Year of underdog Soccer has a darker side
International Herald Tribune – Dec 29, 2004
Tevez, saying he feels hounded by the media intrusion into his love life in Buenos Aires, has already moved, in the year's most bizarre transfer, from Boca Juniors to Corinthians of São Paulo. The sale by his financially struggling Argentine club is no surprise, but the purchase by a Brazilian club similarly indebted until a mysterious London-based agency showered money at it defies belief. As to Carlos Alberto, he has not yet been one of the core Porto players plucked away to Chelsea, Barcelona or wherever. The young Brazilian grows restless, feeling unwanted at times at a club abandoned by the coach, obliged to sell star performers and with its president arrested in the referee bribery scandal spoiling Portugal's year as a magnificent Euro 2004 host. If ever you wanted evidence of how bewitching, and how transient, acclaim can be, Charisteas, Tevez and Carlos Alberto fit the bill. Charisteas, 24, tall and lean, ran like so many of the Greeks, with energy that made us gasp. Cynics whispered, and some careless journalists printed, that the Greek players had trained with the same adviser as Costas Kenteris and Katherina Thanou… The sale by his financially struggling Argentine club is no surprise, but the purchase by a Brazilian club similarly indebted until a mysterious London-based agency showered money at it defies belief. It is a rumor still being repeated, still without substantiation.

html –> Sport just kept on giving in 2004, at least until mid-September. There were the Olympics, Stanley Cup playoffs, Euro 2004 and World Cup of Hockey. The Boston Red Sox provided baseball and its fans with some of the most compelling postseason content in years. Occasionally the telecasts matched the quality of the event. Often they did not. The best produced shows on the CBC were its Saturday night football telecasts as well as Hockey Night in Canada, although the big story at Hockey Night was the controversies involving commentator Don Cherry… The Boston Red Sox provided baseball and its fans with some of the most compelling postseason content in years. Occasionally the telecasts matched the quality of the event. Often they did not. The best produced shows on the CBC were its Saturday night football telecasts as well as Hockey Night in Canada, although the big story at Hockey Night was the controversies involving commentator Don Cherry. The CBC’s work at the Athens Olympics was good but not exceptional. The telecasts ran smoothly because of the strong work of the two veteran anchors, Brian Williams and Ron MacLean, and to a lesser extent morning host Terry Leibel, whose support for the Canadians occasionally crossed over to cheerleading. TSN’s lineup of programming included the National Hockey League, Canadian football, Toronto Maple Leaf regional games, the Olympics and Euro 2004, although coverage of the soccer tournament was diminished by a weak studio panel.

RTÉ Sport: French coach set to welcome Pires back
rte.ie – Dec 28, 2004
If I did, it would mean that I have been hurt by his comments,” Domenech said in an interview in sports daily L’Equipe published on Tuesday. “I don’t make up my mind about someone from what he says but from what he does,” Domenech said. “And there is no reason for Pires not to make his comeback. “When you are in charge of a national team you can’t rule out someone for irrelevant excuses. I’m not a resentful character. ”
Domenech said he has not blacklisted any players, including striker Nicolas Anelka who has not played for France since he snubbed a late call-up from former coach Jacques Santini in November 2002… I’m not a resentful character. ”
Domenech said he has not blacklisted any players, including striker Nicolas Anelka who has not played for France since he snubbed a late call-up from former coach Jacques Santini in November 2002. “I’m looking for the best players I can have on my side. It is obvious that those who belong to top clubs, those who take part in the Champions League, have an advantage when it comes to me setting up a list for an international,” he said.

Holmes where the heart is in seeking to define great from the good
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Dec 27, 2004
In that tournament, Beckham realised that he will never be quite the player he always wanted to be. Conclusion: greatness involves the infallible ability to seize the moment. So what positive examples of greatness did we take from Euro 2004? The answer is depressing: none whatsoever. This was not a freak occurrence, it was a continuation of a pattern. There was precious little greatness to be found at the World Cup of 2002. I am not being parochial and English. Neither competition produced a star, neither produced a constellation either, in the form of an electrifying must-watch team.

Quotes of the year
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Dec 28, 2004
“- David Dein, the Arsenal vice-chairman, on the long-running saga of whether Patrick Vieira would go to Real Madrid. “It’s important for the lads not to see a member of the squad walking around with a face like a smacked bum. “- Joe Cole on keeping his chin up despite not playing a minute for England at Euro 2004. “I am sure some people think that I have not got the brains to be that clever. “- David Beckham on his deliberate booking for fouling Ben Thatcher, of Wales, in a World Cup qualifying match. “Anybody who is thinking of applying for the Scotland job in the next eight or nine years should go and get themselves checked out by about 15 psychiatrists. “- Martin O’Neill, the Celtic manager.

