BBC SPORT | Football | African | Egypt stick with Shehata
BBC News – Jan 14, 2005
Shehata was named caretaker coach after Italian Marco Tardelli was sacked last October following a string of poor results for the Pharaohs. The decision to stick with Shehata was made after the EFA failed to sign a foreign coach. Among others, the association approached former Portugal and Morocco coach Humberto Coelho, Mali-born Jean Tigana and the Pole Henri Kasperzack. “Tigana said he couldn’t give us a firm commitment because of his continuing
legal battle with his former English Premiership club Fulham,” EFA official
Viken Djizmedjian told BBC Sport… Egypt are currently fourth in Group Three of the 2006 World Cup qualifiers with seven points, five adrift of leaders Ivory Coast. Their next World Cup qualifier is at home to second-placed Libya in
March.

Returning a favour not a problem when World Cup at stake
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 14, 2005
Over the years we have kept in contact on a somewhat irregular basis, but with Trinidad and Tobago having a half decent chance to qualify for the first time for the World Cup in Germany in 2006 there was no way I could refuse his request to help. How I have enjoyed these last few days. The majority of the players for this tournament are home based, though most of them will probably not make the squad for the remaining World Cup qualifying games. But their attitude has been first class and if a couple of them make it into Bertille’s squad then all of this work will have been worthwhile. For the game against St Vincent they have based their training camp in Antigua using the Antigua Recreation Ground… Sensible and correct but unfortunately the game was lost 2-1. A lot of people were not happy about that. They say that football has the same language the world over. Believe me it does when you lose!I see my job as to support and help as much as possible without undermining Bertille. Oh, by the way, when Dwight Yorke was transferred by Aston Villa to Manchester United for £12. 6 million, how much do you think the St Clair Coaching School received? Yes, you are right – nothing. What a chance Villa missed to have first call on many Caribbean players over the last decade.

world –>Updated: Jan. 14, 2005Sanchez: I’ll coach Mexico at World CupMEXICO CITY, Jan 14 (Reuters) – Outspoken UNAM coach HugoSanchez has predicted he will be given the job of leading Mexicoat the 2006 World Cup in Germany once they have qualified. ‘The directors are just waiting for the right moment, I knowit suits them and interests them,’ the former Real Madrid andMexico striker told Mexican media. ‘There are publicity contracts to think about, there is thecommercial side, there’s a lot of money involved and when you goto the World Cup, it’s not the same having Hugo Sanchez ashaving the other one,’ he said, referring to current Mexicocoach Ricardo La Volpe, his bitter personal rival. ‘But if they (the Mexican federation) wait too long, maybeI’ll have gone to Europe, so I’m telling them to make the mostof me with the national team. Let them qualify and then bring mein, I’m not demanding it, I’m suggesting it.

"European Leagues remain important and we’re always looking for new ones that have the right balance between affordability and interest to the audience," he says. What could put the Fox Soccer Channel on the map on a larger scale is a stake in the coverage of future World Cups, one of the few soccer events that has the potential to draw the casual sports viewer. "We definitely want to be a player in the World Cup once the current arrangements [ABC and ESPN are the broadcast home through 2006; Univision holds the Spanish-language TV rights] lapse after the ’06 World Cup," says Sternberg. "Whether we do that on our own or in partnership with others is an open question. " What isn’t in a question is that television viewers of soccer had a very good week. The 35-year-old has also been warned by Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann that heneeds to be playing regular football next season if he is to win selection forthe 2006 World Cup. However despite his problems, Lehmann revealed he would like to stay inEngland, where his family are settled. ‘With regard to the World Cup, I probably have to wait and see,’ he added. ‘For the time being, I will be fighting but if the situation doesn’t change by summer, I need to make up my mind again. ‘My family really likes England a lot and it’s a gift that the children cangrow up learning the English language.

Mickel can rely on good grounding as key to rise
Edinburgh Evening News – Jan 15, 2005
His relationship, plus the backing of his devoted parents, Bruce and Dorothy, are a central core to his bid to become a consistent top 30 competitor on the tough World Cup circuit. The 27-year-old was at least able to recharge his batteries at home over the festive period before embarking on a three-month odyssey across Europe. He played five-a-side football with old friends, caught up with some pals who work as DJs in some of the Capital’s top night spots, and even played table football in his New Town flat. The therapy, he believes, will stand him in good stead and act as a platform to continue his recent purple patch. Two top 25 early-season finishes at the end of the year mean he can now afford to employ a full-time physio on the tour thanks to extra funding from the United Kingdom National Lottery. Now, little niggles will be sorted out quickly by a professional rather than skiing through the pain barrier or having to call in local assistance at ski resorts, an option he avoids at all costs from bitter experience. His back-up team is now complete and Mickel’s confidence grows daily as morale-boosting results continue to come… “Technically my skiing was good but I seemed to be trying too hard. We reasoned that by cutting out little mistakes and concentrating fully on the task in hand that things would improve – and they have. ” His improved form culminated in his first SuperG World Cup points just before Christmas followed 24 hours later by an 18th place in downhill. Since then, of course, Mickel has come on in leaps and bounds. A superb 13th place on the bumpy Bormio downhill was followed by 17th place on the bumpy Verte Kandahar piste at the French resort of Chamonix. “My aim is to go on from here and I believe I can do that,” he said. “I’m healthy, I’m in good shape mentally and physically, and I really feel part of the circuit now.

