Football Notes Zidane may not stay at Real until 2007
Namibian – Jan 12, 2005
"I’m not playing my last season but I may not be able to make it until 2007," Zidane was quoted as saying by French weekly Journal du Dimanche. The playmaker, who turns 33 in June, joined the Spanish giants from Juventus for a world record fee of $66 million dollars in 2001 and extended his contract last season. "I can only play well when I feel well and happy," he added. "I don’t want to carry on just for the sake of it. I will know in the very near future what I’m going to do… "I don’t want to carry on just for the sake of it. I will know in the very near future what I’m going to do. "Zidane said he had no regrets about ending his international career after champions France were eliminated by eventual tournament winners Greece in the Euro 2004 quarter-finals. However, he is ready to wear Les Bleus colours again if a match is organised for the tsunami victims in South East Asia. "I’ll make myself available for such a game. I’m waiting for someone to set things up," he said. Ajax come face-to-face with Ajax TWO clubs who bear the same name, colours and owners meet head-to-head on the pitch this week in an unusual soccer match.

Fergie plays mind games again
rte.ie – Jan 12, 2005
“I think there is more to come from the team,” said the Chelsea assistant manager. “We are a relatively new side put together this season, so we can only improve with playing together. ”
The matter of whether Chelsea can win the quadruple or not this season could be decided tonight as the two sides clash in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final. Chelsea are without the suspended Arjen Robben. The home side will also be missing defenders Robert Huth (ankle) and Ricardo Carvalho (broken toe) along with Scott Parker (broken foot). Striker Mateja Kezman is a doubt after he collected a minor ankle knock in the FA Cup win over Scunthorpe on Saturday. Frank Lampard is available again after suspension and boss Jose Mourinho is likely to recall Claude Makelele, Petr Cech and Damien Duff after resting them for the third-round cup tie… Gary Neville will not be considered but has returned to training after his recent virus. Meanwhile, United are reported to be running the rule over Benfica goalkeeper Jose Moreira for next season with Tim Howard and Roy Carroll unlikely to stay at Old Trafford. Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, in a surprise move last May, selected the uncapped 22-year-old as his third-choice keeper for Euro 2004. The player renewed with Benfica in April 2004 and is under contract until 2010.

?Those responsible for the violence will be found and punished. The law will be put into effect in the strictest form,? said Alternate Culture Minister Fani Palli-Petralia whose ministry oversees sports in the country. She said Greece will not allow this incident to mar the ?golden summer? of last year when the national team won the Euro 2004 title and the country hosted successful Olympics and Paralympics. Violence on and off the pitch has plagued Greek football for years and a number of measures taken by previous governments have failed to put a halt to the phenomena. The Professional Football Players Association of Greece in a statement Monday said that those who love the sport do not want such a championship filled with violence.

Italy launch Euro 2012 bid
TVNZ – Jan 13, 2005
“With thisbid, our prestige will be judged not only by Italy but by the wholeof Europe. We will be more credible if there are moves to fight andbeat the racism and violence that we have seen around soccermatches,” Italian Football Association (Federcalcio) chairmanFranco Carraro said. Italy, which hosted the World Cup in 1990, won the European Championshipfor the only time in 1968. Thetournament has grown into a 16-team event, second only in size tothe World Cup and worth millions of euros to the host country insponsorship, ticket sales and the boost to tourism. “We allknow the importance of football in this country and Italy’s greatsoccer history,” Undersecretary Gianni Letta told a newsconference… “We aim towin this race that would mean so much for our sport and for thecities that would host the championships. “Becausewe are a tourist country, we already have the roads, the trains, the airports necessary to handle this event. Biddingagainst Italy is Greece, surprise winners of Euro 2004 in Portugal. Poland and Ukraine are also considering a joint bid. UEFA,European soccer’s governing body, will decide on the host countryin December 2006. Italiansoccer has recently been tarnished by racist chants and brawls inthe stands. InSeptember, Serie A club AS Roma’s Champions League match againstDynamo Kiev was abandoned after referee Anders Frisk was struck onthe head by an object thrown from the crowd in Rome’s OlympicStadium.

