Vogts, the first foreign Scotland coach, appears to be living on borrowed time in the job after seeing the team collect just two points from their opening three World Cup qualifiers for Germany 2006. But Ferguson, who played a key role in bringing the former Germany coach to Scotland, said the seeds of Scottish football?s international decline had been sown some two decades before Vogts?s arrival. ?I could see the dangers many years ago. You can go back to the early 1980s when the teachers stopped looking after the kids? football. ?That was the first downfall because schools football was disciplined and I thought it was the foundation for all the best players… ?I could see the dangers many years ago. You can go back to the early 1980s when the teachers stopped looking after the kids? football. ?That was the first downfall because schools football was disciplined and I thought it was the foundation for all the best players. ? Ferguson, who made his name as a coach at Aberdeen, took temporary charge of Scotland during the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico following the death of Jock Stein. Later that year Ferguson arrived at Old Trafford where the youth system he established produced a conveyor belt of homegrown players who played key roles in United?s trophy winning teams of the 1990s. But the Scot said it was more important to develop skills during those crucial early years rather than win youth games. He added: ?You need to concentrate on the practice part rather than the playing because as you know, anyone can play in a game of football but it doesn?t mean to say you are a footballer.

Shehata replaces the Italian Marco Tardelli, who was sacked earlier this month following a string of poor results. Shehata will look after the national team and keep his job as coach of second division side Arab Contractors until the Egyptian Football Association’s (EFA) elections in December. “He will prepare the team for the upcoming commitments in the World Cup qualifiers,” EFA spokesman Medhat Shalaby said. “We are arranging friendlies in the next two months against European champions Greece, Zimbabwe and Gabon. ”

Egypt are fourth in Group Three with seven points, five adrift of leaders Ivory Coast. Their next 2006 World Cup qualifier is at home to second-placed Libya in March. “My main task will be boosting the players’ confidence,” 55-year old Shehata said. “Reaching the World Cup now is very difficult but it is not impossible. ”

Shehata, who played more than 70 times for Egypt between 1969 and 1982, has coached several local clubs including his former team Zamalek. He also guided Egypt’s under-20s to the 2003 African championship before reaching the Fifa World Youth Championship quarter-finals in the same year.

Nevertheless, Brazilian great Zico is having a go. Zico, now 51 and the national coach of Japan, is not only considering a somewhat fanciful return as a player for a non-League team in northern England, he also wants to play retired internationals in Japan?s World Cup qualifier against Singapore next month. While no-one would begrudge him pulling his boots on for Garforth Town in the Northern Counties East League, possibly along with other former Brazilian team mates Socrates and Careca, his plan to field a bunch of golden oldies has upset his bosses at the Japan Football Association (JFA). Japan have already booked their place in the final round of Asian qualifiers before the 2006 World Cup, but both the JFA and J-League clubs have reacted negatively to his plan for an old boys? reunion against Singapore. Some Japan players have also given the plan a lukewarm response and Zico is set to collide with JFA technical director Kozo Tashima when he returns from Brazil on Tuesday. ?Almost 100 percent of J-League clubs are against it,? Tashima said. ?They want Zico to pick players with a view to next year?s qualifiers… Zico, now 51 and the national coach of Japan, is not only considering a somewhat fanciful return as a player for a non-League team in northern England, he also wants to play retired internationals in Japan?s World Cup qualifier against Singapore next month. “I have been in talks with the federation’s officials and I have accepted the offer to coach the national team,” Phiri told BBC Sport on Friday. “I am now consulting with Simba officials first before starting the work. ”

Independent Online – Oct 30, 2004
tv and the SABC have long been at loggerheads over the rights to broadcast major sporting events. Now they are competing for the big one, the South African broadcast rights for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
