Eriksson sings the praises of Wright-Phillips
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 19, 2005
The temptation to play Wright-Phillips, who has scored nine Premiership goals for Manchester City this season, has proved irresistible to Eriksson in his campaign to qualify for the World Cup in 2006. Eriksson’s plan could see Beckham and Wright-Phillips replicating their club roles for England, a tactic the England manager is known to favour. He said yesterday: “It’s possible to play them both because David’s played centre midfield for 1½ years with Real Madrid and you could do that for the national team as well. It depends on what way we chose to play. ” Speaking at Wright-Phillips’s home ground, the City of Manchester Stadium, at the draw for the women’s European Championship, Eriksson also hinted that he could even consider switching Wright-Phillips from the right to left wing… He said: “He’s very consistent and very tough. He gets tackled, but he always comes up again. These are important things in international football and to be consistent in the Premier League is very good. ” Eriksson also gave a vote of confidence to Michael Owen who, despite scoring for Real Madrid at the weekend, has had a sporadic start to life in Spanish football. “I will pick him, it’s not difficult to pick him,” Eriksson said. “I think he’s playing well. He’s not playing that often, but every time he comes on, he scores.

An increasingly exasperated Football Association is considering its response to the current round of public squabbling between Sir Alex Ferguson and Ars?ne Wenger. The FA is desperate to prevent a repeat of the bad-tempered displays from both sets of players, which seem to be becoming usual in their fixtures. After Mike Riley’s widely derided performance in the last match – which ended Arsenal’s unbeaten run on 49 games – it is felt that Poll’s authority will help achieve a more measured tone. He is the only English referee to be short listed for the 2006 World Cup. None the less the FA fears that further outbursts between the managers will add fuel to what is already a heated fixture and hopes the two men recognise that this could have implications for their players’ safety… The FA is desperate to prevent a repeat of the bad-tempered displays from both sets of players, which seem to be becoming usual in their fixtures. We accept it and move on. “Middlesbrough and Everton were yesterday charged by the Football Association with failing to control their players in the wake of the goalmouth melee towards the end of Sunday’s game. If found guilty they could both face a fine… Hull manager Peter Taylor says that the FA want to offer him the England Under-21 job on a permanent basis.