Eriksson made to wait over break
BBC News – Jan 11, 2005
And with the rest of European domestic football now scheduled to finish on 14 May next year, that would leave him at a disadvanatge with his rivals. On Monday, Eriksson repeated his appeal to the FA to give his squad enough preparation time before the tournament, which begins in Germany on 9 June. “It was one of the reasons why we only had a quarter-final in Portugal in Euro 2004 and Japan in the 2002 World Cup,” he told the FA’s website. “Three weeks was too little. That’s why I’m fighting for more. ”

Despite the potential problem of the FA Cup final, Eriksson remains optimistic that England will complete qualification for the 2006 World Cup in Germany and perform well. “In this job, you have to win games… If you win matches, you are popular and you stay in the job. If you don’t, then you are out. “But that is not just as England coach, it is the law wherever you are.

Offside, 13 January
Spiked – Jan 13, 2005
‘I look positively at new aids if they help us along – if, for example, we could send a signal to a referee’s wristwatch’, said Volker Roth, chair of the UEFA referees’ committee. ‘But I don’t like instant video replays. Football is a fast-flowing game, which should not be chopped up or constantly interrupted. ‘ Now, the UEFA referees’ committee is not the sort of institution with which any freedom-loving individual ought to have affinity. But I find myself seduced by Herr Roth’s faultless logic. I think it’s only a matter of time before instant goal-line technology is introduced. Indeed Adidas has developed a whizzy new system in which a ball fitted with a microchip can send an instant signal to the fourth official if it crosses the goal line… Even TV pundits, aided by video replays from several camera angles, cannot always agree. Moreover, interpretations of the laws tend to differ from one country to another. For example, continental referees are more likely to penalise any physical contact with a goalkeeper than their British counterparts, as illustrated by Urs Meier’s infamous decision to rule out Sol Campbell’s ‘goal’ against Portugal at Euro 2004. Maybe, instead of searching for the Holy Grail of hi-tech, error-free officiating, we should concentrate our efforts on removing some of the moronic rules and regulations that have helped to erode the authority of referees in recent years. A couple of weeks ago Manchester City striker Robbie Fowler was booked for celebrating a goal against Everton by running down the touchline smacking his head – a cute response to taunts about his alleged drug problems. Earlier this season Everton’s Tim Cahill was shown a second yellow for removing his shirt to celebrate a goal. However much we invest in technology it will never totally eradicate human error, but a few simple rule changes could rid us of countless barmy refereeing decisions immediately.

Beckham plea: Snub Kop, Morientes
go.com – Jan 11, 2005
‘I think Morientes is a star player and he is very important for the fans,’said Beckham. ‘He was at Monaco last year and now he is back here. I think he should stayhere, but that’s not up to me or the players. He’s a good person and anexcellent player. ‘Beckham’s own future in Spain has been the subject of much conjecture sinceformer Brazil manager Luxemburgo was appointed to replace Mariano Garcia Remon. He nevertheless sees himself staying with Madrid on a long-term basis, and iseager to prove his value to the club extends far beyond the marketing millionsthat Real earn from his presence in the squad. ‘The coach is a very impressive person and a good coach, but it is importantfor us to all work hard,’ said Beckham… ‘He has been exceptional for Liverpool and it is a credit both to him and theclub that he decided to stay at the end of last season. ‘I don’t know if he will come to Real Madrid, but if he did people would seejust how great a player he is, he adds so much to any team. ‘Of the criticism of his recent international performances, particularly thoseat Euro 2004 where his usual high standards slipped, Beckham admitted thatright-wing rival Shaun Wright-Phillips had been doing well to press his claimsfor inclusion. ‘I think it is great that Shaun Wright-Phillips is playing as he is doing. Heis playing great football for Manchester City,’ said Beckham. ‘As England captain I am pleased players emerge and prove how good they are,he is also a great person like his dad (Ian Wright). ‘But Beckham remains the man in favour with Sven-Goran Eriksson, and heexplained: ‘I don’t pick the team, the coach does, and he has to decide.

Stolcers hopes for Latvia recall
BBC News – Jan 12, 2005
Stolcers has not played for his country since Euro 2004, but has scored seven goals in 26 appearances this season for the Glovers, mostly from the left wing. “The Latvia manager is going to keep an eye on me and see if I’m ready to play for them,” he told BBC Radio Bristol. “It depends on how well I continue to play, but I would be very happy to play for Latvia again.