World number one Vijay Singh was on six under with Ernie Els four behind. Maruyama relinquished his overnight lead with a double-bogey at the first hole but hit back with a six-iron ace at the par-three fourth at the Waialae Country Club. “It was a really bad start,” Maruyama said. “I tried to think positive things. Fortunately, I had a hole-in-one.

Adriano has not been playing his best football in his club since the beginig of this year, Belletti is great when going forward but he cannot defend,Maicon would do a better choice. Hao’s move to Sheff Utd delayed
BBC News – Jan 15, 2005
Warnock earlier told the Yorkshire Post: “He has a good brain and excellent touch. “It won’t stop me looking for another striker but it will improve our squad and you can never have enough players. “He will learn about English football, take his coaching qualifications and at the end of the period be part of the Academy project in China. ”

A former bad boy of Chinese soccer, Hao has said his decision to leave Dalian Shide was partly due to China’s shock exit from the Asian 2006 World Cup qualifiers last November. The striker was banned for a year after spitting at a referee in 1998. ABC Sport – Summer of Tennis- Federer can be beaten: Hewitt
abc.net.au – Jan 15, 2005
Hewitt, 23, has won the US Open and Wimbledon titles but has never made it beyond the fourth round at Melbourne in eight attempts. As Australia’s highest-ranked player in the tournament, which starts on Monday, the pressure is on Hewitt, but he said the weight of expectation was not a burden. “I think I’ve played in enough big matches – Davis Cup semis and finals – in Australia to be able to handle the situation,” he said. “I try to thrive on it more and use it more as a positive than a negative. ”

Hewitt has been in great form leading into the first grand slam of the year. He reached the quarter-finals of the Australian hardcourt championships in Adelaide last week before beating Czech qualifier Ivo Minar 7-5, 6-0 in today’s final of the Sydney International. “I feel physically strong at the moment.

“He would unquestionably be a candidate for England. If that isn’t enough to convince Eriksson, surely he must be seriously considering his options now that Beckham – of all people – has stepped forward to offer this gushing eulogy on Wright-Phillips. “I think it is great that Shaun Wright-Phillips is playing the football he is doing,” said Beckham. “He is one of the best young talents in England and in Europe, and he deserves the chance he’s going to get with the England team. “I don’t pick the team, it’s the manager who picks the team and if he puts me in the middle, or if I stay on the right, or Shaun plays elsewhere, then that’s fine. Shaun is playing great football for City. While it seems only injury will prevent Beckham lining up at Villa Park – he has played whenever he has been fit for selection during the four years Eriksson has been in charge – there is little doubt that Wright-Phillips is pushing him all the way… Shaun is playing great football for City. And with the clock ticking towards the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, doesn’t a mid-season friendly offer a perfect chance to experiment? If he does decide to take a chance, Eriksson is sure to receive a pleasant surprise. Is SWP the right man for England? Have your say.

The LTA performance director is urging the next generation to force their way into the squad to face Israel. World number 191 Alex Bogdanovic and US Open junior champion Andrew Murray are the obvious candidates to join Greg Rusedski as the other singles player. “This is their chance and we will see who is going to step up,” said Felgate. “Everybody talks about Andrew, who is a tremendous prospect, but there are a large number of players who can force their way in with a few weeks of good performances. ”

Local referees and their assistants will take the field, starting this Sunday with the National Premier League, with a more distinct and professional look about them after two local companies, Wisynco and Palm Rose, combined to sponsor the officials with gear worth $1. 5 million over the next two years. Each of the 5,000 referees presently enlisted with the Jamaica Football Referees’ Association (JFRA) at all levels of the game will receive four shirts – white, red, black and light blue – in what is seen as the dawn of a new era for Jamaica’s referees. “This is a historic day in Jamaica and indeed the Caribbean,” said JFRA boss Peter Prendegast, the mastermind behind this new venture, at the press conference at the JFRA office yesterday. “The equipment will not only enhance our appearance; this venture will demand that our referees show better attitudes on and off the field and we… Most of the officials present had high praises for the sponsors and agreed that the shirts will not only help to improve the look of the referees, but will also demand better performances from them. “In our 54 years of existence we have never received a sponsorship like this,” said veteran referee Clive Wright, “We will wear them and wear them with pride wherever we go,” he said. Prendergast, who has been selected among 46 referees from the region to participate in a FIFA workshop in Mexico ahead of the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany, said he was not prepared for the summons, but will now have to get himself in the right frame of mind to meet the challenge.
