rankings, will be tough opponents for Australia, who are looking for hard matches ahead of next year?s qualifying for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. Australia and Norway have only met once before at senior level with Australia winning 1-0 in Sydney in January 1997. Australia?s next scheduled match will be against South Africa in Durban on February 9 next year.

Brief season concerns young stars
The Age – Oct 27, 2004
The players’ union, agents, former Socceroos and the playersthemselves believe that a season stretching six months (if thefour-week finals series is included) just does not offer enoughgame time for young players to improve. They are also worried that it would also restrict the moreestablished talents – players in their mid-20s such as SimonColosimo and Ahmad Elrich, recent national league stars who havejust broken into the senior national team squad – from featuring inenough competitive matches to consolidate their skills andfitness. Players in their position fear that such a low-key playingschedule could harm their prospects of being contenders againstseasoned European-based professionals for places in the 2006 WorldCup squad, should Australia qualify. The Professional Footballers Association is urging the ASA torethink its fixture list which, with only eight teams, leads to alopsided draw in which each club will play each other threetimes. At the very least, the PFA would like to see an evenly balanceddraw, where every club played each other twice at home and twiceaway, and the establishment of an FA Cup-style competition, wherethe top clubs from the elite state competitions would play in aknockout tournament against sides from the new national league. The ASA has plans to increase the match schedule withpost-season tournaments against Asian opponents, while successfulclubs eventually – once the Asian Football Confederation opens itsdoors – will be able to look forward to matches in the AsianChampions League. But that is in the future… The 25-year-old midfielder-defender has become a national squadregular in recent seasons, but is concerned that the scheduled21-match roster may not be enough to attract players of his ilkback to play in the revamped domestic competition. “I don’t think there are enough matches for guys who want to goto the next level, especially if they are competing with guys inEurope who are playing 40 games a season with clubs in Italy orEngland,” said Colosimo, a member of the PFA’s executivecommittee. “I want to go to the World Cup and it will be hard to competeplaying that amount of games and having a break of five-and-a-halfmonths through the year,” Colosimo said from Malaysia. The Melbourne United consortium, which lost out to MelbourneVictory in its bid to win the Victorian franchise for the newleague, said the rejection of its application was an opportunitylost to take the game to the people of Melbourne. Beckenbauer likely to be next UEFA presidency

[AFP]But the man who won soccer’s biggest
prize as captain in 1974 and coach in 1990 added that he was focused for now on

England’s Geoffrey Thompson or Mathieu Sprengers from the Netherlands, Germany’s
SID sport news agency quoted UEFA communication director William Gaillard as
saying at a meeting in Frankfurt. Rumors that Beckenbauer, currently president of Germany’s World Cup
organizing committee, might be a candidate for the UEFA job circulated at the
German football association’s congress in Osnabrueck at the weekend. UEFA recently imposed an age limit of 70 on members of the organization’s
committees, which means Johansson, 74, must step down in 2006.