Classy Rafael runs local Ajax ragged
Independent Online – Jan 13, 2005
And 21-year-old Rafael van der Vaart did not disappoint as he inspired Ajax Amsterdam to victory over satellite club Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday. But, as the clich? always goes, football is about goals
Van der Vaart made his debut for the internationally famous Dutch club at the age of 17. He has often been spoken of as potentially being in the same class as Dutch legend Johan Cruyff… He was the link man at the heart of everything. Van der Vaart’s touch on the ball, poise, passing and vision was glorious – and everybody at the ground on Wednesday night was privileged to witness his genius. Ajax Amsterdam made their intentions clear from the opening few seconds when Greek hero Angelos Charisteas, scorer of the winning goal at Euro 2004 final, flashed a shot wide, and Van der Vaart fired an effort straight at Ajax CT goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs. At that stage the warning signs for the local lads were sounding loudly. Either they compete or the Dutch would embarrass them – because Ajax Amsterdam had come to play. But credit to Gordon Igesund’s Ajax CT men. They weathered that initial storm and then came back strongly and dominated the middle part of the first half.

ESPNsoccernet – England – Pompey chase Basinas
go.com – Jan 11, 2005
Basinas has been widely reported in Athens to be on the move in the summer toOlympiacos, but Alexandratos admits his combative style of play would beeffective in the physical English game. ‘He plays the role of a Patrick Vieira or Roy Keane for us,’ he said. ‘Of course he is not as good as them but he is a very good player and works very hard for the team and he is also very good at set-pieces. But he is under contract with us until 2006. ‘Your views on this story?.

Seconds out in dour battle to be first among equals
Irish Independent – Jan 13, 2005
Manchester United took real pride at stifling Chelsea with a combination of organisation and determination. All draws are equal, but some are more equal than others. United, who have not lost a Cup tie to Chelsea since 1950, rested Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand before Saturday’s Premiership trip to Liverpool and Alex Ferguson’s gamble paid off. They will fancy their chances in the second leg, although Chelsea will have Arjen Robben back from suspension. Chelsea lacked their usual penetration last night. United’s goalkeeper, Tim Howard, was rarely troubled by Mourinho’s side, whose attacking set-pieces were disappointing by the usual high standard of Frank Lampard, John Terry and company. Lampard went close with a shot, but most of Chelsea’s exciting moments were conjured up by Joe Cole, who departed to a warm ovation and was deservedly man of the match… Ronaldo, far less convincingly than Saha, also claimed a spot-kick following a challenge from Terry. Again Barry waved play on. Rooney, back from suspension, was far from the devastating mover of Euro 2004, but he still created problems for the best defence in English football. Seizing on a hurried Terry clearance, Rooney shot wide, then fired into the top tier of the Matthew Harding Stand before ending the half with a flash of magic. When Darren Fletcher crossed from the right, Rooney’s reactions were pin-sharp, the striker twisting his neck to meet the ball with a powerful header. It appeared to be arrowing inexorably for the back of Carlo Cudicini’s net, much to the delight of the vocal United contingent behind the goal. Somehow, the athletic Cudicini managed to throw himself across and claw the ball away.

UEFA CUP: Cassano adds to Roma armoury
noticias.info – Jan 12, 2005
The Giallorossi are second in the section with four points. Nothing personal”Cassano is on the right path,” coach Luciano Spalletti said after he impressed in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against ACF Fiorentina. “If he continues like that, he will not have any problem with me. He’s a great player and can certainly be useful to our team. Difficult decisionHowever, Spalletti has no regrets about leaving Cassano out until last week. “I don’t think we wasted his time,” he said. “I consider a player’s behaviour off the pitch a crucial factor and I took what I thought was the most appropriate decision without being influenced by the club… “There are still seven months until the [FIFA] World Cup,” he said. “If Cassano plays well during that time, I will certainly take him into consideration for the finals. Big ambitionCassano has played just twice for the Azzurri since scoring against Sweden and Bulgaria at UEFA EURO 2004?. Born the day after his country’s 1982 World Cup triumph, the forward could yet help bring the trophy back to Italy, though winning the UEFA Cup with Roma would be a nice start. datos de la noticia