Gyan?s goal is no simpler than one scored by Swedish player Ibragimovich, who placed the ball into the net with his heel. Baffur Gyan I feel honored to score in the way that I have received applause from the opposition supporters. It was not an easy task to reach the best goal scorer on his telephone. No, the telephone network in Ghana, where the forward is spending his holidays, is ok. But how can you reach him at home? Because the holidays are short, but the number of relatives that he has to visit is big. It was great that the relatives happened to understand the importance of my call and provided me with three telephone numbers. – I think I know which goal you have in mind, – said Gyan after finding out that he is among the candidates for the best goal… It was great that the relatives happened to understand the importance of my call and provided me with three telephone numbers. – I think I know which goal you have in mind, – said Gyan after finding out that he is among the candidates for the best goal. – -This goal has great significance for me, not only because it was so good, but because of the goal our team managed to achieve significant point, which played its part at the end of the season. – The congratulations from the team mates after the match were mainly because of this? – No, they didn?t forget to mention that the goal was very good. But it is a lot easier to describe how I managed to do it rather than actually do it. – It were the dying minutes of the second half in the match against FC ?Rubin?, and there was no time for long attack.

Greece?s remarkable upset in becoming European champions after starting the tournament as 80-1 outsiders did not meet with universal approval from purists unhappy with their defensive approach. It was hard to disagree with coach Otto Rehhagel?s counter-attacking tactics, however, as Greece clinched the title by beating hosts Portugal in both the opening match (2-1) and final (1-0). They also got the better of reigning champions France (1-0) in the quarter-finals and the favourites from the Czech Republic (1-0) in the semi-finals. Portugal hosted an outstanding festival of soccer and fully expected to crown it with victory over Greece in the final after seeing off England and the Netherlands in the knockout stages… Greece?s remarkable upset in becoming European champions after starting the tournament as 80-1 outsiders did not meet with universal approval from purists unhappy with their defensive approach. Funny old year

Sir Alex got covered in pizza but left Arsenal with egg on their faces in the Battle of the Buffet. The whining and dining took its toll on Arsene Wenger, much to the delight of Old Big ‘Ead the second at the Bridge – Billy Bragg to his mates. Rooney was the name on everyone’s lips after spitting out the Toffees – not to mention his dummy. The boy wonder had one foot in a Euro semi, the other in plaster. now stood for Faria Alam – as well as an acronym to describe precisely what the organisation achieved this year.

The tabloids seem determined to turn Wayne and Coleen into the new…
Calcutta Telegraph – Dec 28, 2004
Sometimes the coverage can be very unfair. ?

For Rooney, the business of dealing with the media is now a by-product of the commercial deals negotiated by Stretford that will add further riches to the ?22 million, six-year contract he has signed at Old Trafford. Although his life is now unrecognisable from his early days on Merseyside, Rooney is determined not to let his celebrity go to his head. That was the advice Steven Gerrard gave him when the pair became friends during Euro 2004, and the same message has come from other colleagues in the England and Manchester United dressing rooms. ?All the players try and help you and give you bits of advice when they can and the advice they?ve given me I?ve taken on board,? he says. ?They told me to keep my feet on the ground and just don?t be doing stupid things. ?There?s always a chance there?s going to be a photographer around, plus there are lots of young people who look up to footballers, so I think you?ve always got to watch what you?re doing for their sake as well as yours because if they see you doing something bad then they are going to think it is okay for them to do it as well.

Disco and Sol in top ten for 2004
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Dec 27, 2004
Top ten football moments of 2004, good or bad, in no particular order, just as they come to me: 1. Zinedine Zidane’s on my list for Santa every year and is the best player I’ve ever seen, apart from Diego Maradona. When England played France in Euro 2004 they were 1-0 up through Fat Frankie Lampard when a pasty chav Evertonian slaughtered the France defence and won a pen without having to cheat. David Beckham took it and I hoped he’d drive it in as he had against Argentina in 2002. Instead the daft nurk allowed Fabien Barthez to save it. Then Emile Heskey was defending on the edge of our area and Zizou slammed the resulting free kick past David James. All discombobulated, the keeper then fouled Thierry Henry and Zizou stepped up to take the pen… Not the football especially (although I loved Iraq’s progress), but just being there. Anyone who doesn’t want the Games in London clearly didn’t go to Athens and is mad. Seeing Rio Ferdinand bodycheck Freddie Ljungberg, narrowly failing to trigger a crippling migraine, when the Swede was clean through at the Theatre Of Shame in October. As the ref waved play on I remember feeling as though he may be a bit of a homer and that we might lose because of him.

The game was lost 4-0, while the return match the following year in Wrexham ended in a 2-0 defeat. Wrexham were the competition’s first winners and soon the tournament became a force in itself, but it was not until 1912 that a side from south Wales, Cardiff City FC, won the cup for the very first time. Divided loyaltiesFootball finally began to take hold in south Wales in the 1890s, and in 1902 the Welsh Football League was formed. But at the same time, many Welsh teams began to join the English leagues in search of a higher standard of football. British Championship successDespite this, when football resumed following the end of the first world war, the then FAW secretary, Ted Robbins, began to single-handedly revolutionise the way the sport was run in the country. The difficulties were immense, as most top Welsh players were with English clubs and their release and availability for international games was never certain… However, a second qualification for a major finals tournament was to remain an elusive quest. Tremendous optimismSome great Welsh players have performed with distinction on the world stage, including John Charles, who became an idol in Italy, Ian Rush, a feared goalscorer for Liverpool FC, and Ryan Giggs, who won the UEFA Champions League with Manchester United FC in 1999. Wales came agonisingly close to qualifying for UEFA EURO 2004™, only losing to Russia in the play-offs, and there is tremendous optimism that Welsh football is on the rise again in Europe.
