Ferdinand ‘not fit’ if he wins appeal
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 3, 2004
England centre-back Ferdinand has maintained a low profile since being hit with what his employers described as a “savage” ban but, in an interview on his club’s radio station yesterday, he admitted: “My present situation is very disappointing and immensely frustrating. The thing that’s keeping me afloat is the banter amongst the boys… “By lodging an appeal Ferdinand runs the risk of having his punishment increased, but he clings to the hope that it will be significantly reduced to make him available for Euro 2004 in Portugal in June. “We will have to see how the appeal goes and then we will take it from there,” Ferdinand said. “It doesn’t matter how fit you are when you are running around the training ground, games are totally different. No matter what anyone says, it will take me a good few weeks and a few games to get match-fit again. “Injury-hit United have received a timely boost by the diagnosis that Cristiano Ronaldo’s worrying knee damage sustained during Tuesday’s Champions League draw with Porto is not as serious as first thought.

These days, though, wingers are no longer confronted by Mills the Militant. Indeed, he was actually the innocent participant when Lee Hendrie was sent off last Saturday. Not that Aston Villa’s assistant manager, Roy Aitken, apparently saw it that way after his midfielder had been dismissed. “Roy was going ballistic after the game [suggesting Mills had somehow contributed to the sending-off]. I told him, ‘What did you expect me to do? What more could I have done?’ The tackle was late, he left his foot in. I wasn’t best pleased with it, but no player would have been. “He reacted, but I didn’t roll around, holding my face… He’s a great defensive coach. Which makes it all the more mysterious that Mills has disappeared off Sven Goran Eriksson’s radar. His last game for England was as substitute against Portugal in a pre-Euro 2004 friendly back in February. “The Japan and Korea World Cup gave me the chance to prove whether I was good enough to play on the biggest stage, and I was very pleased with how I performed,” he says. “But Gary Neville came back in afterwards and everyone knows that Sven has his preferred 11 and if they’re fit, they play. That’s his philosophy. To be fair, it’s been fairly successful for him.

Nuremberg end Bayern’s winning run
CNN International – Dec 4, 2004
Two minutes later Andreas Wolf received a red card for handling in front of goal, conceding a penalty which Roy Makaay converted to equalize. Ze Roberto put Bayern in front with a 60th minute free kick that curled into the right corner only for Banovic to salvage the draw. "That was nice for the spectators but I am not happy," declared Bayern manager Felix Magath. "We threw two points away which could prove costly at the end of the season. "It it not the time to be handing out Christmas presents. "Reigning champions Werder Bremen moved to within six points of Bayern with a 6-0 drubbing of hapless Freiburg. Bremen scored three times in nine first half minutes and improved their goal difference further in the second half as Freiburg waved the white flag… "Reigning champions Werder Bremen moved to within six points of Bayern with a 6-0 drubbing of hapless Freiburg. Bremen scored three times in nine first half minutes and improved their goal difference further in the second half as Freiburg waved the white flag. Greece’s Euro 2004 hero Angelos Charisteas scored a hat-trick (29, 58, 87) with German international Miroslav Klose grabbing a brace (20, 23). "We have proved that we have not got distracted ahead of the Valencia Champions League game," said Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf. "We can now travel to Spain full of confidence. "Argentine striker Diego Klimowicz put Wolfsberg ahead at Leverkusen after four minutes with a glancing header but Ukraine international Andrei Voronin equalised shortly after the interval and Franca struck in the 89th minute to guide Bayer into eighth.

Murphy vows to battle for club and country
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 3, 2004
Murphy has only recently forced his way back into his manager’s first-choice XI and is desperate to stay there to secure a brighter future with his club and country. Above all he wants to finish his career at Anfield, playing for the club he has supported since childhood, but he also wants to mount a late run for a place in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s England squad for Euro 2004. “Spells of good form can work against you because when you reach a certain level people expect you to retain it and those people give you a bit more criticism if you fall below it. “Now, having got back in, it is a case of concentrating hard on the rest of the season… “When you get down to the last 18 months you start looking at the various options,” he said. “I want to stay here as long as possible. I am not a Steven Gerrard or Michael Owen who can go to any of the best clubs in Europe. “If I leave Liverpool I can only go down. If they want me, I’m here forever. But a club only want you to stay if you are an asset to them. “Murphy said the key to personal prosperity was being able to deal with such problems in the right way “and not spit out your dummy”.

