BBC SPORT | Football | World Football | Daei looks to 2006
BBC News – Nov 30, 2004
The 35-year-old had come under pressure in Iran from some who felt that, as his career heads towards its end, he has lost too much to function as an effective striker. But Daei then scored four goals – including his 100th – in a 7-0 win over Laos that ensured Iran went through to the next round of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. “Right now I’m just thinking about qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Iran,” Daei told BBC World Service’s World Football programme. “I’m happy with the memories of Germany – I lived and played there for five years, and made lots of good friends. “I’d love to play there in an Iran shirt. ”

World Cup dream

Daei is officially the most prolific striker in the 132-year history of international football. He was one of the first Asian footballers to play in a major European league – featuring in Germany’s Bundesliga for Bayern Munich and Hertha Berlin – and has done a great deal of work to raise the profile of Iranian football after making his debut against Oman in 1993.

Meanwhile Germany, the World Cup 2006 hosts, have announced Berlin will be their base for the tournament. He urged the German Football Federation to change their minds and they decided upon the capital. Germany have also cancelled their intended trip to South America in December 2005, with Klinsmann fearing burn-out ahead of the World Cup finals. JFF dilemma!

In addition, said the source, who did not wish to be named, Jamaican players could become ineligible for selection to English teams if the new-look Reggae Boyz don’t win enough matches and drop below 75 on the FIFA ranking list. “Yes, it is true,” confirmed FIFA agent Phil Graham, “and it has been the case for as long as I can recall – at least eight to 10 years… Former Manchester United star striker Dwight Yorke of Trinidad and Tobago was forced to apply for British citizenship a few years ago after retiring from his country’s national team. The 33 year-old was forced to do so to remain eligible for a work permit. Shortly after the senior Reggae Boyz’s elimination at the semi-final stage of the CONCACAF qualification for the 2006 World Cup Finals on Wednesday, November 17, the JFF publicly expressed its desire to shift the focus to youth development. Youth development was one of the key agenda items on the manifesto of the Crenston Boxhill-led slate, which successfully challenged the administration then led by Captain Horace Burrell. “This administration is not prepared at all to rescind on its commitment to go entirely youth,” Boxhill said in a November 22 statement prior to the start of the Digicel Cup, the regional contest that ended its first round in Jamaica on Sunday. According to Boxhill, the initial squad selected for the Digicel Cup did not represent the way forward, therefore the JFF added the full complement of the Under-20 team. “They will now form the basis of what can be called the ‘new senior team’,” he said.

Kaka is not only the key creative force for the Italian champions, he is the face of the new Brazil, who already look strong favourites for the 2006 World Cup. It is a lot of responsibility for a player who has been in European football for only 15 months. Young Latin Americans often find it hard to initially settle in European soccer but Kaka made an instant impact last season with his 10 goals and a series of outstanding displays helping to guide Milan to the title. It has been a rapid rise from the youth team of Brazilian club Sao Paulo to his current status as one of the brightest talents in the game but this season, for the first time in his career, Kaka has found it hard going. ?It has been more difficult than last year,? Kaka told Reuters in an interview, ?I am known in Italy now, the markers know me and they are tough here.

Peppered in between, Smith was number two to Andy Roxburgh when Scotland won the 1982 European Youth Championship and qualified for the quarter finals of the World Youth Cup in Mexico a year later. I was with the team every inch of the way on these wonderful journeys and, believe me, Smith played a huge part in the success story. Furthermore, he rode shotgun to Alex Ferguson in the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico again, to say nothing of teaming up again with his old chum at Old Trafford last season. Cynics might call his time at Everton a failure. Those who do won’t know the inside story of financial shenanigans. But at worst his time at Goodison Park is a wee smudge on a glittering track record. So why the hell would he want to risk flushing it all down the toilet with a team who look as if they are dancing on quicksand?

You can say what you want about Walter Smith, but he is one brave man… Scotland are so deep in the manure that a JCB would take an age to dig us out, never mind Walter Smith and a trowel. We need to throw three double sixes in tandem with a couple of snookers to win this group now. Talking of tandems, if Smith gets us to Germany in 2006 I’ll cycle there. But good luck in the new job, Waltie. And the only reason I didn’t actually put the Hampden cleaner before you in the wish list is because she never wanted it.