Despite Loss, Miller Maintains Lead
Washington Post – Dec 3, 2004
I just made a few mistakes. Miller said the winning streak was not as important as triumphing in speed races last weekend in Lake Louise, Alberta. Known in the past as a slalom specialist, Miller is trying to focus on improvement this year in speed races in his bid to win the overall title. Goergl, starting 11th, tore down the course in 1 minute 13. Miller was second at 1:13… points system since 1993, when more emphasis was placed on the majors. • SOCCER: Walter Smith was hired as the national coach of Scotland, which failed to qualify for the Euro 2004 championship and stands little chance of making it to the 2006 World Cup. • HORSE RACING: Two Maryland stakes races lost their prized graded status when the American Graded Stakes Committee stripped the $150,000 Martha Washington Breeders’ Cup and $100,000 Anne Arundel Handicap of their Grade III status. One Maryland stakes race, the $100,000 Hirsch Jacobs, a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds run on Preakness Day at Pimlico, moved up from ungraded to Grade III status. — From News Services and Staff Reports © 2004 The Washington Post Company.

When the going gets tough…
go.com – Dec 4, 2004
At least it looked that way against the likes of Leeds, Wolves, Leicester and the others who are out of their depth among the giants of the game. What Henry has yet to prove is that he can perform like a master when the going gets tough, when his side are on the back foot or up against opponents who are not scared witless of his every move. After failing to shine when Arsenal needed him most in the latter stages of last season’s Champions League, his faltering displays for France at Euro 2004 did little to silence the view that Thierry Henry is not a big game performer. And this is not the first year when he has taken his side to the brink of immortality and then gone missing. The 2001 FA Cup Final was an example of a day when Arsenal needed their talisman to shine, but instead it was Liverpool’s Michael Owen who took the game by the scruff of the neck and carried off the trophy. You can throw in woeful Champions League displays against Juventus and Valencia on nights that ended Arsenal’s interest in that competition to back up such an argument. So during a period when Arsene Wenger’s team have suffered their most alarming slump in form for many a long month, the time had come for the real Thierry Henry to stand up as Birmingham visited Highbury… What Henry has yet to prove is that he can perform like a master when the going gets tough, when his side are on the back foot or up against opponents who are not scared witless of his every move. With Chelsea moving eight points clear at the top of the Premiership in the early kick off, the most celebrated performer in English football had some questions to answer.

Sad finale for Dutch clan
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 5, 2004
Mikel Arteta drove hard across the goalmouth and Frank de Boer narrowly missed connecting. Otherwise Rangers would surely have been ahead. Frank de Boer departed at half-time to be replaced by Maurice Ross and Peter Lovenkrands – who has been told by Morten Olsen, the Denmark manager, that he can yet claim a place in the Danish squad for Euro 2004 – came on for Stephen Hughes. However, it was Hearts who made the breakthrough five minutes after the break when Hutton was short with a pass back to McGregor and Hamill pounced to send a precise low drive beyond the goalkeeper. Rangers picked up the pace in response to their supporters’ grumbling but there was a general air of listlessness. Ronald de Boer replaced Mols and took the captain’s armband from his fellow countryman, who was saluted with a standing ovation as he trudged sadly from the field. However, the elder de Boer was not able to provide the spark needed for Rangers to avoid defeat… Rangers picked up the pace in response to their supporters’ grumbling but there was a general air of listlessness. pittsburghlive.com – Dec 3, 2004

These things are part of what we have to go through at times. ”

A psychologist for Team Germany
Calcutta Telegraph – Dec 5, 2004
?He?ll be a useful asset for us in coping with stress and getting out top performances,? Klinsmann said after the Heidelberg University psychologist was named to join the squad for the three-match tour of Asia from December 13 to 22. It is the first time in the 96-year history of the German FA that a psychologist has been appointed for the national team. Since taking over from Rudi Voeller in July after Germany?s humiliating first-round exit from Euro 2004, Klinsmann has imported fitness trainers from the United States to work as consultants. He has broken another taboo with the psychologist. But unlike initial grumbling over the former Germany striker?s use of consultants, the reaction has been muted partly because some players have suffered from depression and burnout. Klinsmann, 40, who moved to the US six years ago and commutes to Germany several times a month, has been impressed by the way American teams use university research. ?It?s a great assignment and a great honour to accompany the Germany team to the World Cup finals,? Hermann said… They?re put in the same category as psychiatrists. ?

Psychological counselling has become a hot topic in recent years, especially after Germany midfielder Sebastian Deisler missed much of last season for Bayern Munich and part of this season during an on-and-off battle with depression. Before Deisler?s public breakdown, Hanover 96 striker Jan Simak, once a Czech midfielder, was placed on the sick list last season after doctors ruled he could not stand the pressure of the professional game. Hermann later counselled Simak, who has returned to the game, playing for Sparta Prague this season.

Due to some problems in the 2011 season, there were concerns whether the Super Bowl XLV would go on schedule or not. It was being said that the Super Bowl 2012 was going to be dependent on the way things uncovered at the Super Bowl 2011. The smooth organization of the Super Bowl 2011 was going to be decided by the adoption of a new collective bargaining agreement between the league and the National Football Players Association.
